Identify this quilt?

Can anyone provide the pattern name for this handsome design? (I think it would look good in blocks with 10, rather than 5, strips also.)

Don't know name of pattern but I do like it.

PaperPrincess 10-25-2015 06:35 AM

Looks like a rail fence set on point. If you up the number of strips, you will have to go with an odd number to keep the colored print on the outside, so instead of 10 you would go with 9 or 11. Depending on the width of the strips, you'd need to cut the block a lot larger and you may loose the overall effect.

Tartan 10-25-2015 06:53 AM

It looks similar to Bonnie Hunter's Basket Weave Strings quilt. She uses uneven strips for hers but you could use measured strips. You can find her Free Pattern on her site www.quiltville.blogspot.ca

Manalto 10-25-2015 06:55 AM

Good point about the odd number of pieces. On point, it has a distinct basket-weave look. I thought that effect might be enhanced by having blocks the same size but with skinnier strips (9 of them, for example).

ETA: Tartan posted at the same time. Thanks for the link.

QuiltnNan 10-25-2015 07:23 AM

here's a link to Bonnie's. the OP quilt is simply 5 strips alternating white and color. great quilt

Well this was fun! :)

Five strips:

Nine strips:

Nine strips, multiple colors: (QOV, anyone?)

Manalto 10-25-2015 07:35 AM

How about seven strips, two colors, and reversing the order of the strips when you reverse direction? In other words, in the yellow and white version, the outside bars would be white for the blocks that tip left and yellow for the ones that tip right. I think it would enhance the basket-weave effect.

Ooh more fun!

How about a boy quilt?

This one is more masculine and adult

If you're into 2-color quilts....

Or neutrals....

How about a sports theme? Go Seahawks!!! lol

You mean like this?

Hmmm. Let's try it in the 5-strip version.

I dunno, I don't think it adds much. What do you think?

Kitsie 10-25-2015 08:13 AM

The way I sew strips together?? Think I'll just use striped fabric!! :D

Yes I also like the alternate color strips. Another idea to add to the ever growing list. :). Thanks

I agree. It loses the basket weave effect with the color reversal. It's strongest in the two-color brick-red one you did above.

I wonder if contrast matters?

How are you doing these sketches, Peckish? What fun.

PaperPrincess 10-25-2015 08:50 AM

Really like the 9 strip neutral. I'm thinking the strips would finish at 1" (for a 9" block), 6 blocks on point across gives you a quilt that's roughly 75 inches.... Hmmmm.

JustAbitCrazy 10-25-2015 09:00 AM

Rail Fence is the block name.

Onebyone 10-25-2015 09:06 AM

The quilt in the first post looks like one big piece of fabric that has been quilted. A lot of work to make it look that way.

As if people who make quilts have chosen the easy way.

In my opinion, contrast matters on ALL quilts. I think it's one of the most important elements.

One of the first alternate versions I tried was pastels - it didn't work very well.

Oh, and I'm using EQ7. LOVE it.

Manalto 10-25-2015 09:19 AM

I meant to say that I wondered if contrast matters in achieving the basket-weave effect. It seems to.

ManiacQuilter2 10-25-2015 09:53 AM

I am sure there is a name for this quilt but can't find it. Peggi sure gave a lot of layouts with this pattern. EQ makes it so easy to change colors on a quilt design.

sewingsuz 10-25-2015 10:19 AM

Very nice!

wishfulthinking 10-25-2015 10:30 AM

I keep thinkingit would be interesting to see pinwheels in the corners where the blocks meet.

Veinurse 10-25-2015 12:50 PM

All of you are too much fun!

ArlaJo 10-25-2015 03:13 PM

What was the width of the strips Peckish? I have 7 just too dumb to figure out how to use it.

Peckish 10-25-2015 08:24 PM

I estimated the strips in the original photo to be about 1" wide, assuming the binding was a standard quarter-inch wide.

You mean like this? pinwheel rail fence

Or this? https://www.pinterest.com/pin/20195898303756103/

Teddybear Lady 10-25-2015 10:17 PM

Peggi, I like your variations of colors and number of strips.

mom-6 10-26-2015 02:04 AM

Peckish - I like the alternate light out - dark out in the many strips version, but not so much in the fewer strips version.
Thanks for the visual on the many possible ways it can be done!

Manalto 10-26-2015 02:22 AM

I've decided to forget about the basket-weave effect, and go with this design:
http://www.quilterscache.com/images3...srailfence.jpg

If I make the strips 3" wide and lengthen the quilt by two rows (6 wide, 8 long) with borders 3", 8" and 5 1/2", finished dimensions will be 75" x 90". How can I estimate fabric requirement? Is there a formula?

Colors (to harmonize with house's interior) will be pale olive ("pinwheel" centers), oatmeal, and white/cream. Olive back and binding. Hoping to find good batiks in these colors because the recipient is not a candidate for a traditional, old-fashioned quilt. It will be a housewarming gift for my cousin's new beach house.

Sassylass 10-26-2015 03:15 AM

Thank you Peggy, what a lot of colour ways to make this quilt!!!

Skhf 10-26-2015 04:11 AM

The white strips seem wider than the yellow. Is this just an optical illusion?

Charleen DiSante 10-26-2015 04:30 AM

Peggi, you are certainly having fun designing all the different variations. Is that a program?

Manalto 10-26-2015 05:36 AM

It's called Electric Quilt 7 (EQ7) and the block is called 'Rail Fence."

There's no way for me to find out the answer, unfortunately. Good observation!

Maureen 10-26-2015 06:35 AM

omg these all look great. So many variations some of them actually move, or is it my eyes?

I hope your eyes move or your neck is going to get really tired.

DivaDee 10-26-2015 08:27 AM

You guys really need to stop putting links to other sites in your messages. I spend waaaaaay too much time following links from one blog to another blog to another blog, well you get the idea. I usually can't remember where I started and them it, "oh, I was on QB" and then I go to the next post that has a link and off I go again.

Manalto 10-26-2015 08:35 AM

Glad you found your way back. Some never do, you know.

maxnme01 10-26-2015 09:59 AM

OMG you guys are amazing. Thanks puckish for the layouts.

maxnme01 10-26-2015 10:00 AM

Diva Dee you have read my mind. It's like a new shiny object. Gotta go look see! LOL
