My stash is so small that I can go through it all in about 15 minutes. I have a box of fabric that I make bags with and I'm continually searching to see if I have one more combination to use. I would love to have DH ask that question but he won't because he can see what I'm working with. Congrats to all of you with that much fabric. I should have shopped when I was working and saved for a rainy day!
I would have to ask him to look at his work shop and tell me if he needed any new tools or material for his projects. That usually shuts him up
We just moved so I finally have a sewing room, it hasn't been straightened and sorted yet but dh's pretty good when he sees it. Never complains when I ask for something even though it would be coming out of the house budget. I was laughing about the price of a sewing table the other day and he said if you really want something like that - get it. I don't. I'd rather buy stuff at yardsales, I appreciate finding them more than I would just buying it in a store, I got a wonderful French Country style kitchen table for 20.00 that I'm planning on using for my sewing table and I love the look of it. And a ton of people have shared their scraps with me so I have plenty of scraps to play with and didn't hurt the budget at all except for postage.

I swear my stash grows overnight! AM making some Christmas presents and am determined to use up some of the stash. So when DH asks how much the fabric cost for the tablerunners, I said it was free since I already had the material and didn't have to go shopping!
Good answer. He probably won't wander in there again. LOL

Great answer! I just got my stash out of storage and dh had the nerve to say i wouldn't have to buy more fabric for years... the nerve!

I'm one of the fortunate ones here. My hubby never complains about my fabric/notions and takes me shopping too.
In fact he likes to come into my "room" and see what I'm doing and makes lots of positive comments.. If I'm on the quilt board looking around, he listens to what we are all discussing and just smiles and shakes his head... He says "whatever makes you happy" ..... Yeah, he is a sweetheart:) |
My husband just bought over $200 dollars worth of tools and misc. stuff at Harbor Freight. I waited till we were driving home and said, " I need to get some brown flannel to finish my brother's Christmas quilt". He didn't say a word. Remember ladies...Timing is everything. hahahahahaha

There is no such thing as toooooooooo much fabric. I have the same problem, yes I have lots of fabric but it doesn't go together. I have been on a strict fabric diet and yesterday the dam broke. I had 2 60% off at Jo-Ann fabric and started my holiday binge. I am anxiously awaiting the Black Friday flyer from Jo-Ann Fabric to do further damage
My dh knows how much fabric I have. I brought him into my sewing room and had him sit at my chair and I took him on a tour of all my fabric. ALL of it! His mouth dropped open when I started opening closets, storage bins, dressers, a storage unit, my bookcase, my old fashioned desk, etc. He didn't say one word...just walked out with his mouth still open. I have soooo much fabric and soooo many quilt kits that if I never bought another piece of fabric, I wouldn't run out. BUT, they always come out with new fabric lines and who can pass those by. But I do need backing.
DH seldom comes to my sewing room unless I need his help moving something or changing the light bulbs. I seldom go to his shop unless he needs me to hold/push/pull/ something while he adjusts a tool or project. We are not a shadow couple at all. LOL
Husbands should never ask Questions about fabric
Exactly my situation too. I see a pretty piece of fabric and buy
it but I never have cream/white and or a plain black. We just never pick them up unless its designated for a certain quilt. It takes the plain colors to set off the beautiful fabrics so we do need both. Every day brings new ideas and fun projects. |
I am very fortunate to have a husband that takes me shopping and doesn't get upset when I buy fabric. He sees that I never over spend and I am always making something so it's not like I don't use any of it! I do have him convinced that you don't have to use your fabric just have it to admire on a shelf just like a pretty figurine in a collections. :-)
My DH is one of the good ones, too. He does not complain about anything I buy for anything. We are in the process of closing in our back porch for me to have a sewing room (his idea.) He just ordered me a new sewing table (his idea.) He doesn't understand, but does not mind my obsession with quilting books/magazines. And he really does not care how much fabric I buy.
However ... he just does not "get" the stash thing! His comments are along the lines of why do you need this when you don't know what you're going to do with it yet. Just make anything you want to, Baby, and buy whatever you need to make it with then. I try to explain it to him, that for scrappies you need all these bits and pieces. He loves me and would do anything for me, but he just doesn't understand having a stash! Bless his heart ... |
Yup, thats thinking on your feet!!!!!
I always seem to be lacking the color I need for a project. The greens in my stash are never quite right for the job or the pink has to much yellow or blue . If I need a red it's to gray, etc. So it's off to the store I go!:D
peace |
My DH does not ask. Although, I do work part time for "stash cash." Even when I go over budget he never says anything. He has a shop full of stuff he does not want to be queried about. Hee hee.
Ha ha I love it! Good answer.
Well, I have fabric and my husband has fishing poles, so we even each other out!
With me I'm just starting to build a stash but even at that he still looks at my bins and says you don't need anymore (he belongs to a couple of wine clubs) so my response back to him was "you don't need anymore wine either so we're even" lol Why do they think they can pull one over on us they should know by now we're the brains in the family!
sadly..I am NOT lacking for anything..EVER....
I don't care how much fabric I have I'll always be missing something and DH shouldn't worry because when he needs a tool or something I don't ? him except sometimes to tease him. It's best they don't know about the fabric and thread at the moment. Their to cute. Sue

