sueisallaboutquilts 08-21-2010 05:19 AM

SLOB!!! :D
But when I clean up I can't find anything. Pathetic!!!

mar32428 08-21-2010 05:34 AM

Forgot to say if I ever cleaned up my sewing room, I'd never find anything again.

Well put.

I agree. I must be a creating Einstein

My sewing room is a disaster at the present time, but since my machine is in for servicing, I have an entire week to get it cleaned up. As a matter of fact, I started today and found a half bolt of muslin that I'd been missing for about a month. That's bad - when you lose a bolt of fabric.

Yea another Einstein here. And I have found a bolt or two as well!

Jeri M 08-21-2010 05:53 AM

Not neat at all! As a matter of fact my sewing area is in the basement because I am such a slob when I sew. Well - two weeks ago my basement flooded and now my sewing area is in the dining room. Hope I have no visitors until after I finish this baby quilt I am working on - lol

Leota 08-21-2010 05:54 AM

can I use construction as an excuse for disaster area for my sewing room/house?

This is me too. I cannot start a new project if my room is a mess

grammyp 08-21-2010 06:20 AM

A cluttered desk is a sign of a creative mind. I am the most creative person around.

candiharris11 08-21-2010 06:21 AM

I'm from Slobovia when it comes to quilting. I do clean and put everything where it belongs before starting my next project though. Thank goodness my hubby is patient and goes along with it. I have to sew in the dinning room although my goodies are all in the back bedrooms with my quilting frame/machine.

Luv Quilts and Cats 08-21-2010 06:22 AM

I try to be neat when I sew. I have a cat and would not want her to swallow any threads or pins. Even though she doesn't seem interested in them, she has long hair and thread sticks to her. Since I don't have a place to leave things out, it's pack and unpack each time I sew, but I don't mind.

chamby 08-21-2010 06:22 AM

Are you kidding me. My husband tells me I can't even cook without making a mess. I tell him it is a sign of a genious at work. haha!! However, I do have to clean everything up before I can start anything new. Cooking or quilting.

mic-pa 08-21-2010 06:25 AM

I feel the same wau Leaha does, except my cutting table usually has the projects (several) that I am working on at present. Never stick to one project until it is finished. LOL

Stitchnripper 08-21-2010 06:52 AM

I start out neat with good intentions but, as the project progresses, things go downhill pretty fast.

MrsClaas 08-21-2010 07:35 AM

I finally have a sewing room - a "studio" after waiting for 33 years for our house to empty. I have a place for everything and it is usually right where it should be. Having grandkids helps to keep the things put away that they shouldn't touch! I love neat!!!

Katia 08-21-2010 08:04 AM

Someone that did not sew might think I have a messy sewing room. But I really just have a lot of stuff. I love to organize so most of the time the only mess is the normal mess that comes with any project. I also try to keep UFO's at a minimum.

Now the rest of the house could use some help. It is not a disaster, but it could use some work. I tend to go in my sewing room and forget about the rest of the house.

My sewing room also has tv and computer and is really my haven, so I try to keep it livable. I also can not work in a mess. I makes me crazy. It just dawned on me that what I can see where I normally sit is organized and looks great, but what is behind me is where I tend to pile stuff. Not messes really, but baskets of future projects or fabric that needs to be put away.

My mom used to sew in a mess, If she could get the fabric through her sewing machine she was good to go. In her defense the rest of the house was immaculate. Her sewing room was just where stuff was thrown when my dad did not know where else to put it. I was always telling her I would go in and help her clean and organize it, but she would not have it.

Chatfield 08-21-2010 08:31 AM

I like katmom54's theory..... a messy work area is a sign of creative genius... messy is good when it comes to quilting!

JoAnnB 08-21-2010 08:49 AM

I sew in a guest bedroom and use the bed to lay out all the fabrics I am using. I am forced to clean it off when one of our children or grandchildren come to stay. My sewing machine is always set up in that room.

I use two magnetic pin holders (bought at JoAnn's Fabrics. They are good for picking up pins off the carpet. Little pieces of thread are easy to pick up off the carptet with a piece of masking tape.

