I would also select a dark fabric to frame the quilt that would coordinate with the fabrics in your piano key border. The binding is also the most worn area with most quilts.

I nearly always try to match whatever is on the front. I figure that the back is not seen half as much as the glorious front.

If you have enough of the lighter backing fabric, you could use it for the binding. The backing fabric would match nicely with the lighter parts in the front. If you want a dark strip on the front, take a look at Charisma's QB tutorial titled Quick Machine binding with flange. You could use the backing fabric for the main binding with a darker blue accent flange in the front. Beautiful quilt top!

(have only read page 1)
I favor the dark one, too. If the quilt is used, the edge is handled more, and a darker fabric doesn't show the handling wear as much. In the bottom picture, the backing fabric is "pointing" at a bamboo batik. If you use that, or the batik to the right of the bamboo one (with the purple peeking thru), either one is really dark, and will set off the front. But, they both also have lighter elements which will work with the back. |
I would us the darkest of the colors, whether the blue or green.

I don't think that I have ever considered what a binding looks like on the back, not going to put a quilt on the bed wrong side up, or facing the wall for a hanging, or on it's face on a table topper, so it has never been a bone of contention for me.

I match the front and don't worry about the back. Just the way I do it.

I do love batiks and you must have a pretty nice stash - can I come browse? Really think this is gorgeous and I agree with the darker border. That would frame it up nicely. Not talking you out of your backing, but a darker back and lighter to med thread color in your palette would be stunning to show off your special quilting. I have a special to me quilt that has a black back and we are using a med purple to show off the quilting, which I think it will.

Would go with the darker binding If you want to fabrics on your finding how about using the flange method.

I would use a medium to a dark fabric if you want to create a frame. I also think a scrappy border would look good and blend with your border. In fact the more I think about it, I would do a scrappy border.
