I cut my backing too short. Gaaa :-( :x  Now I have to add a strip to the bottom. Why didn't I lay it out before I cut it? Well, considering this is my first (and ONLY) king sized quilt, lesson learned. Sigh....
Aahhh, yes, we have all done such things. It will be beautiful and a lesson learned is a good thing (smile). Show us pics when it is all done. Thank you for sharing.
Thankfully it's the back. Actually this will give you an opportunity to do something creative on the back. Why not split the difference and cut some off the sides, then frame the entire backing?
Add the strip to the middle, just like you planned!
Now THIS is why I love what Momma always used to say.... "Oh don't worry, a man goin' by on horseback ain't gonna notice!"
(Of course, we were never allowed to use that vernacular, but she loved this phrase...) Remember, once it's quilted, no one will see it!! |
Add some "back art" and claim it like you meant to do that.
I actually do this on purpose all the time. I've really gotten into the pieced backs.
I had a queen sized one all laid out and pinned, ready for quilting. Once I started quilting, I realized I was short on one side. I just cut an extra piece and added it there. It will be fine!
Most of us have done the same at one time or another. Just be glad you noticed it now before quilting.
Geez! I can't count the number of times I've done that. And it's uisually when I want to match a large repeat too.
oh, yeah: Most of us have done that!
I did it on my first quilt, a lap quilt no less! I cut it wrong once, then remeasured and cut it wrong again! Had to go buy more fabric. Oh yeah! I feel your pain. |
I came up short on the backing for a queen sized quilt awhile back and all that I did was add a strip in the middle of the backing and all was well! Besides, who is going to see it!
What a shame. But it happens way to often.
Just had a similar experience although it wasn't a cutting error. I beleived the person in the LQS as to yardage. Needed to buy more. I ended up having to piece the extra yardage and then I added to the middle as Debd suggested.
It's just a creative moment in disguise! :)
I've done the same thing more than once.

...a creative moment in disguise....I like that!!!!
Been there - done that! That's why it's called "patchwork"!
Been there, done that. Its just a way of making you use your "noodle" as my Mom used to call it. Get creative and move forward...it will all work out!
That is what I would do....add a border to it...
My theory is, when someone is so close to the back of a quilt that they will be able to see through the quilting design that there was an extra strip added on to one side, they won't notice because their eyes will be closed because they are sleeping!
I have done that before too. Good thing is that you will remember next time.
been there, done that----very few of my backs seem to be all one color......
Boy can I relate to this. I just add what I need and pretend it was suppossed to be that way. lol
My avatar is actually the back of a comfort quilt I made. I had planned to do the back all in one fabric, but didn't buy the backing fabric at the same time I bought the fabric to piece the top. When I completed the top, I didn't want to stop working on the quilt until I could shop for the backing fabric and started piecing together leftovers from the top and added some fabrics from my stash. I ended up liking the pieced back as much as the top.
You could be very creative with what you do and put a strip at the top and bottom, or do the frame of the whole back like someone suggested. Piecing the back sure adds a lot of interest. |
I took some of your suggestions, and since I had a rather large strip left over that was already sewn together, I split the backing in half, inserted the strip across the middle, and voila - instant length :)
I was planning on quilting it on my machine, but I gave up because I simply couldn't get this massive thing pinned right, so I'm going to wait until my friend is finished with the king quilt she currently has on her long-arm and use that instead. Since I'm not doing a fancy design, it shouldn't take more than a day or so to finish using her machine. She's such a gem to allow me to use her machine - I just have to provide my own thread - she provides the machine and her expertise, along with great company. I'll definitely bring lunch when I go though :) |
Any of the suggested ideas will work fine. Like my yoga teacher always says...No worries!
Oh yes, done this, too. This is your own personal creative moment.
Next to no one looks at the back...not to worry and like others said once it is quilted...next to no one will notice or care....I piece backings all the time to make them fit.
Never fails - lessons learned forever Teri
THERE IS HOPE!!! I can cut ACROOS the backing, in the middle. Place a fabric (insert) that goes with your quilt top and backing between the 2 halves. If that looks too strange to you, cut across the backing is 3 places, do the same but using narrower insets. I have done this one SO OFTEN! Or had fabric I really wanted to use, and it wasn't the right length. REMEMEBER: quilter's secret :D YOU are the only one that will know those inserts were not part of the quilt plan! Julie |
I recently did a brown quilt (just tan and dark brown) put it in my mid-arm quilt frame and really whipped out the quilting. As I rolled the quilt (that left about 36" left to quilt) suddenly I saw that my quilt back was going to end about 18" short!!! I had pieces of the tan and dark brown that were each about 4" wide. I took the quilt loose from the frame (on the unquilted side) unrolled enough of the quilted portion to pull it down far enough to hang off. Then I sewed all of those 4" strips together put my sewing machine on my rolling sewing chair and sewed that extra piece to the quilt back - rolled the quilted part back on and reattached the quilt back. The whole point of the story is my customer thought it was wonderful. The quilt was 108" square. She puts the pieced back at the top - turns it down and tops it with pillows with dark brown cases. Sometimes a mistake turns out to be awsome!!
I've done that too. Hate it when things like that happen. Look on the bright side - it will probably only happen once! And your once is done!
Make a strip of the colors you used on the front from your scraps and you will be just fine. I love this look on the backs of quilts.
It was demanding back art with your label in it! Quilts do speak to us, you know.
Maybe a good place for the label?
make a row of blocks and add it to the center of the backing. will look great!!

Done it before too, but hopefully never again.

Cut the piece in 1/2 and add the strip through the center which will make it look like you meant to do it- Always keep them guessing
