If you fall in love with a fabric...

Would you buy it even if you had no idea how to use it? I'm obsessed with the Posy line and am dying to make something with it. But it's definitely fabric for little girl quilts and I'm already halfway done making the quilts for my little girls (and have at least three more projects in line with fabric already picked out. Everyone I know is done having babies by now (and we're nowhere close to grandbabies). If I bought the fabric, it would honestly be with no project and no recipient in mind, which seems wasteful. But it's so lovely that I have an almost physical craving for it. WWYD?

Knitette 04-23-2013 04:10 AM

Buy it - if you're thinking about it enough to be writing about on here, it says a lot.

Life's too short - you'll regret it if you don't.

ka9sdn 04-23-2013 04:12 AM

Buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You never know when some little girls comes along that may need it badly Maybe that "little girl" may even be yourself. Make yourself a neat little quilt just to have.

Quilter 65 04-23-2013 04:12 AM

Get it. The perfect project will suddenly appear and you'll be prepared.

orangeroom 04-23-2013 04:15 AM

I'd buy it! I've been known to do that. I once bought a whole bolt (16 yards) because I absolutely LOVED it. I'm still able to use it too. Still absolutely LOVE it too! I've not bought material in the past and regretted it. I had moments when I was looking in my stash for that perfect material and I remembered where I saw it and it was in the shop. Where it still was. I've learned. Good luck with your decision. If you can afford it, buy it. If not, then it's not worth the price.

AlienQuilter 04-23-2013 04:15 AM

You could buy a couple of charm packs and save them for later.

And what's wrong with making this for you?

http://missouriquiltco.com/shop/browse?q=posy

Jenny also has several tute's for using charm packs.

And buying the charm packs shouldn't break the bank.

Boston1954 04-23-2013 04:21 AM

87% of the fabric that I buy falls into this category. I say get as much as you want. If I have no idea what it will be for, I get at least two yards. If I do what it will be used in, I get more.

YUP! Most of my stash is acquired that way. Last year I admired the "Ruby" line by Timeless Treasures in the Hancocks of Paducah catalog. I rarely buy fabric lines but I really, really liked that one. But I was strong and resisted. Week before last I got an email for a two day sale from Hancocks. An extra 30% off everything, even sale stuff. So I hopped on line to do some browsing and guess what was on sale? Yup, and yup. Been there, done that and got the fabric to prove it and it was like Christmas when I came home to that box on my doorstep last week.

If you have the funds, buy it and get several yards.

alisonquilts 04-23-2013 04:37 AM

I agree with all of the above posts, and especially with Boston1954 and felinefanatic - get at least 2 yards of whatever pieces you like, so that you will have flexibility when you do come to use it. Nothing quite like being 3 inches short of your focus fabric in the perfect pattern...three years after the fabric pattern was retired!

When I worked at Joann Fabrics it happened ALL THE TIME! We would get a new gorgeous print in and someone would buy the whole bolt.

QuiltnNan 04-23-2013 04:44 AM

there have been so many posts on here asking to find fabric that is out of print/stock. i say buy it and buy plenty!

MartiMorga 04-23-2013 04:46 AM

I am like you - I am always afraid that I will spend the big bucks for the material and have no use. I still haven't gotten to the point where I can buy 2-3 yards of a material for no reason. I think I will be the kind of quilter who buys as she needs. Keeping the stash to one closet.

berryberry 04-23-2013 05:41 AM

I have fabric that at the time I had no planned project for. Although it's a kid's fabric, I think it's the perfect kid's fabric. I have 2 yards of all the different pieces of the Dr. Seuss fabric.

You will come across a pattern that fabric just fits and if you don't purchase the fabric to have on hand, it will be your "should have" quilt. Nothing else will measure up and will be a substitute.

Have you ever had a baby quilt of your own? Make yourself, your "little girl self", a quilt, label it as such and enjoy every moment under it! We ALL have a part of ourselves that has never grown up.:)

Teeler 04-23-2013 08:11 AM

Def get it. The project will "materialize" at some point.
Have you considered things like Beach bags or other tote-type bags or a bureau-topper or the birthday parties that your little girls will inevitably be invited to and need a gift...or, or :)
Have fun!

rebeljane 04-23-2013 08:22 AM

Go for it, then there are no regrets later.

0tis 04-23-2013 08:31 AM

I would buy it - I have several collections that I fell in love with - I love having them and when I find the perfect pattern I use them in the meantime I still love to look at them.

Butterscotch Daisy 04-23-2013 08:38 AM

If you love it and it won't break the budget, BUY IT ! That is one of the most common ways I am building 'My Stash". I take the advice of every one and get at least 2 yards so I will have enough for a project. Every single piece of fabric I have has 'spoken' to me at the time of purchase.

grammysharon 04-23-2013 09:25 AM

If I fall in love with a fabric, I probably buy 2 or 3 yards of it and come up with a pattern to best show it off!!!!

