I've spent my whole income tax check on fabric. It took me 6 weeks, but there is an online store that knows me by name. I currently have 80 yes eighty (still the same no matter how many ways you spell it) 'kits' ready to do at any given moment. And that's just the one's that I've got bagged. It doesn't count the collections that I've bought that won't fit in bags (Chocolat, Poetry Collection, Belle, Fuschia, He Loves Me and many more). I see it, I buy it. It probably won't be there when I go back. We all have had that happen to us. I will probably post some for sale here because I will NEVER be able to use it all up. I have told my daughter after I die, she gets the Gammill and her choice of kits. Then I want her to give certain kits to my SIL's, Niece and Sister. The rest is hers. Maybe after I get my fabric room together I'll post a picture. My webshots pictures shows a day that I received 20 packages in the mail. Only one was for my hubby. I'm a fabric addict. Sometimes I just stroke the fabric, knowing how much joy it will bring in a quilt. I would say I have over 3000 yards. And that's being conservative. Yes, I think I'll be putting some on here for sale.

Is there anyone out there who has this addiction too? What about the fabric makes you want to keep buying?

Sadiemae 03-29-2011 08:17 AM

I would love to play in your fabric.

HOLY COW!!!!! I don't even have a fraction of that! I did buy 3 bolts w/5 yards on them when Wal-Mart was getting ready to stop selling fabric when I visited our Aunt....the rest is scraps or some fat quarters. Oh, you definately have a collection!

np3 03-29-2011 08:21 AM

I don't have that much!

SherriB 03-29-2011 08:22 AM

I have a small stash of fabric. I have 2 of the cabinets with doors that came from Walmart full of fabric. I love the look, smell and feel of fabric. I would love to have one more cabinet filled up. And I am slowly getting there. I am letting myself buy about $50 to $100 a month in fabric.

dglvr 03-29-2011 08:22 AM

You've got me beat. Holy cow. You better get off the computer and get busy.

sueisallaboutquilts 03-29-2011 08:35 AM

Did you say 80 kits! OMG I don't even know what to say lol

QuiltnNan 03-29-2011 08:56 AM

Have you ever thought about opening a quilt shop???? That's a lot of fabric.

cjomomma 03-29-2011 09:05 AM

I don't even want to try and figure out how much I have. I did spend a good chunk of our tax return on fabric.

TonnieLoree 03-29-2011 01:15 PM

Geesh! I'm speachless. If I am able to spend $10.00 a month I consider myself lucky. I do have a ton of fabric, but not to that extreme. Have fun.

whinnytoo 03-29-2011 01:39 PM

Guilty as charged

SuziC 03-29-2011 01:42 PM

I don't have THAT much but i have enough to keep me busy for a while

BabyCakes 03-29-2011 01:50 PM

Last summer I unloaded some fabric. It came to 3000 yds. It was a shock to me too.

Quiltforme 03-29-2011 01:53 PM

I love the feel the smell the look and how I feel when I quilt it!

Jim's Gem 03-29-2011 02:02 PM

I may have a couple thousand yards as well!
I don't know how much really. Just lots.
But am always looking for more!

Marcia D 03-29-2011 02:05 PM

I want to have that much fabric when I grow up too! ;-) I have the addiction, but I'm a newbie so I have a long way to go. I'm so fascinated with novelty prints so if you ever have any that you want to get rid of, I'd be happy to help you clear out your stash. Enjoy your fabric when you get it!!

oldswimmer 03-29-2011 02:06 PM

I dont have that much, but it is in my nature to collect, so I very well could get there at some point. At last count, I think I had 11 kits..but also have some that I bought (coordinating) thinking that I would find the "perfect" pattern to use them on.....sort of a "kit" in the making.
I am sure we will all be watching for your sale!

wolph33 03-29-2011 02:21 PM

I don't buy kits but I buy way too much fabric-I am a junkie.I have way more than I can count-shelves -many shelves full.and bins full too, lol.

ewecansew 03-29-2011 02:27 PM

I was just thinking that an addict usually uses what they get (think -alcohol, drugs). They don`t store it. LOL. I hope you have a good insurance policy.

patchsamkim 03-29-2011 02:29 PM

I really don't know how much I have...it could be that much..I have a closet full arranged by colors, a cabinet half full, a dresser upstairs full, another dresser 3/4 full, baskets full, and then tubs full of projects started, or fabrics pulled, strips, etc. I have collected fabric for a looooonnnnggg time though so it really doesn't seem like I spend a lot...I spend way less than I used to...just need to find time to start using some of it again.

quilter1943 03-29-2011 02:34 PM

fortunately we put our refund into savings. Think it may come in handy.

dakotamaid 03-29-2011 02:39 PM

Sell some here, there will be buyers!! LOL, I only have 3 kits but last summer when we were up in Minneapolis I toured all the Outlets up there and came home with LOTS of quilt store quality fabric. My hubby is always glad to stop at a discount center for fabric cause he knows it will cost him less!!!!

Jo M 03-29-2011 02:48 PM

Yikes! That's a lot of fabric! I truly love fabric, but don't have anything near that amount...(wish I did though. ;) ) I've never purchased a kit, but I think I just might have to now. Keep enjoying ALL of it. :)

bamamama 03-29-2011 02:55 PM

I only

bamamama 03-29-2011 02:58 PM

I only buy when I have a project to buy for. I usally have left over and that's the extent of the stash. I used to just buy fabric, but found that when I was ready to make a quilt I had to buy the correct fabric for it anyway and most of the stash just sat there collecting dust. What I do stach is backing fabrics I have alot of that....and batting too.

