the binding on my quilts. You'd think I wouldn't mind 'cause it means the quilt is finished. I have been procrastinating for 2 days (I've done a lot of little things I felt needed doing so have accomplished something), but I decided I have to get it done today. Of course it has to be done in small steps. Strips are cut, sewn & pressed but I had to reward myself for getting that far by coming on this board to whine about the binding & check out all your messages

What part of quilting do you not like doing?

OK I've been on here long enough! Back to that blankety-blank binding.

bjeriann 08-20-2011 10:43 AM

Paying the bill at the LQS. Eveything else I love.

Bluelady 08-20-2011 10:44 AM

Binding. I have about six quilted quilts waiting for me to do the binding...

butterflies5518 08-20-2011 10:45 AM

Squaring up the quilt - just now comfortable trimming any of it, needless to say mine are only perfect when the LA does them, otherwise...wonky!!

ptquilts 08-20-2011 10:46 AM

I love binding or any kind of hand work.

caliquocat 08-20-2011 10:54 AM

I enjoy the handwork involved in binding. I hate "sandwiching" & pinning. I'm too old to crawl around on the floor!!

gale 08-20-2011 10:58 AM

I hate sandwiching. A lot.

Lori S 08-20-2011 10:59 AM

BINDING!.. all the fun and creative stuff is done by the time I get to the binding. No more creative anticipation... just that last step binding.... I know what its going to look like , what the quilting will look like .... Binding is just boring.
I used to hate the sandwitching part just as much as binding... then came spray basting!

Me too...so where was I this morning? The LQS..with my debit card!

lileth1374 08-20-2011 11:02 AM

I love everything about quilting but the binding. When I start to bind a quilt, everybody (including the cats) leave the house LOL!!!!!

That used to be me until I discovered spray basting on this board. I will never pin again! I use my bed and an old sheet to protect from overspray. So easy and fast. I can have a lap sized quilt ready to FMQ in about 10 minutes.

What I really hate to do is all the cutting.

nance-ell 08-20-2011 11:13 AM

I hate preparing the fabric.... washing, pressing, etc... I want to go straight to the cutting board! Same with binding... I don't mind attaching the binding, but I hate getting it ready!

orangeroom 08-20-2011 11:16 AM

I feel your pain about the binding. I decided a long time ago that after I had all the materials cut for the top and backing, I'd cut, sew, iron and store the binding material. It's worked well as I'm still in that 'go, go, go mentality!' Then when I come home from quilting the layers I sit down that day and machine sew on the binding. I look forward to hand sewing on the back side of the binding while watching tv.

I despise having to use the seem ripper when I've messed up and sewn something wrong.

amyjo 08-20-2011 11:31 AM

I guess I don't bind, because I bring it up from the backing fabric and fold over pin and then stitch it down with the machine. goes really fast that way. I also tie mh quilts as the people I sell to, don't want them flatten. want them puffy and cuddly. same with my baby quilts. which reminds me -- better get off my hinny and get started cutting for baby quilts. Hope everyone enjoyed the Moose pictures I posted yesterday. what an experience that was. will never see that again. Anyone who didn't see them check out MOOSE AND TWINS dated 8/19/2011.

I can relate! I've had a tablerunner under my needle for a couple weeks, binding half sewn on...

DogHouseMom 08-20-2011 11:39 AM

I hate any/all needle hand work - for me that's basting and attaching the binding to the back. Obviously I don't do needle turn applique, which unfortunately rules out a whole genre of quilts that I love to look at. Sit me down with a needle and thread and I'm a miserable woman.

sewmary 08-20-2011 11:55 AM

I LOVE binding. I like the hand work. It is what my hands can still do! No more applique because of RA and fibro.

I HATE HATE HATE sandwiching. Even with the spray.

nyelphaba 08-20-2011 12:03 PM

I like making the binding, I like hand sewing it to the back of the quilt, I really dislike attaching the binding to the front of the quilt.

ube quilting 08-20-2011 12:04 PM

my least liked part of the process is the cutting but only becuase of arthritis in my hands. I love to do binding. It's the part where I slow down and enjoy feeling and looking at the fabrics and saying to myself, "How pretty! How pretty!

Me too. I just don't have a good place to do it, for one thing.