Jeri 08-21-2010 09:25 AM

I am BIG Time messy. Thank God I have a husband that built my own little shed off the garage. With bathroom and everything. I just walk out the door shut it behind me and go to the house. I am really blessed.

quiltinghere 08-21-2010 09:38 AM

When in the CREATIVE mood - everything up for grabs.

When I'm not in the CREATIVE mood - I tend to fall into the ORGANIZING mood.

Works for ME!

mjsylvstr 08-21-2010 09:43 AM

just bought one of the best things ever..don't know how I got along without it......
.............................a magnetic"pin-picker-upper"................

they are wonderful....dumped a whole container of pins the other evening and they were back in the tin in no time at all.....

The only time my room is what one would call "straightened up"
is when we go away for more than a few days.

why bother, it's only going to be back upside down again.......and i wouldn't be able to find a thing.

Subee 08-21-2010 10:22 AM

sometimes I am too neat...putting things away and then CANNOT FIND THEM! I do better with some creative clutter.
BUT...I do keep my pins neat!

ME! and yes can is right to the right of machine,, seems to move though when threads are falling toward it! fabric all over to find the right match, this 'n that, it ends up a total disaster!

katsewnsew 08-21-2010 10:56 AM

Messy is Good!

Any chance we could find a way to get your neatness habits to rub off on me - perhaps an electronic brain transfer? Try as I might, I can't seem to master it.

Olivia's Grammy 08-21-2010 12:32 PM

Two things I can stand is an unmade bed, unless the sheets are in the washer/dryer and dirty dishes in the sink. I don't like alot of clutter, but can handle it if in a hurry to get to the sewing studio.

Quiltntime 08-21-2010 01:01 PM

Same here - I just shut the door to my sewing room when I'm working on a project. Should have a poster on the outside saying - "Enter at your on risk". ;-)

khlrkat 08-21-2010 01:04 PM

My room you can not see the floor. I have my thing every wear, But i do clean up befor i start some new.

tdgiffin 08-21-2010 01:23 PM

I am a split-personality sewer! LOL To start I have everything all in order, etc. but once I get going....whooooeeee...mess! I think I am th eonly one who can make any sense out of the stuff that covers the dining table! :-)

steelecg 08-21-2010 01:45 PM

I start well but by the time I am finished it takes a while to clean up

MrsClaas 08-21-2010 01:50 PM

I guess I am a freak!!! I don't have alot of extra stuff sitting around in my room, only the project I am working on. And, I never start a new project until the one I am working on is complete. I can stay neat because of the way my room is set up, the sewing table is directly in front of my storage closet with all my supplies in it. I think my neat room is as close to heaven on earth as I can imagine. I have a sewing machine, phone, perfect ironing table, and no one to bother me there. My husband tells me he always knows where to find me.

grandme26 08-21-2010 02:36 PM

I am the Queen of the messy room and my sewing room is a section of my living room. Oh well it is my house and I can stand the mess for awhile, but have reached my limits and have started to pick up and clean up.

eimay 08-21-2010 02:38 PM

I fall in both groups. While sewing, I make a mess, but since I need structure (can you say adhd), I "schedule" my sewing. Each day I have a different quilting and embroidery project. Fridays and Saturdays (days that I work at LQS)are free choice and straightening up days. It works for me.

baglady65 08-21-2010 02:48 PM

Well I do have a a sewing too that is a mess right now and think it's stopping me from sewing alot. Daughter and her 2 boys just moving in with us this weekend and I figure they will be her a year or more. So I did have a plan to clean and get rid of stuff but 2 other rooms had to be cleared for them! Guess just what you do for your kids in need!

CoventryUK 08-21-2010 03:18 PM

Soo glad I joined this board!! Reading how others use their sewing space I realised I.m also a creative genius!! My room is 8ftx10ft(we have smaller houses in UK!!) it.s amazing how much "stuff" you can stash! wouldn.t dare post a pic on here at the moment!! Spent all day Friday at Quilt show so MORE bags n books!!

LadyCougar 08-21-2010 03:21 PM

How did you know what my area looks like while I'm working? It drives my hubby crazy.
