I need a quick baby quilt that looks complicated!
I just received an invite to a baby shower that is only 5 days away. Can you recommend a pattern that is easy but looks like it took a lot of time?
10 minute block
The fastest for me would be a rail fence in 3 or 4 coordinating fabrics. I would strip-piece sets, then cut into squares. After piecing the center I might add a border (or 3) out of remaining fabrics.
A DP9 would take me a little longer (have to create 9-patch blocks, cut them, then reassemble) but it looks complicated. Warm Wishes is another one that would take me a little longer, but it's really easy to do with a focus fabric and two solid colors. |

Wonky Stars! 2 1/2" squares, lots of scraps!!

This is maybe not what you had quite in mind - there are lots of gorgeous baby panels that look amazing with trapunto and some lovely borders.

MSQC put up a pattern a bit ago called The Merry Go Round quilt. It looks kind of like the Garden Maze pattern but is really simple if you watch Jenny's youtube video.
The classic "looks hard but is easy" is the D4P. But why does it need to look complicated? Simple can be really pretty too, just letting the fabrics have the spotlight. A simple 9 patch with prints alternated with white would be really sweet.

Chevron made with strips, cut and placed on the diagonal. If you know the gender, it would be an easy quilt.
Try Warm Wishes pattern

I love the 3 dudes quilt pattern with Jelly Rolls
I just finished a disappearing four patch. Loved the results and much quicker that I thought it would be. I made 12" blocks (finished) and a 1.5 in inner border and a 3 inch outer border and diagonal quilting and some stitch in the ditch and send it off.
I too just found out my niece , who has been trying to have a baby for 4 years is adopting a baby girl. I just saw this disappearing 16 patch on fav quilts a few minutes ago. http://www.favequilts.com/Block-Patt...VhKWfCWfZsX.32 . Hope the link works. I am debating between the 16 patch and the Merry go round and the 3 dudes pattern. I had just decided I was going to play in my sewing room all day today on another project. I guess my plans have changed.

Check out Jenny Doan's ( missouri star quilt co.) pinwheel quilt on UTube....REALLY fast using 2 charm packs, one solid, one print
The 16 patch sound really interesting. I get this newsletter everyday and missed this one. Thanks for sharing meanmom
Why not something simple like a solid square (focus fabric) alternated with four patches (2 coordinating/contrasting fabrics). or snowballs alternating with a 9-patch.

I especially liked her blog and saw so many patterns I would like to try. Thanks for posting this one. |
Using the technique "Less Than Traditional" is easy and amazing. Here is a video about it. There are special templates that make the quilt faster to put together but you certainly do not need them. http://www.quiltershaven.net/
It has a complicated cathedral window look and has so many various ways to make the same technique look different - it is quilt as you go and ends up with a sculpted boarder. With soft baby pastel colors - you have it! |
Why would you need to give a present that looks like it took a long time when you were only invited 5 days ago? Just make something nice and go from there. Have a good time. Hope your quilt is acceptable. :)
Easy would be jenny's self binding quilt, focus on quilting.

My go -to baby quilt is alternating 9-patch blocks with squares of the focus fabric, or making snowball blocks alternating with 9-patch blocks. Years ago I attended a lecture by Mary Ellen Hopkins who stressed making simple blocks, but with gorgeous fabrics, makes for great quilts. To me, fabric makes the quilt, especially a baby quilt. I don't know if it helps or not, but sometimes simple is better.
Why not do a jelly roll quilt. I don't think they come any faster.
I second the vote on wonky stars. So easy and yes, a scrap buster.
10 minute block is just about as fast as you can get.
Wonderful ideas from all of you ladies! I'm needing a baby quilt also. Thanks!
The Super Sized 9-Patch is a great way to quickly get 3 baby quilt tops using 3 yards of fabric. They are super cute, especially if you add a little applique.

Carpenter Star made with charm squares -- with borders, its the perfect size for a baby quilt. I've got 5 made up for boys and girls, ready to gift. I put minky on the back of a couple, used flannel inside as batting, and its simple quilting. Fast and very pretty when done - looks complicated and its not.
Ditto what lynnie stated! you could also make a cute "Crazy Baby Quilt" with sashing and tie it.
Another one I've done is a QAYG - I put the backing right side down, a layer of white flannel on top, and then sew rows of baby-ish fabrics in simple rows from one side to the other. I use strips of 2.5 inch fabrics, and really mix it up. Once you get to the other end, its already quilted, and you just have to put on a simple binding or prairie points if you want to get fancy. Very, very fast.
