I don't put my pieces on my right side...but I'm left handed so I don't know if that makes a difference. On my right side I put my drink, trash, and all my goodies that I need, like scissors, pens, tweezers, etc in an acrylic thingy DH brought home from work. It's divided and graduated. It has 4 holders on each row (2 rows). I think it used to hold beefjerky or something...lol. Who cares it works!

I also like the idea of space on the right to put the unsewn pieces on.

I would say at least a foot to the right, enough space for scissors, a package or pin cushion of pins, and stuff like that. Your 21-34" should be great. As long as you have the drawers underneath, that should be enough storage for you. I have a set of drawers that were designed to hold stuff like letterhead and carbon paper, so they're the size of a sheet of paper and a little more than 1" deep. I use them to hold buttons, zippers, transfer paper, bobbins.
So, I would use one of the cabinets, and overhang by an inch or so. You want more space to the left of the sewing machine, to hold the weight of the quilts you're making. |
I'd like a big U with 6' on left for cutting, 6' for table/machine, 6' on right for ironing and whatever/

I might leave a 6" space on the RIGHT side of the machine but most of the space will be needed on the LEFT side for FMQ. That's the side nearest the needle. The reason I would leave the 6" space on the right would be to have a small space for an extra spool of thread, and maybe a cup of coffee or tea. If you are talking about piecing, I would still want my pieces to be sewn on the left side of the machine so they are close to the needle and less likely to get mixed up.

Guess I wasn't very clear which is normal for me. It is the right side where you place your pieces to sew together. I have two cabinets for my sewing center and DH will put a top on them with a space 30" between the cabinets so it looks like a desk. With the sewing machine in the center of the opening, I can have from the edge of the right side of the sewing machine to the outside edge of the top 25" to 38" to stack and layout the pieces I am sewing together. I have put together quilt blocks that had 21 units and pieces and I do make king size quilts. The cabinets are considered 29" high so after the top is on it will be the correct height for me to sew on. I also have a third cabinet that will be 36" high for cutting. The top on it will be 60" by 40".

I have had both (a little room on the right side of my machine and I've also had a lot. For me I would go with the 34". I like having my threads close, I have a stand that I can move and the extra room was nice. When I had the extra room, I also had a table lamp (I had great lighting, but sometimes I needed more). I would use it a lot at night or for long hours of very fine sewing. With the extra room my extra light was never in the way. If you have the room, bigger is better. We can all make due with small, but bigger can make sewing easier. Good luck
