I have gotten into quilting because of my Mom - she's 90 - Anyway she has a room that is lined with shelves that are FULL of fabric. Have no idea how much in yardage. I swore I would not buy any fabric until we had made a sizable dent in all that she has.....that only lasted a year. I've gotten into a couple projects that....believe it or not, there was no appropriate fabric in Mom's stash. Now I've got to figure out how to organize what I have started to collect.

Guilty as charged, I just can't resist a sale. I have at least that much. My only saving grace is my hubby does woodwork and that is not cheap so I get away with it. I also sell my quilt squares, mini quilt top and do special orders up on ebay and been doing that for 11 years. So I more than pay for any fabric I purchase.
Have a Blessed day Ellen |
Wow weee!!! If you paid for that at the price we pay here in Australia ($20 and up per metre) that would amount to $60 000. I think my husband would kill me
 I have one small basket and look longingly at all the beautiful fabric on the US websites, it's just not the same as touching though  |
Now that I am retired, I have more, but no where near that! I would imagine I have about 150 yards or so. Trouble is, the more I read and experience the new prices on cotton--the more tempted I am to buy--just in case. I have stopped buying until I can make up quilts from what I have--but we all know I will be heading back to the store at some point to find a piece of the "right color" that isn't in the stash!

Here is just a thought if you have soo much and are planning to give it after you die to sil dd etc why dont you pick out what you know you will do and have a girls day invite them over and let them pick what they want out before selling. That way you can enjoy what they finish of your kits. qnd they can enjoy them while your still around. why wait. Deb

I used to have a lot of fabric but I got married and the DH and I went through the Non-quilting fabric (clothes) and sold most of it on ebay. It allowed us to take a short trip to Florida. Anyway, I have just enough. I know what I have but I would love to have some quilt kits.
i too have used a lot of stash for my local Boys and Girls club torch club. They are making quilts for Project Linus and my stash has come in pretty handy. They buy fabric but I have alot of solids, etc. to match up with them.
shoot - you win. I thought I had quite a bit....wow.
I just started quilting 1.5 years ago and have been debating if I should start a stash. Part of me wanted to buy fabric as I needed it but recently I have been buying just to buy. I go through these phases where I "must buy fabric" and that's where I am at now. :)
I don't think I can count that high, I spend about $100.00 a month at the local stores. I love fabric, I work so therefore I spend.
I maybe have around 50 yards on hand. Most of that is for backings. I have two quilt kits sitting here. Not including the kits, I'd say I could probably squeeze at least four quilts out of my scraps and other fabrics. To me that is plenty. I would never want to have as much on hand as you do because fabric does get a dated look to it sometimes and I like working with fresh colors and patterns.
i have quite a bit of fabric .but not that much wow.
Can I be a sister? I have lots of fabric, but nothing like you mentioned. Guess my saving grace is that we never get a income tax refund. My slogan is that"Will Work for Fabric". and I do.
So you have reached the state of SABLE - Stash Aquisition Beyond Life Expectancy. Congratulations!!
I wouldn't even hazard a guess on how much I have. It's everywhere. It's everywhere!!!!
Sounds like you may be the "Queen" of fabric stuff!!! Can I be your new best friend :-D
In answer to the last question on your post........Fabric does'nt talk back. It waits--softly calling your name. And it fits in all kinds of quilts. How can any of that be wrong??????
All I can say is...WOW!!
I guess I'm the exception to the rule. Or maybe I'm not A real quilter yet. The most I have ever had was fabric for two quilts and fabric for 5 aprons and everything needed for 7 sock monkeys. Maybe a little for machine embroidery??????
On my income, could not possibly afford to have 80 kits sitting in a drawer.LOL - Kits are generally $150 for single beds for starters - so you do the math. However, I do have a lot of 20cm cuts as I buy them as I can afford them and when I have 'enough' i make a quilt.Still manage to have a big stash as well.
My family insists I have enough fabric. I think there's always room for more. I just love it.
Well you have me beat on fabric. But I have plenty. Enjoy it all.
Well, let me put it this way... I have enough fabric in my stash to give the LQS some real competition, should I ever want to open my own store... LOL
When my daughter is looking for fabric, I tell her to shop a new place in town called "Mom's Closet" - great fabric, and the price is right... |
I made my husband and 2 daughters read your post. This is to
prove to them that I am not the only one that has so much stuff. I don't have quite as much as you BUT almost, especially in kits. I also have hundreds of books which I can't resist. thousands of notions of every kind and duplicates of most.I love my fabric and have to have it. I wear clothes til they shred and shoes with holes in them.I would rather not miss that new fabric line that just came out!!!!! lol It does my heart good to KNOW that I am not alone in this endeaver. |
20 totes, two cabinets--and I am de-stashing.....so so totes are no longer so full the lids do not fit!
I quit my habit last night. We got out taxes from the accountant. No more fabric for me. The IRS is getting all my fabric money. Luckily I have a stash that will keep me quilting for years.
I have a good huge stash to work with and only spend if I need a certain fabric for my quilts. I couldn't go out and spend like that as there are other things that I would rather do with my income tax money. There was post on the board yesterday about who will inherit your stash if anything happened to you and that made me realize I don't need to hoard fabric as I have no one to pass it on to. None of my kids want to quilt. I am also tired of the clutter of totes stuffed were ever they fit.
I have a good amount of fat quarters but I need actual yardage now for borders and backing.
I thought I had a lot but I think you are the champ!!!. I would estimate that I have over 100 yards - nearing 200 including a few bolts and all the kits I have. Sometimes I get a collection of fat quarters all put together prettily and I can't undo it and use it - looks too cute.
ive only been quilting for 2.5 years so my stash isent to big yet only about 130yards or so but its growing just put in an order at conecting threads but im saving my incom tax for a long arm so i have to cut back on fabric.
I thought I had a lot before reading this. My stash is puny in comparison, and I almost never buy kits.
Too much, but working on donating a lot of it.
Umm lots of fabric stash here!
The only kits I have not made up are my Jenny Beyer. Now, the marked books I have set aside to make are very numerous! I would love to see what you have for sale kit wise. |
I probably have 3,000 yards, too. I will be selling more batik after I get it folded and yardage counted. I hope to end up with just 2,000 yards of stash when I'm finished! As long as I have room, I seem to acquire more!!
GUILTY. Lord knows how much fabric I have and I keep buying more. Just started quilting, so I look forward to using up alot of it. If I could just stop buying it, I might catch up. But I doubt it.
Do you have any baby quilt kits you would like to sell? I don't have as much as you but my SIL sure does. So you are not alone.

A fellow addict! I easily have that. And I still look at fabric ads and drool over the pictures from my online sources. I just cut into one of my favorites yesterday, just a little piece, to make a quilted postcard for my SIL and it was painful. That's just dumb on my part. She is going to love the little "quilt" and that is what I buy fabric for. Is there any hope?
I do buy a couple already made kits if they really catch my eye. But for the most part, I make up my own kits from fabrics that I like. My stash is teeny weeny compared to some, but I do go to my stash for some things. I love fabric!!
I've had a darn good stash with 20+ yrs of quilting but nothing near that !
I have some kits that are still on the shelf, and I remind myself of that when I'm tempted to buy a new one. I've given much of my older stash to our guild & bee for Linus quilts, to our elem school, church youth, Girl Scouts etc ... Maybe doing that would help you to clear out fabrics & patterns you won't ever use. I know that it really helped me to "clean house" and to focus on fabrics & patterns I still like and will use. When there's too much stash, it just becomes overwhelming both physically and mentally ... Sounds like you could have some great sales here, no doubt you'd have some eager buyers ! :) |
