Husbands should never ask questions about fabric...

DH came into my sewing room, cave, sanctuary the other day and looked around and asked...How many quilts can you make before you would run out fabric??? He thought it was an innocent question so he could be a smartass the next time I "needed" fabric lol The joke was on him because then I had to explain what I was lacking... so out of all your stash what are you lacking????
I'm lacking....cream and white fabrics
yardage for backings

CoventryUK 11-20-2011 01:41 AM

Haha!! Good answer!!!! Well done!!! Always good to be one step ahead!!!:D

Retired GI Jo 11-20-2011 01:57 AM

Truthfully??? Actually, I'm lacking nothing! I am trying to piece my backings now, except for 2 Double Wedding Rings my mom hand sewed for me. Those will get white muslin. Everything else is pieced. But, I can always find a place for a few more pieces of fabric!

Good answer!! Woohoo, you go girl! :-)

mmdquilts 11-20-2011 03:02 AM

Great answer! I just got my stash out of storage and dh had the nerve to say i wouldn't have to buy more fabric for years... the nerve!

sandyl 11-20-2011 03:09 AM

Ah, if only they knew....

bearisgray 11-20-2011 03:38 AM

This is one area where I think the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy is a good one.

MissM 11-20-2011 03:41 AM

That is easy, I am always lacking something...because I have more projects in my head than time.:)

carolaug 11-20-2011 03:48 AM

We took all of my fabric and sewing stuff out of my sewing room today (we are having some of my son's friends for thanksgiving since they are stationed far from home)...bought 100.00 worth of plastic bins...not nearly enough and I already had quite a few. I have a closet still stuffed with fabric...YIKES...my husband never says a word but I am...I am not buying any more fabric untill I really make a hudge dent into my stash....the only thing I may get is some fat qtrs but only theme ones and only if my LQS goes on sale for .99 cents. I am embrassed on how much fabric I have collected in one year...

My DH knows how much I love fabric and loves taking me fabric shopping. My stash is FAR too big but I have a master plan. I am not wasting my resources; I am "Project Linus-ing" my stash down! I took 19 pieced tops in about 2 months ago and I have 15 more ready to go. I realized that I could also provide pieced backs for these tops so more stash gets gone. I put together backs for half of the ones I have ready as well. With this plan, I am making a (little) dent and feel really good about my stash and it's future.

I do not have many creme or whites either...or too many solids actually which is strange because I love solids LOL..Diana

Juliebelle 11-20-2011 04:06 AM

that is great my husband does not even ask because my standard answer is "how many golf clubs does one man need"

catladyquilts 11-20-2011 04:16 AM

why do men insist upon coming into our "woman caves" and asking silly questions?

Crafty1 11-20-2011 04:20 AM

Haha, good answer!

nanna-up-north 11-20-2011 04:23 AM

My husband is a collector...... I'm a collector...... we don't challenge each other about our collections..... I do worry that when I'm gone, my kids are going to have one heck of a job cleaning out my sewing area!!

dkabasketlady 11-20-2011 05:34 AM

Thankfully my DH doesn't ask & I don't tell!!

KarenK 11-20-2011 09:19 AM

I'm a tad short on neutrals and solids.

valleyquiltermo 11-20-2011 09:32 AM

I'm short on solids. But hubby never ask about my incoming pkgs or what I will do with all that fabric.

crafty pat 11-20-2011 09:38 AM

Good answer. I would have told mine I really need more fabric now. He never looks where I keep my my fabric so he has no idea how much I have.

Good for you! With my husband it's golf clubs AND power tools. How many does he need? Until he finds another one that looks good to him.

QuiltingCrazie 11-20-2011 11:14 AM

Thanks ladies so glad
I'm not alone!!!!

Gramie bj 11-20-2011 12:51 PM

I am missing creams, tans, off whites, whites, grays, Just finished a quilt and used the last of each in it. What scraps I have left are already being used up in a new design for a scrappy nutral quilt. but that quilt may become a UFO for a while as of Dec.31 I am putting a stop to my fabric buying untill I use some of what I have.

