I inhereted a Bernina 930 from my DMIL. Still trying to locate the power cord, but I'm told it's around. Sure hope so, from what I can tell, they are discontinued.
My question: Would you invest the money to have this machine looked at, cleaned, etc., and use it? I have a great little Brother LB6770 embroidery machine that's been great but I can tell the Berninia is much more solid. Let me know your thoughts, I need to purchase a walking foot, 1/4"foot, bobbins, etc. Thanks! |
I would think it is worth it. But you need the cord for that.
The Bernina 930 was one of the last all metal machines Bernina made. It's a workhorse machine. If you can locate the power cord I'd say yes get it looked at by a Bernina dealer. That machine is still in major demand & if in good condition worth somewhere in the area of $1000.00. I've had mine since I bought it new in 1983. Only thing it have had to have replaced/fixed were the feed dogs. I wore them off I used it so much.
Is it worth it? Yes.
Power cords are available on-line, so I would say a most definite yes. One of the nice things about these machines is that you can get feet to do anything you can possibly think of.
Yes....My Mom has her 930 and it is better than my 1030....
Keep looking for the cord...a replace ment is going to cost at least $100. |
Yes, definately worth it.
I think it would be worth it too :D:D:D
Definitely yes it's worth it. I bought my 930 in about 1978 and it has been a workhorse. It has never had to have anything done to it. It just like a timex, takes a licking and keeps on ticking. They are wonderful machines only thing is they weigh a ton so you won't want to carry them around much.LOL

I inherited my mom's 930 which she loved. When she bought that one, I inherited her 630 or 730, can't remember which. I traded that one in after 23 years and still got $600 to put toward the Viking I bought. I will not trade the 930 as she said it was too good to replace! It is technically my daughter's now, but... anyway, get it serviced, you will love it.
Congratulations! You got a great machine.
Absolutely worth it! However, a replacement cord can be expensive.
Very much worth the expense of getting it serviced and cord replaced. "Nothing sews like a Bernina"
Thanks, everyone! I really hope we find the cord because the one for the 930 has been discontinued. I'm going to find that cord before I get her serviced...
Call some of the repair shops to see if they have a cord for it.
No! It's a piece of junk!! Send it to me quickly before it contaminates your house. Why, I'll even pay the shipping!
*wink* It is the best machine you will ever own! |
LOL, Kso.

Hi,
I am so happy for you. The 930 is a great solid machine. Feet are still available for the machine, so you won't have any problems finding a foot to fit any need you may find yourself needing. You can also find lots of used feet on ebay. The feet are built solid and very well engineered, so you won't have a problem with used feet. I wish you luck finding your power cord. It's definitely a must have. LOL I have a 910, which is the school version of the 930, with less stitches built in, but the same quality Bernina craftsmanship. The pedal broke on me and cost me $50 to have repaired. I found used ones on ebay, but they were $100 and up and one from a dealer was going to cost me about $200 or so. So it's definitely in your best interest to find the missing one. I know that to have the machine checked out at my local Bernina dealership is $50, well worth it to have a Bernina technician give it a good going over. Bernina dealerships set their own prices, so prices probably will not be the same at your local dealership. Find a dealer that you like if you have more than one close to you. Go in and meet with them and pick the ones who seem to be most knowledgeable. A good dealer is a present from heaven when you are having problems. When I bought my used 200 upgraded to a 730, I got it home and couldn't figure out how to wind a bobbin on it. LOL The dealer talked me through it step by step over the phone. I paid over $5000 for the machine and another $1500 for the Designer Plus Software. I'm still learning it after 2 years of ownership, but it was definitely worth the cost. I'm still learning new things it can do. Good luck with your new toy. A 930 in good working condition is worth $1000 or more, so your MIL definitely gave you a wonderful present. Have fun, Allen Duhon [email protected] Deridder, LA |
Lucky you!

Thanks,
I'm disabled, so my machine is my therapy. I bought it with my first Social Security Check. It was well worth the price. Allen |
Yes, it's worth having it looked at.
I have a 930, and I will Never give it up. I also have a 200E, and am looking at swapping that out for an 830E. Anyway, the 930 is great for piecing and quilting. It's the last machine they made with that type of bobbin assembly (rotary), and it's not all electronic which makes it a really reliable machine. I just had my cleaned up and it works like a charm. You should be able to get a power cord from a Bernina dealer, as they still do carry the parts to fix them up.
Have you tried Ebay for a cord?
tp |
Definitely have had my humble patchwork edition Bernina 11 years and not one problem.
I had a Bernina 930 and lover her. She sounded like a content kitten when her motor ran and you are right, they are very sturdy machines. I absolutely for sure would get her tuned up and look on craigslistg and ebay for parts you need. You have a valuable little gem in your grasp. Enjoy her!

Thanks, Everyone! I am definitely going to look for that cord. Everwhere on the Internet indicates the one for the 930 has been discontinued. If necessary, I'll contact a dealer. Can't wait to find it, get her serviced, and start sewing with the little gem.
Sounds like a great machine. I did a quick search online, and I came up with this conversation that might help. I'll save you some time... just skip down to the second-to-last post for information about other another cord that you can use with that machine, since the 930 cord has been discontinued.

You can't go wrong with a Bernina. My sister-in-law has the 830 and shes still sewing great.
I would have it professionally cleaned. Even if you have to by a cord the machine was free. Enjoy your new machine. |
I don't think that anyone would ever regret buying and servicing a Bernina - I am on my fourth Bernina but that's all I have ever owned for more than fifty years!!!
Definitely worth it! I just bought a Bernina 930 from the nicest quilter, on this board, and drove a few hours in bad weather for it. It's a treasure! The craftsmanship is beyond anything you're see today. I have several other machines, but wanted THIS ONE. They sell for $500-1000. Try eBay, craigslist, dealers, and sewitsforsale-a yahoo forum-for the cord. Just saw a 930 case there for $150.

I bought my 930 in 81, for yrs I didn't even have it serviced and am lucky if I remember to have it serviced now knowing better. I haven't had a bit of trouble with it, have sewn things that only commercial machines are suppose to sew. I don't even remember to clean and oil as I should. This machine will never leave you walking. WORTH IT. Machines will come and go but that one will be a keeper. I have thought I would love a new machine, but can't see paying all those big bucks for a new machine when this one is so good. It does everything and all Bernina feet can be ordered if you want a special foot. Everytime I take it out somewhere someone is trying to buy it from me including the man that services it.

My honey found an old Bernina 850, the predecessor of the 950. I found a place in Killeen, TX and UPSed it. It was frozen up. Spent about $180 to clean up and it works like a dream. One part was missing and he ordered it from overseas. The tech at this place in Killeen has 35 years of working on Bernina's. I go with the other quilters,,,,Keep it!
congratulations ... you will love your bernina, good luck with finding the cord...
It would be worth it if it works.
Thanks, Jenel. I saw that and will pursue that avenue if I have to but I'm keeping my fingers crossed in hopes I find the cord.
