I have been quilting for over 30 years and still SQUARE UP my blocks as I go. Saves a lot of headaches and ripping out.

I've learned that as much as I hate pins, they are you're friend! The more, the better!

Fortyniner, sorry you had troubles with triangles fitting. Did you finish the Quilt and if so are you pleased with it? I am afraid to trim anything for fear of having trouble down the road. Thank you for the link.

BDawn, thanks for asking. I haven't finished the top, but at least my triangles fit. I found the Perfect Piecing book on line a few days ago and have it on order, too. I have a book from Better Homes and Gardens called the Complete Guide to Quilting that has helped a lot. I have learned so much from this Board, though. I read it every day. I love being able to search the archived conversations, too.
This is a beautiful quilt pattern. I have to put it on my ever-growing bucket list. Good luck with it. I hope you post it when you finish.
I finally found a product that helps with matching seams too, if you have that problem. Have you tried Fons and Porters glue stick? It goes on purple, fits nicely in the seam allowance and dries quickly, so I can sew almost immediately- no ironing first. And it doesn't seem to gum up on the iron.

I plan to post pics when I finish the quilt . I will have my son take a look and see why I can't post pics it keeps saying failure to upload.

As another newbie, I have to ask, what is the difference between ironing and pressing a seam? I'm thinking I probably do this already and just didn't know there were two ways of saying it.

Please take note I am new to quilting but this is how I understand ironing verse pressing a seam
Ironing tells me to iron fabric to smooth out wrinkles, pressing seams means after you sew seam you press either open or towards the dark side of the fabric. When I press I am careful not to stretch fabric by making circles or going back and forth on fabric but gently steam press it. Enjoy quilting and hopefully someone else on this board can give their thoughts

You are correct about pressing, and one last thought, press the piece first flat with both layers together to set the stitches, THEN flip the seam toward the dark side, UNLESS you are going to have problems nesting up seams later, this is why it is a good practice to make a test block first and see how the seams are going to go together best. It took me a long time to learn this lesson, but it is worth the time and fabric as it often uncovers other isues as well.

Thank you paperprincess it worked..... as you can see I was missing the end pieces. The strips are pinned right now on a badly stain rag but it works better visual with it hanging although it is crooked. I have not attached rows yet except one row and I removed that row.

Your quilt looks fabulous! Looks like everthing is going to fit perfectly. Congrats on your 2nd quilt.

So glad about the successful pix! they probably were too large before.
One additional comment. On all hexagonal quilts you have the issue of those 2 edges not being straight. You have at least 3 options:
1) leave them as zig zags.
2) cut and piece end blocks (note that these are not half blocks! they need to be a bit larger to accomodate the seam allowance)
3) piece it up just as you have it, when you are done, cut the partial triangles off with a ruler and rotary cutter. Make sure that you add the seam allowance when you cut.

This thread is why I enjoy the board so much. BDawn came to the board with a question. Several quilters chimed in and helped. In reading BDawn question and the answers, I was helped too. I have ordered the piecing book. My swap partners will reap the benifits. Thanks all.
