I Love Quilts

I'm a new quilter and have only pieced two tops and quilted one. My DH says this doesn't make me a quilter.

I love the fabrics, tools, sewing machines, books, patterns, videos. I think I'm addicted to quilting without really making quilts. ;-)

He's so mistaken! You ARE a quilter! Welcome to our world! :)

Rose L 05-02-2012 06:20 AM

You are a quilter! One quilt done makes it so and I'm sure there will be many many more to come. Enjoy!

Pat625 05-02-2012 06:22 AM

A quilter loves what they do...could he be jelous that he isn't one of us???

Neesie 05-02-2012 06:26 AM

A quilter is one who quilts. You most certainly ARE a quilter! "Pblblblbblffffttt!" to DH! :p

Welcome, from FELLOW QUILTERS!!! :)

sharon b 05-02-2012 06:30 AM

You are a quilter- have have all the signs and symptoms :) It is addictive

MdmSew'n'Sew 05-02-2012 06:30 AM

Of course you are a quilter! One doesn't decide to become a doctor and go out the next day and perform an appendectomy. Reading books, watching videos, learning about the tools of the art is all part of the process. Quilting is something in your heart and soul, that's what makes you a quilter. The quilts themselves are only an outward sign of what you have learned, how you express what is inside of you. You are taking your first steps on this wonderful journey. Enjoy every moment of this trip, welcome aboard!

And I'm with Neesie - a big sloppy raspberry to any who say otherwise!

auntpiggylpn 05-02-2012 06:37 AM

He's a man, what does he know about what makes a quilter a quilter! (LOL)

Tweety2911 05-02-2012 06:48 AM

Yes, you are a quilter with two quilts under your belt. Be proud!!!!

sandy l 05-02-2012 07:13 AM

One or one hundred, after the first quilt, you are a quilter. You've started down the road, so enjoy the journey:)

Annie68 05-02-2012 07:33 AM

Yup, you are a quilter! Join the rest of us in this fabulous and fun adventure called quiltmaking!

: )

dunster 05-02-2012 07:41 AM

For a long time after I started quilting, whenever a sales person would ask me what I was going to do with my fabric purchase I would say "I'm learning to quilt." It took me quite a while to say "I'm a quilter." Perhaps this is what your husband is feeling, although I agree with everyone else - you are a quilter!

mighty 05-02-2012 10:07 AM

Oh yes a quilter you are!!!!! Enjoy!!!!!

LadyElisabeth 05-02-2012 10:58 AM

Of course, you are a quilter. I take my special guy with me to shows and exhibits and HE takes the photos. He is beginning to look with quilters eyes.

jcrow 05-02-2012 11:10 AM

Does he have a specific amount of quilts you have to make before you become a quilter? Do you have to spend a certain amount of $$ before you become a quilter? Do you have to own a certain amount of sewing machines before you become a quilter? Ask him how much money it is going to cost before he thinks you are a quilter. I bet that will shut him up. And after my first pieced quilt, I became a quilter. And, I have never quilted a quilt except hand quilted 3/4 of a wall hanging and I don't call myself a piecer. I'm a quilter because I make quilts. No rules say you have to quilt your own quilts. There are thousands of long arm quilters out there who make a living quilting other quilter's quilts.

leatheflea 05-02-2012 03:45 PM

Yes it does! Tell him we said so! LOL....congrats on your new found love. Hope you enjoy the board and all the wonderful people here. We love to see finished projects! And of course give our opinions on just about anything!

momto5 05-02-2012 04:03 PM

The only way to get even with him is to get him "addicted" to quilting as well...:)

barny 05-02-2012 05:24 PM

Well, no one becomes an instant {whatever] not even your husband, nor anyone else. If we don't keep learning, we become dead. We learn until we die. I'm 83 and still learning everwhere. I'm not being ugly to your husband. It's just a fact.

BETTY62 05-02-2012 05:33 PM

Welcome to the board from the state of Texas. I have ony made 6 quilts along with several small quilted items. I love quilting. I am addited to quilting and all things related to it. Tell your hubby it only gets worse.

Debbie C 05-02-2012 05:42 PM

Don't listen to him - men just can't help themselves!! You are now a quilter and we welcome you to this board with open arms!!

