I agree with those that say a quilt is a top batting and backing. If it's got three layers sewn together, it is a quilt!

If I quilt it I call it a quilt. My coasters, potholders, doll blankets have and can be all quilted. It's more of an expression of style of finishing a sewn item, in my opinion.

I've seen brooches and earrings that were quilted.

I think if it has two or more layers that are fastened together and is intended to look like a quilt, I don't have a problem calling it a quilt.

IF however, you look only at the usefulness of the object, then ONLY those that are used for covering should be called quilt which includes knee throws and doll quilts but no wall hangings. Isn't it fun to make up your own rules?

What about summer quilts, which are pieced tops sewn to a backing without any middle layer? Is the third layer absolutely necessary?

I have never seen a summer quilt but thought about making one like that --- since it's not quilted is it a quilt? :-) not that I really care I still will make one and call it a 'throw'

The summer quilts I saw were quilted together all over, not just sewn together around the edges. One in particular was really pretty, the quilting looked like embroidered flowers all over.

To me, they looked like quilts...

Size doesn't matter...but I'm probably biased. My art quilts are as small as 6x6 mounted on an 8x8 canvas. Many other quilt artists also work small scale these days and they are all considered quilts as long as they follow the '3 layers held together by stitch' guideline.

I make sure to always add "quilted" to anything no matter how small (i.e. quilted coasters, quilted potholder, etc) :D

a quilt is 3 layers held together with stitching- size has nothing to do with it.

three layers its always a quilt.
