I enjoy hand appliqueing and handquilting the most -- don't like cutting, machine sewing, layering, basting -- really enjoy the finished product the most!

Hope everyone enjoyed the Moose pictures I posted yesterday. what an experience that was. will never see that again. Anyone who didn't see them check out MOOSE AND TWINS dated 8/19/2011.

I would love to know how to do it this way instead of attaching it to the front and having to hand stitch it to the back...working on my first paper pieced quilt top

mzmama 08-21-2011 09:24 AM

I can not think of one thing I don't like about quilting, maybe keeping the sewing room neat, just can't do that.

ufoqueen 08-21-2011 09:40 AM

Making the quilt sanwich, get it wonky every time. Thinking about trying the spray basting on the wall method.

grannypat7925 08-21-2011 09:47 AM

Sandwiching is the hardest for me becuz of a bad shoulder. The rest I can handle.

DonnaB 08-21-2011 10:01 AM

I really enjoy sewing the binding, it's relaxing by the boob tube, and I know I am almost done with my quilt.

loo13 08-21-2011 10:03 AM

I to am too old to crawl around on the floor sandwiching a quilt; I found a solution to that problem. Some libraries will let you use their meeting rooms. Free of charge. They have large tables to use. How much easier that makes the job.

MarilynLouise 08-21-2011 10:09 AM

For me the worst part is making the backing!

karenpatrick 08-21-2011 10:14 AM

I hate the sandwiching as I'm 65 with a bad back and I have to do it on the floor if it's a quilt of any size. It takes me a long time as I have to stop and rest often. Sometimes it will take a few days to get it done and I have to keep the dogs out of the room ore they will turn it into new dog beds.

Phannie1 08-21-2011 10:16 AM

I think cutting would be my most dread in quilting. I get excited when I get to the binding. That means it's almost done. I do not like most patterns and colors choices there are in charms or jelly rolls.

I have a quilt that I need to cut for about 3 months now.

Even then, I still couldn't get it smooth on the back, so I went back to the pinning.

I hope this helps!

me too... the floor is the only place I have big enough and it looks like I will have to use the one at the library (I am a volunteer) so I can tape the backing down. at 76 the crawling around on a hard floor is no fun...

running1 08-21-2011 10:46 AM

housework... sorry??? I love everything about quilting... some more than others, of course, but I just love it all....

Hate that first cut of fabric.
I want to jump into your avatar and hug that CAT!!

ShabbyTabby 08-21-2011 11:03 AM

I guess the cutting is and sandwiching...I'm old, tired, retired and seem to have a love affair with "Arthur" (arthritis)so standing to cut is not fun and there is no way in this world I can crawl on the floor to pin. Usually I recruit my DD or GDD to do that which means when I start a new project, they disappear ! I just bought some spray baste and am going to give that a try. Hopefully it will solve at least one problem for me...

jojosnana 08-21-2011 11:26 AM

I love binding because it means the quilt is done. I can sit back and smile........I guess I have always like hand sewing so binding is relaxing for me. Now, sandwiching - not so much.

Quilting Angel 08-21-2011 11:31 AM

I use to hate binding to because I just couldn't figure out how to end it and it never turned out right. Now that I've figured it out, I actually love doing binding. I hate doing the basting. Love everything else.

Check the link that I sent 5 posts before yours. This method is so much easier!

Ditto! I do not like sandwiching, either.

try Sharon Schamber's method of basting & layering. I did & find it so much easier & faster. and no pins to take out. her you-tube video explains it really well. 14yr GD did it for her
first quilting ever--no puckers at all. used serpentine stitch.
you just have to think of where your quilting lines are going
to go so not as many basting stitches are in your way. but--if
they are, a quick snip & they are out of your way. I just did
3 quilts that have been sitting waiting for the quilting.

CAS49OR 08-21-2011 12:34 PM

Matching up corners -- or trying to get the backing to lay flat when making a sandwich. I can't see under there! LOL

kathyd 08-21-2011 02:26 PM

My least favorite part is putting the quilt in the frame. It is awkward to pin all the layers to the leaders and enders.
I don't mind the binding, as others have said when that is done the quilt is FINISHED. And besides, for me hand work is relaxing!

I hate marking a quilt design. I've tried everything, I'm just not good at it and never happy with the results.

Grinster 08-21-2011 02:37 PM

Binding by hand. I don't like the way my hand stitching looks and I fear it will pull out or break. I have been machine quilting the binding and I don't think they look too bad. I usually use a pattern stitch from my machine. I used to hate where the binding comes together but there is a video on Utube that makes it a piece of cake.

MargeD 08-21-2011 03:28 PM

I don't especially like sandwiching the quilt. I love making the tops, and I like machine quilting them, but there's just something about having to put the three layers together, that makes me procrastinate doing that part of the quilt. Part of it may be that I don't really have a lot of space to spread the quilt out in the apt., as I need to sit to do this because of my back problems. There - now I have "gritched" about what I hate doing in a craft that I dearly love and don't really want to do anything else.

I used to hate the sandwitching part just as much as binding... then came spray basting!

Lori - you read my mind. This is exactly how I feel! I found a tute for binding that I can easily follow, so, I'm not as bad with the binding now. Still not my favorite part. LOVE spray basting! It works on both large and small projects.

I like making blocks but suffer a lot of pain trying to get the dang things together. I'm not the fussy exacting personality type who thrives on perfection. Every time I say "I wish I were more exacting...," I remember all the qualities I have because I am not exacting. I can do other things and am happy I can!!! Now, back to those dang blocks.....

Normacharlie 08-21-2011 04:04 PM

I'm with you, I love the quilting, hate the binding, too!

ghquilter53 08-21-2011 04:19 PM

You might want to try machine binding like Pat Sloan. Check out her website. I am sure she would have some instructions. Or maybe UTube. NQA certified judges accept machine binding now. Saves a ton of time and is more practical for kids quilts especially.

ShortRound 08-21-2011 04:35 PM

I don't mind binding since I started gluing it with a glue stick and ironing it down. No pins to contend with!

stoppain 08-21-2011 04:59 PM

I hate the last few inches of binding, I never get it right

quiltingb1 08-21-2011 05:23 PM

I hate the cutting out part. Would rather be sewing. Also never liked the sandwiching part either but now mostly try to use the spray and now don't mind it as much.

Farm Quilter 08-21-2011 05:46 PM

I HATE hand sewing the binding! Why can't I find someone who loves to do hand work, and does it well, to swap for custom quilting on my LA???

You guys are sooooooo funny!!!

katyquilter 08-21-2011 05:55 PM

I used to put off binding, but now I can't wait to finish the binding because that means I've finished another project!!!

jillnjo 08-21-2011 05:58 PM

Funny, I enjoy binding, but I don't care for sandwiching or squaring up (I just want it to be square, Thank you!).

debbieumphress 08-21-2011 06:02 PM

I hate squaring up a quilt...so I am careful as I go so it's easier. I also hate removing the paper off paper piecing. Wow, lot's of little pieces come off.:):)

penski 08-21-2011 06:22 PM

i also hate doing the binding !!! but i keep thinking the more i do them the more i will enjoy doing them ! but that hasnt happened yet

gramajo 08-21-2011 06:33 PM

I have to put the binding on by machine because I have RA & can't hand sew. I know how to do it, but I can only work a short time before I start hurting. After enjoying most of the rest of the process of quilt-making, I just get frustrated because this is so difficult for me.

Exactly how do you do this? Glue a small area, iron it, glue some more, iron? I bought a glue stick thinking about using it, but wasn't sure how to do it, so I went back to pinning & cussing about the danged binding.