Earleen 11-20-2011 01:12 PM

When we go fabric shopping the DH always wants me to get more than I need, he also picks out fabric,(some I wonder what the heck will I ever do with it) we sure have different taste. Glad he dosen't care what I buy, as he always needs a new tool.

Jazzz 11-20-2011 01:39 PM

Ha ha...good for you!!! My husband's question is always..."how much ($$) do you really think is here?"

deedum 11-20-2011 03:29 PM

I am lacking some bright colorful material. I find that I have collected many florals, and materials from many of the past years. Some was given to me, some I got on clearance, great for scrappies quilts. I am lacking solid pieces of fabric. Apparently I need to work on updating my stash!

Quiltngolfer 11-20-2011 03:59 PM

My husband asks things like that from time to time, but he keeps taking me to fabric stores to buy more. He doesn't care really.

Alex J 11-20-2011 04:02 PM

That will teach him to be a smartass LOL

QUILTNMO 11-20-2011 04:03 PM

i made a promise to myself this would be the year i didnt buy fabric and i kept that promise to myself waiting for jan to get here so i can shop i have used alot from my stash but still have aloti have made 100 baby quilts this yearfor newborns in need and few for linus

Pinkiris 11-20-2011 04:50 PM

I'm seriously short on reds that aren't Christmas themed. But I won't tell my husband that because the next time I come home with fabric, he'll ask " Did you get the red fabric that you needed?" I'll be "busted" if my bag is full of everything BUT red!

My DH nevers complains about me buying fabric...it would do any good. No need to raise his blood pressure. I am lacking good background fabrics like the tone on tone whites and creams. It seems that when i use something from my stash, i have to go to the quilt shop because I am missing one piece of a certain color that will work well with the others pieces to complete the quilt. Then , I see something else that I can't live without and buy some of that too. It's a never ending battle.

lovedquilts 11-21-2011 04:16 AM

My husband is definetly don't ask don't tell lol

heather1949 11-21-2011 04:22 AM

Good for you... keeping up with womens issues, is womens work LMAO.

mpspeedy 11-21-2011 05:15 AM

I just went out yesterday and purchased some storage boxes. I am hosting Thanksgiving and my sister-in-law, who is also a quilter will be here. I am sure she will want a tour of my quilting stuff. I tried to organize a little. I am in the middle of making my monthly quota of Linus quilts as well as little "pillowcase" dresses for one of my church's chairity projects as well as embroiderying the front of some sweatshirts I got on sale from Walmart for me to wear this winter. The embroidery helps to hide the food stains that somehow always land on my more than generous chest. The sister-in-law is envious because I was able to turn my daughter's former bedroom into my quilting/sewing/computer room. She still has two fulltime sons living at home who will probably never leave. My fabric stash is for the most part stored in a backroom off my club basement. Most of the fabric is in boxes and other storage containers. My official sewing room only houses 4 machines and a small cutting/ironing station.

WMUTeach 11-21-2011 05:23 AM

Alternate response: I love your creativity and skills but can you tell me how many houses, book shelves and home repair projects, etc., etc., etc. can you make with your stash of wood and other materials and tools in the garage? Love you.

#1piecemaker 11-21-2011 05:29 AM

My DH quilts now too. so, I don't have to worry about him very much. But, at first it took me a while to explain about needing different colors and things that match and especially the significance of what scrappy is all about. Now, that he is quilting. He is always searching for different colors!

Deb watkins 11-21-2011 05:30 AM

Gee, my answer would be, " How many more boxes of golf balls do you need to buy to continue your golf game?"

sewmom 11-21-2011 05:32 AM

I think I have a decent stash, until I start to make something that I haven't specifically planned for. Then I always have to run to the store to get whatever I was lacking. It's a horrible way to live, but someone has to do it! LOL
