I am starting a new quilt: I have a yard of this (dragon print) and three yards of each of Black, Red, and White, with some leftover gray. I am thinking about doing a crazy trim job around the designs of the center dragon, applaque' that in the center piece of white fabric with some kind of Traponto work to that, then use the other colors as well to frame out the so called (madallion) with some kind of pieced blocks to fill out the rest of top. See Pics... What do you think?

This is the STUFF

This is sideways, but a closer look at the detail

Wow, like the colors, what pattern are you going to use?

susiequilt 03-26-2010 04:54 PM

I think that's a great idea. Be sure and post pictures as you go along.

lynsews 03-26-2010 04:59 PM

I love the dragon fabric ... almost bought some last week. I'm not great at this, but I think the applique might look better against the black or red, rather than white. You could use the red, white, black and gray in some kind of pattern around the center and for borders. Just an idea!

EllaBud 03-26-2010 05:00 PM

That's going to be one gorgeous quilt. Please post pictures as you go along.

OLDNTATTED 03-26-2010 05:01 PM

I was thinking of using the center dragon and the fluffy stuff around that. Then make it stand out with high pile loft under it when I app it to the white center square. I need some pieced squares for the outside frame, with a orental theme to them. Maybe I could do some thread sketching on the solid fabric of (like) pagotas and pandas things like that.

EllaBud 03-26-2010 05:04 PM

Oh, btw, where did you get the dragon fabric? It's fabulous!

Thats what I'm looking for Ideas, designs, or blocks.

I'm using that dragon fabric as the binding for my dd's black and white quilt...

And the orange-purple version to make DH a "skirt" for his desk at school.

At any rate, you are a better quilter than I to want to cut out that dragon! I need pics later!

OLDNTATTED 03-26-2010 05:20 PM

Each one of the dragons are 21" X 11" so I thought one in the center would look nice.

Rebecca VLQ 03-26-2010 05:26 PM

^^^I bet it will look awesome....the dragon is fantastic.

Glenn 03-26-2010 05:45 PM

I think your idea is great and would go far it. That is great fabric.
Please post pictures when finished. Glenn :D

littlehud 03-26-2010 06:40 PM

It sounds great. I love that dragon fabric. It's awesome. I can't wait to see your quilt.

athenagwis 03-27-2010 03:05 AM

Love that dragon fabric!! I like the idea of fussy cutting the dragon, though I think it's a shame to cut right into that pretty fabric. :) :) Good luck!! Can't wait to see how it comes out!

patricej 03-27-2010 03:13 AM

i would also plaster the dragon to either the black or the red. it will stand out more. all that fussy cutting and applique work will deserve all the attention it can get. :-)

Here are two that may work for you,

I like the black personally,

MadQuilter 03-27-2010 12:53 PM

I like the dark much better than the white but I think it is still a little too busy. A black on black would really pop the dragon more.

Have you considered getting a full width fabric and doing ALL applique? That would be smashing. Then you could do all those flames that were talked about in cute's PDA.

chris_quilts 03-27-2010 01:53 PM

I agree with MadQuilter, the black is better but too busy.

I bought some of that same fabric and amde pillowcases for my DDs BFF and then a couple for her. Her BFF loves the ho,memade pillowcases as presents plus her mom thinks I'm sew talented. NOT!! but can make pillowcases.

Here is the solid black, and red. Any ideas

The print pops on this as well

Lucky me The two reds match

BKinCO 03-27-2010 02:45 PM

I like the first black....for some reason, to me, the dragon sort of blends onto the red...

OLDNTATTED 03-27-2010 05:13 PM

OK the votes are in I'll use the swerrrrrly black for the center piece.

Here is the first stage. I cut the background to just over 18" X 24". I put two layers of cotton batting under only the dragon part of the print.

This is the start

Wow, ingenious and really neat.

BKinCO 03-28-2010 10:58 AM

That is just AWESOME!!!!! I'm jealous of your talent!

NauDeeGal 03-28-2010 11:13 AM

Wow! I really like your idea and work on the large dragon block! I especially like the black swirl print you went with. Kinda of adds to the mystical of the dragon! Awesome work!
Have you found block ideas to go around it yet?

I got a present from my MoM (cutie) paper piecing Lantern called Patio lights. So with my little guy in tow, We whent to Jo-Anns. Picked up just about all of the fabric I could find with an orental theme. I really like the one at the bottom W/ the lotus blossoms. There is also a few with gold metalic print thruout to tie them in to each other, and I had to get the print W/ the Kongie letters on it (just have to dig out My Konjie book to find out just what they mean... Wouldn't whant some joker over there putting something that someone might just know how to read it say Hay Ray do you know what this means ...
I did put some FM work on the edges. Made it look kind of like flames (I hope)

This is the black thread and double cotton batting under

Shows the red, orange, and yellow thread work

This is the fabric to add to the first batch

Here is my opinion and you will have many others. So here goes.....first off the dragon material is spectacular, why would you want to cut it up and do applique of the dragon?? I would use the dragon and it's background like a panel, that way it would pull the other colors you are showing into the quilt and give it some harmony. Don't bring too many other colors in, I like the ones you have chosen. Also don't use too busy a block to surround it. You don't want to detract from the dragon as he is the focal point of the quilt. Do something simple and oriental. like an applique over a border simulating a Japanese screen.

Yeah. My thought? Send it to Colorado! :)

Ditter43 04-08-2010 03:10 PM

What if you made a d9p out of the red, black and white; then applique the dragon on that? Just a thought, I like your idea too.