Can't have too many whites, blacks, and greens.

I guess I am very fortunate also. I have a good stash, I have been a sew-a holic all my life and got into patchwork and quilting in the early 80's.
My DH just shakes his head and says he doesn't want to know!!! I once complained that I didn't have a particular colour and his answer was.......Rubish! you would have every colour there is plus five that haven't been invented!!! I live in the country and having a good stash has the advantage of not having to go to town especially to buy a particular piece of fabric. I mostly work in my sewing room at night and the local quilt shop is not open in the wee hours. My DH is also very good at waiting in the car outside Quilt shops. Luckily for me he enjoys reading the newspaper. |
my stash is just started--what i need most of all are blenders and neutrals. my husband blanched at some $3/ yd fabric! oh, how innocent they are!hahahaha. i find it's easier to shop during the day while he's at work.

My DH nevers complains about me buying fabric...it would do any good. No need to raise his blood pressure. I am lacking good background fabrics like the tone on tone whites and creams. It seems that when i use something from my stash, i have to go to the quilt shop because I am missing one piece of a certain color that will work well with the others pieces to complete the quilt. Then , I see something else that I can't live without and buy some of that too. It's a never ending battle.
I guess you told him, HUH? :D That's a good one.
:D :D :D :D |
My DH never questions how much I spend on fabric but then we have separate finances and so long as our bills are paid he doesn't mind. I love scrappy so I need lots of different small pieces. I can never have enough creams/off whites and never enough scraps. My LQS just closed and I stocked up on 2 metre pieces for borders and some 5 metre cuts for backing. I am also now the owner of a bolt each of black and cream extra wide quilters muslin and a bolt of plain red I use for charity quilts. I work full time but would sew at least 2-3 times a week.

Love your quote. Last year when my companion of 19 years passed away, I stumbled upon the following sustaining quote: Don't cry because it's gone; Smile because it happened.
My husband has learned not to ask that question anymore!

I am lacking all the wonderful fabrics in my head, that I know would look good somewhere.
He may have asked you so he knows what to get you for christmas.
I don't think I am lacking anything, but you never know what I have might not go with next quilt.
I need the white on white and off whites. In 2012 I plan to use a lot of my stash, but I will continue to buy fabric at garage sales and other bargin places. I love the thrill of the hunt for bargins.

needing more fabrics ????????
Do we need more fabric? Yes, of course - always.
My husband never complains about fabric purchases and has on occasion even helped me shop. The one comment I had to reply to from him was when he saw the price of the new Viking in a magazine. He said "Wow! Just think how much sewing you'd have to do to pay for one of those!'. My reply was, "And how much fishing you'd have to do to pay for a Bass Boat.". We both laughed at that.