Jingle 04-23-2013 09:43 AM

When I bought most of my stash I had no idea what I would do with it. I knew I wanted to make lots of quilts and if I live long enough I bet I will use it in quilts.
If I wanted that bad I would buy several yards. Some pattern will come to mind sooner or latter. It would be a shame not to have enough to make it with.

NikkiLu 04-23-2013 09:50 AM

I have been more sorry for the things that I have not bought than the things that I did buy. HTH

I agree. Buy it if you can.

quilter1943 04-23-2013 01:47 PM

I can show you a closet full of fabric for which I had no specific use when I bought it. I do use it, wouldn't buy fabric any other way. Always gives me something else to shop for also -- fabric to go with the fabric for which I had no specific use!!! I just love it all.

grandjan 04-23-2013 01:53 PM

I'd say buy it. Heaven knows I've done it enough. Just be sure you get enough to do something with. My rule of thumb for fabric I really love is three yards. If it calls you that way, though, you should get it even if you just sit around and admire it!

trolleystation 04-23-2013 04:28 PM

How about making a wallhanging for yourself and you can be the 'little girl'?

MadQuilter 04-23-2013 04:34 PM

That's why I have a room full of stash. Absolutely would I buy it. Word of warning - it can get out of hand and eventually, you may want to actually use some of those fabrics. lol

Janice McC 04-23-2013 04:44 PM

LOL! This is exactly what I was thinking about today when I found a vintage pink and white quilt for sale online. I thought it was lovely and exactly what I'd have liked as a little girl - and still do! I'm going to a LQS tomorrow "just to look" at fabrics. Apparently there's still a little girl in me even though I'm the other side of 50!

i guess i am the dissenter here. i would be madly looking for a pattern or trying to come up with a specific idea for the fabric before buying it. there are several fabric lines that i look at all the time, but cant bring myself to spend the money until i at least have a plan. part of me would love to just stash, but i just dont do it

meldmac 04-23-2013 05:12 PM

I woul buy it but then again I have no willpower.

Nammie to 7 04-23-2013 05:14 PM

I saw a quilt kit in Houston that I fell in love with - looked at it for 6 days - when I decided to buy it they were out of stock. Ended up calling that shop a month later and ordered it then. I never stopped wanting that kit and am so happy I bought it. It has all been washed and ironed and is waiting for me to cut into it. Buy it - you are worth it.

Dolphyngyrl 04-23-2013 06:58 PM

Yes because when you decide you want it for a project it will be gone, ask me how I know. it is so hard to find discontinued fabric without paying an arm and a leg

cricket_iscute 04-23-2013 09:09 PM

Buy it! I bought a whole bolt of a fabric I totally loved and then bought coordinates for it. I'm now happily making quilts from that fabric. I predict that you will regret it if you don't buy it and you won't regret it if you do buy it.

DOTTYMO 04-23-2013 11:13 PM

Why not make a quilt for yourself with your daughters name on.

Debbie C 04-24-2013 02:59 AM

Buy what you will need to make what you want with it. You may not get to it right away, but when you eventually decide to do that particular project, the fabric will probably no longer be available!! Nothing worse that walking away now and not finding it later on.

sew_itnow 04-24-2013 03:34 AM

You could always get it and make little girl quilts for way down the line grandchild. Or just to have on hand if the need arises for a little girl quilt. Also you could get it to just have it for future use. Go for it and enjoy looking at it until you decide to use it.

citruscountyquilter 04-24-2013 03:35 AM

I rarely buy collections but rather buy individual fabrics. If something speaks to me I get it for my stash and it is rare that I don't find a use for it in multiple projects. I don't think that most of the fabric in the collection mentioned looks juvenile so not having a little girl in mind wouldn't stop me from buying something I loved. If you can afford it and really love it get it. You will find something to use it in and in the meantime you can love looking at it.

patchsamkim 04-24-2013 03:49 AM

Most of the time when I shop for fabric, I buy it because I like it....at least I used to. I have so much fabric now, that I am making myself use it and pretty much only shop for borders, or sashings or backings. If I want to shop otherwise, I try to have a plan. Or at least know that it will go with something I already have.

sewmerry 04-24-2013 03:52 AM

The response on your question tells me there are some lovely stashes out there . Buy it or you will start losing sleep over it and it might even make you ill. Buy it and enjoy the pleasure of deciding which something to make that is worthy enough to use that piece!!

jmoore 04-24-2013 04:06 AM

Go for it... I purchased some whimsical charm squares online because I fell in love with them and I just used them in a table runner. I'm sure you'll find a great project for the Posey somewhere along the way.

Daisy Dew 04-24-2013 04:22 AM

A few days ago a member shared her quilt "Welcome Spring" free pattern from Moda Bake Shop, she did a slight variation - I just love it. Now, after reading about your infatuation with Posy Fabric I see a connection! Go buy it for pete's sake before it's all gone!
Happy piecing and peace