I don't mind binding anymore. During the last step of sewing it down to the back by hand, I at least come out of my "cat cave" and can sit and watch TV with my DH. I've tried out several techniques of using the machine to do all the binding, but have not been happy with any of them. So, I still attach to the front by machine and then finish off by hand. It's the only thing I do by hand.

SparkMonkey 08-20-2011 12:38 PM

Um.... I don't much like piecing. Specifically when it gets to the point where blocks are done, and it's time to do sashing/borders. I don't have the best sewing space for handling large expanses of fabric, so it can be frustrating, and the chance of catching a fold under the presser foot or rolling my chair over the quilt top is always a concern.

I love handwork of all kinds, and I've never tried hand-piecing a top. I think that will be on my radar in the near future. That, and wholecloths. ;)

Holice 08-20-2011 12:51 PM

Watch the segment I did for QuiltersTV. Am told it gives good and easy directions.

the casual quilter 08-20-2011 12:54 PM

You said it best - the blankety-blank binding!

collady 08-20-2011 12:59 PM

I save the binding to do at times when I don't feel up to climbing the stairs. I find that it is a positive thing then. I am finishing quilts. I also do my binding while riding in the car. It is better to do that in the winter than the summer though!

#1piecemaker 08-20-2011 01:02 PM

I don't mind doing the binding. It means that I have another one finished and also, it is something different!!

Snorky Lvs2Quilt 08-20-2011 01:25 PM

I too do not like doing binding. By the time I get to it I am already cutting out and moving on to my next project. I have a lot of UFOs that just need binding. My BFF just told me today that her 90 year old mother said she would be happy to do all my handwork......yipppeeee!!! I told her I wouldn't think of her doing it without my paying her but she wouldn't hear of it. I know she loves candy so I may drop off my projects with bags of her fav candy as payment. We both win!

Wow, that is amazing....I could have written this comment...why do I ever think I have a unique plan in my head when there are thousands of you out there doing it the same way!! But it does make me smile to see I am in good company. Yeah, having that binding ready to go (I even have mine wound up on my toilet paper necklace) makes a big difference. and yes, the back side of a binding takes me one to two movies, depending on the size of the quilt.
Just do it!! you know you're so happy when your finished sewing it to the front!!

quiltingme 08-20-2011 03:45 PM

I have only done the binding a couple of times. It is just so easy to have it done by my local LAQ. But, after what I paid this last trip, I might have to start doing the binding myself to keep the cost down a bit.

snipforfun 08-20-2011 04:00 PM

I dread sandwiching and pinning. I mostly "quilt by check" unless it is a small project. I loce doing binding since I discovered how to do the glue method.

amma 08-20-2011 05:31 PM

Binding was mine, until I decided that machine sewing them on was perfectly okay with me :D:D:D

lalaland 08-20-2011 05:48 PM

I hate doing binding, this is the technique I use to bind my quilts.

dublb 08-20-2011 08:39 PM

I hate pressing yards & yards of fabric! One yard or smaller is ok but any larger is just frustrating. I do like to prewash all of my fabric 'cause I've had problems with uneven shrinkage & bleeding. Recently I've found a cleaners that will wash, starch, square-up, & press my yardage!!! At about $10 per 3 yrds!!! Hooray!

Rose L 08-20-2011 08:49 PM

I greatly dislike frogging and picking threads but it happens on occasion. You have to take the good with the bad and the rest of quilting is very very good ;)

kiffie2413 08-20-2011 08:57 PM

well, fmq...until I can find my groove...I keep just going back to hand quilting...but, I am going to keep at it..have a lot of quilts waiting to be quilted....

slk350 08-20-2011 09:00 PM

I really like sewing on the binding. I don't like washing and ironing all the fabric for the quilt.

LLWinston44 08-20-2011 09:30 PM

I hate the sandwhiching a lot. It hurts my bad hip and challenges my weak muscles. Also really hate drawing the quilting lines (thus far that's the only quilting I've been able to achieve), but I enjoy the binding, only I forget until I'm doing it. Lol

QM 08-20-2011 11:06 PM

I am not fond of binding or any form of ironing, or for that matter, pin basting. For baby quilts, I tend to use a birthing method (envelope) and bypass the binding. I have asthma and can't spray baste. I don't really hate any of it. I just set up proceedures so that I don't ruin myself in the process. Now that my DH set up a new sewing area for me, clean up isn't too bad either.
