i must say that i am a messy quilter. during a project i have fabric and notions all over the place and not good about putting things away until finished with project. cut threads end up on the floor along with a lot of dropped pins - i try to pick those pins up before running vacuum. thing is i have a waste basket right there for threads cut off but the floor seems to catch more.

MZStitch 08-19-2010 06:19 PM

Yep, that's me. My sewing machine gets trashed by the time I finish a project. I do have a rule though, which I follow faithfully. Before starting a new project I completely clean it, down to seperating flower head pins from ball ended.

pocoellie 08-19-2010 06:23 PM

Messy, that's me. LOL

I sort pins, too.

katmom54 08-19-2010 06:32 PM

a messy work area is a sign of creative genius...

PMY in QCA-IL 08-19-2010 06:37 PM

Mine looks like a tornado went through it right now. I keep my shelves and drawers organized, but haven't been very good lately at putting stuff back where it belongs, not to mention adding a lot of my Mom's stuff that she won't be needing any more. Any cleaning elfs out there that you could send my way??

Lori L 08-19-2010 06:39 PM

I'm a slob :)

T-Bones mom 08-19-2010 06:44 PM

I admit I do get messy when working on a project, but I am a neat freak and have to put everything back in order before I start my next project. My DH is a slob and I even clean the garage so he will find things easier. Better than hearing him yell where is this and where is that. I just like things put where they belong.

sewnsewer2 08-19-2010 06:46 PM

I clean up after I'm done each day. I have too, my sewing room isn't that big and the kittens might get stuck in there and we all know that wouldn't be pretty.

leaha 08-19-2010 06:47 PM

as I some times work on several projects at the same time I have to have every thing in it's place, I can not work in a messy area, (have to do any dishs DH left in the kitchen, befor I can make myself a pot of tea.)And no I am by no means a neat freek, just have to have order and know where every thing is, when I want to use it.

I am an absolute slob while working on a project, and then have to clean up before starting a new one.

Frequently I have to clean up while in the middle of a project because some essential scrap of fabric has suddenly gone missing in the middle of the mess.

At night, when done, I have to cover everything with a towel so the cats don't 'rearrange' my blocks.

I do have to hide the pin cushion--Bad Kitty likes to pull the pins out with her teeth and all I need is for her to swallow one.

I agree. I must be a creating Einstein

My sewing room is a disaster at the present time, but since my machine is in for servicing, I have an entire week to get it cleaned up. As a matter of fact, I started today and found a half bolt of muslin that I'd been missing for about a month. That's bad - when you lose a bolt of fabric.

BellaBoo 08-19-2010 07:12 PM

My house is very sparse in belongings, everything has a place. I believe in less and more less. But when it comes to my quilting room I'm a total different person - stuff is piled on top of stuff when I'm making a quilt.

cjomomma 08-19-2010 07:13 PM

Right now I would say it is a disaster area. I have been doing extreme cleaning on the rest of the house and things are getting tossed in my little sewing area.

Fancy Nancy 08-19-2010 07:15 PM

glad to know i am not the only messy one - i do clean up before starting new project usually, unless trying to do several at once at crunch time, like xmas

Enough said.

deedum 08-19-2010 07:25 PM

I am a neat freak in my house sort of! When it comes to the sewing room, not so much. Maybe halfnhalf! I am messy in a organized sort of way!!! :)

Kitsie 08-19-2010 07:43 PM

My sewing area is my kitchen which I love and I keep that area kinda organized. Rather be sewing than "hunting". But the rest of the house? I live alone so who cares!

If you get those cleaning elves, send them to my house next!!

Rusty's Mama 08-19-2010 07:44 PM

I am so with you! I would like to be neater seems that thought vanishes when I'm in the middle of a project! Oh, I should say part of the mess is from the OTHER projects that are waiting their turn! And, when I do machine applique with tear away backing, watch out floor! The waste basket just never seems to catch it all!

sewingladydi 08-19-2010 07:53 PM

The floor in my sewing room is most often littered with lots of thread and little snippets of fabric. I don't know why the stuff doesn't make it to the waste basket.

I usually at least vacuum between projects.

My biggest problem is when I pull fabric out to "audition" it, I have a hard time forcing myself to refile it all back to it's proper place. That's why there's a big 3 foot pile of unsorted, unfolded fabric on the closet floor.

earthwalker 08-19-2010 07:58 PM

I am fairly neat but I like to have things organised my way. Minimalist, never, there are always piles of books, decorative boxes (filled with current projects, quilting supplies and bits and pieces), vases and jugs filled with flowers, various sleeping fur-people...found objects...stones and birds nests, interesting sticks - all this is found around the main house. As for my half of the workroom, well... a tottering heap of bags and boxes. Boxes of fabric and clothes/jeans to be cut up..which I am whittling away..but I just bought more today...so I guess I'm in a spot of bother.