Pickles 05-02-2012 06:30 PM

Grandma Peg 05-02-2012 06:33 PM

Once you are biten by the bug you are quilter. It doesn't take much lol.

spokanequilter 05-02-2012 06:55 PM

Oh poo on your DH!! Of course you're a quilter!! Once you've finished the first one and moved on to a second, you get to be called a quilter. :)

Exactly! My ex used to refer to my quilts as"blankets"... can you see why I kicked him to the curb? LOL!

Silver Needle 05-02-2012 07:53 PM

Of course you are a quilter. This is just how I felt when I first started and I haven't lost the passion for quilting yet. It's my reason for getting out of bed in the morning. What does he think defines "quilter". His definition is probably just not the same as most of ours.

jaciqltznok 05-03-2012 05:08 AM

know people who haven't even done that much and they call themselves "quilter's". when what they really are is simply fabric collector's!

glorcour 05-03-2012 05:21 AM

Welcome to the addiction. You will constantly amaze yourself with your accomplishments. And it keeps you off the streets and out of the pubs!!!

pastorpatti04 05-03-2012 05:34 AM

Oh men, they think they know everything. If you aren't a quilter, then what does he say you are? HaHa. My dh is clueless except for the living room and dining room overtaken by fabric. You quilt on, quilter!!! I am not all that far from you, I am in Davidsville, near Somerset, I go to Pittsburgh regularly.

DJinSC 05-03-2012 05:35 AM

Oh honey, you are a quilter! This thread was good for me to read. I've been quilting for about 9 years now. For the longest time I hesitated to call myself a quilter. I guess I didn't think I had earned that title, or was good enough. But I've been obsessed with quilting since my first class. I may not be a good one, but I am a quilter.

stitchquick 05-03-2012 06:08 AM

I was call in spirit to be a quilter, in was in my heart, i got desire of my heart , praise thee!!!! life gave me lemon but God gave me quilting i got lemonad

bunbytes 05-03-2012 06:40 AM

I think husby can't qualify as a "judge" as to who is a quilter or not since he's not involved in the process. No offense, but I think that's pretty tacky of him to denounce your status as a quilter!

CarrieC 05-03-2012 07:09 AM

In my humble opinion once the quilting sickness has bitten you you're a quilter - PERIOD.

This is so funny to me since I have a new sewing buddy who I'm teaching. She usually "shops" from my stash but now that she's acquiring scraps she's now calling her "stash". I have to laugh at her & tell her now she's a true quilter when she has a "stash".

hensandhollyhocks 05-03-2012 08:19 AM

Sounds like you have all the symptoms to me.

teddysmom 05-03-2012 10:33 AM

Of course you're a quilter. Don't let him tell you otherwise. MEN.......

Threadbanger 05-03-2012 10:38 AM

Just tell your DH that you want to be a quilter and to do that not only must you make quilts, you must obtain the most high-tech sewing machine around and spend $500 a month in buying fabric. He might relent and say, "No you made a quilt and that's all it takes to be a quilter". Otherwise, take him shopping for new gadgets and fabric!

PS Stitcher 05-03-2012 11:16 AM

Pish Posh!! Tell that hubby of yours to zip it!! :D In a nice way of course! You ARE a quilter!! The minute that you ran your hands over fabric and felt all fuzzy and warm, you were a quilter!! Way to go!!

Lol... That's exactly how I felt when I began. But I think it does make you a quilter. :) <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" height="1" width="1">

Does HE have a hobby? How long did it take for him to become proficient? After his first "whatever" he was probably as addicted as you are. Raspberries to the self-proclaimed judge.

lmiller1978 05-03-2012 12:04 PM

Honey....I have been a quilter since I was 5 years old, playing with my dolls underneath my great-grandma's quilting frame that hung from the garage ceiling at my great-aunt's as 4 beautiful and skillful ladies chatted and stitched the day away....My love started early...the addiction came later when I started "rescuing" quilts from garage sales and thrift stores and people's trash piles and restoring them....now I restore and make my own quilts...I have a room in the upstairs of my house that is only for quilting....NO HUBBY, NO KIDS, NO PETS....just me and my addiction. So in an essence...you don't have to justify your "being, or not being" a quilter to anyone, including your hubby, as mine doesn't understand it either....but he does foot the fabric bill most of the time...lol...Quilting is in your heart =)