Painiacs 03-29-2011 03:09 PM

I'm just starting to build it up! That's a lot of beauty! I may have 2 bins worth! To me that's a lot!

Painiacs 03-29-2011 03:11 PM

Saw my first kit today! Would love to try one. Wanna send me one? Tee hee !

fabric_fancy 03-29-2011 03:17 PM

i don't buy kits i prefer to pick out my own fabric.

i too have a least a couple thousand yards but not more then 3 thousand

smiles 03-29-2011 03:19 PM

No-where near that much, DH is very supportive but I think would definitely say something when it got that much. Makes me crazy thinking of all the quilts you will be able to make.
Love your avitar.

RUSewing 03-29-2011 03:32 PM

I estimate 2,000 yards, no kits. (We went to several Walmarts and bought bolts and bolts of 100% cotton when they were selling out at $1/yd.)

wanderingcreek 03-29-2011 03:43 PM

I don't have anywhere near that amount but I actually have 2 stashes now. One that I packed up when we moved in with my son for a bit and the one that I bought since moving in here (mostly from this board!!!!!) because I was going crazy not being able to quilt when I lost my job. I couldn't find the boxes with my fabric but I found my machine so I just bought more. Today I probably bought close to 50 yards more fabric. My kids are going to think I am crazy when the packages all start coming in but wait til they see what I am going to make with it all. Thousands of Bolts had Stonehenge fabrics on sale and I bought lots. Please sell some of yours here.

Jim's Gem 03-29-2011 03:56 PM

I do not have a single kit in my collection. I don't like to work from them. I like to changes things up a bit.

sblancarte 03-29-2011 04:01 PM

Wow!!I'm going to tell my family about you-you make me look conservative. What I love about fabric is that before it is cut or sewn it has limitless possibilities that you can dream about; once it is cut you are limited. I have been sewing for 56 years and quilting for 4--one of the things I like about quilting is that I can use small scraps. I used to buy fabric 5 yds at a time so I could make anything I wanted but now I buy lots of fat quarters and 1 yd pieces.

mygirl66 03-29-2011 04:32 PM

WOW! I cant even think about spending my whole income tax chack on fabric! I have so much now,( not 3000 yards, lol) I just buy a little here & there & sometimes I feel guilty then!

clynns 03-29-2011 05:04 PM

When I say kits, I usually start with fabric that I can't pass up. After finding a focus fabric, I try to find matching pieces or as close to the color of a contrasting color. I usually have an idea in mind when I start putting together the kits. Although, I must admit, Chocolat and Poetry collections, I kept buying whenever I saw it on sale. I lost my job about 2 years ago so my fabric buying has been cut down to necessity. But I really don't need any. I find good buys, put colors together and make my own quilts. Right now I'm working on quilting a queen size top (graduation present), I have to make 3 baby blankets (1 due in May, June and July) and I've been asked to make 2 more baby blankets and a larger quilt when I have the time. I don't know how I had time to do it all when I was working. Right now, quilting is keeping me sane. Most of my kits have been put together by me. They are not pre-purchased kits. Most of the time, I like my selection of fabric better than what I can find out there. It will be awhile before I put anything on here. There is so much to read out there, that one of the things that I didn't read were the requirements to be able to sale anything on here. So it will be a while before I do. But that's ok, I need to clean up my quilt room to see what I can part with. Heaven knows it deserves a good home. LOL

I have many many yards of fabric also. My husband encourages me to buy what I like and need. I recently saw an add in our local paper for fabric for sale. The sale said 7.00 a yard. I called the lady and ask what she would take for all she had and she told me 2000. I told her I would like to look at it and did today. I bought several yards at 4.00 a yard. Nearly all of it was Moda and she had it stored in containers. It was clean and stored together with other fabrics of the same line. I feel like I really hit the jack pot. Now I need to get busy and get it sewed or find a place to store it. May be I should rent a spot in the same storage she had it stored in lol.

I'm so glad that I don't live in Utah. I don't know what I'd do if I was close enough to go to that sale. And yes, Moda is my favorite! Lucky you!

I have never really counted my yardage but I have been collecting fabric for more than forty years. Even when I was a teenager, I was spending my babysitting money on fabric. I do know that four yards of fabric weighs about one pound. I also know that my puple bin of fabric weighs almost 60 pounds which means that I must have more than 200 yards of fabric in there. I also know that I have a bin of every colour that is almost as heavy. There are ten coloured bins plus a bin of black and cream/white. That means I have over 2000 yards and I haven't even counted my novelties, batiks, thirties or solids. Yes I have a lot of fabric that I am enjoying and using every day to make many quilts. I don't feel guilty about my fabric collection and will give it all away when I can no longer use it or decide to quit stitching! (My daughter says when that happens, we'll be planning my funeral.)

waldshei 03-30-2011 02:46 AM

I confess to also have appx 25 large plastic bins of fabric plus some I haven't packed up yet. I am moving. Funny how quickly that fabric accumulates. Enjoy your stash.

jpmaroni 03-30-2011 03:08 AM

After seeing two different estates with tons of fabric, it scared me straight. I clean out my stash yearly for the auction at our guild, and I work with teenagers that go thru my stash reguarly. It does give me free license at that point to purchase for current projects. Plus our taste seems to change over time.