All I lack is a cute small person like Mary Quite Contrary!

lclang 08-19-2010 08:06 PM

I generally have two or three projects in progress at a time and I have piles of stuff for each project here and there. It's never really neat but I do rearrange the piles occasionally. Right now I have a couple of table runners and two large candle mats going and since I use 2 1/2 inch squares sewed together for leaders and enders I have several piles of those handy, so it's not going to make the pages of Better Homes and Gardens. I do try to keep the scraps picked up but have a drift of UFO's against one wall. The leaders and enders will eventually become a "free" quilt as they are cut from my scraps.

OneMoreQuilt 08-19-2010 08:07 PM

I always have several projects going at once and get quite messy, but, If you ask me for something I can reach under a pile of fabric and find it for you!!!

C.Cal Quilt Girl 08-19-2010 08:37 PM

This is Funny..... Mine goes both ways, fairly organized, with the occasional pileup, Train wreck not cars!! :)

Mary Cute lil Helper :)

Mariposa 08-19-2010 08:54 PM

Mine may look messy, but I can find something if and when I need it. Several projects going and at different stages. I just remember that Einstein had a messy desk!! :)

quilt queen 2 08-19-2010 08:55 PM

I guess you could say I work well in organized chaos! I have a very small room to sew in along with a big stash. Right now I'm set up in the living room to have a space to do my machine quilting. I always have about at least 10 projects on the go! One thing I can say is that I never get bored, and thank goodness I have an understading husband I guess he's a keeper! :)

Rainy Day 08-19-2010 08:59 PM

Mary, how did that little cutie make such a great big mess?

annette1952 08-19-2010 09:28 PM

I am messy but I do have to clean up in between projects. I can only handle so much! LOL

CoyoteQuilts 08-19-2010 10:07 PM

Hint I learned (forget to use when just piecing) when I took a class on a longarm---pin a piece of batting to your shirt and put your cut threads there instead of tossing on floor or into basket. Threads stick to the batting and stay there unless you rub against something.....

mygirl66 08-20-2010 03:12 AM

I clean up at the end of the night when Im sewing, I cant work in a messy area, Im not a neat freak, but my sewing area has gone from 12x27 to 9x9, with a twin bed in there, so its pretty small. I get frustrated if I cant find something!

Juliebelle 08-20-2010 03:19 AM

I am usually pretty neat, try to clean up at the end of the day. My sewing room is in our bonus room so I do have to share the space. It is also where my grandson who is 4 plays his video games so I really make sure to keep all the cutting tools and pins put up. I am bad about leaving fabric out though.

moonrise 08-20-2010 03:23 AM

We're supposed to be neat?!?

I guess you could say my sewing room has an "organized chaos" motif. I try really hard to keep things put up, but am not always successful. But I do know where everything is!

My floor is hardwood (well, laminate) with a rug under my sewing chair. That rug catches EVERYTHING. I keep a trash can right beside me, and even have an empty cashew can on my table to toss snippets of thread and tiny bits of fabric in, but stuff STILL ends up in the floor somehow. Drives me crazy!

mawmawbeve_60 08-20-2010 03:35 AM

my room looks like a tornado,,..i sew ,and then clean...or try to..and put away fabrics or notions i have gotten out, but i tend to do it all after each project..

DeEtta 08-20-2010 04:35 AM

I can't seem to sew or embroidery without making a disaster out of my sewing room. I clean it up and then with the next project it gets the same way

maryb119 08-20-2010 04:52 AM

My house is neat and orderly but my sewing room......let's just say, I can't be neat AND creative at the same time!

mary quite contrary 08-20-2010 04:54 AM

My room isn't always this bad. We had 10 people living here most of the summer. My sewing room was used for more than just sewing. I didn't get much quilting done but we all sure had a good time.

I too normally clean between projects. It doesn't look that bad anymore but it isn't spotless either.

raptureready 08-20-2010 05:12 AM

Remember how Edward Scissorhands made it snow by creating ice sculptures? That's me when I sew---snippets, threads, pins, fabric, bobbins, scissors, flying every direction. I'm my own war zone and I'm dangerous. Then when I'm done with my project I look around in amazement wondering where all the mess came from.

ksea 08-20-2010 05:57 AM

Depends on what kind of a day my DH is having. He is OCD so if he has had a loud day about the DGK's stuff being out of place or what not, or my room being messy, and I am frustrated at hearing him, I might not clean up just because I don't have to.
