I purchased a mat cleaner from Nancys notions, it looks like a rubber scraper and it does work, if you can clean your mat with something you have around the house why not.

You can flip the mat over and use it. It can be marked with a fine line permanent marker as well. My hubby uses my old mats out in his wood shop for cutting with his razor knifes and etc. He also made a fish cleaning station for a neighbor out of one of the old craft table size mats. He made the table from treated plywood and screwed the mat on so it would be weather tight (with some silicon seal under the edges before he screwed it down. He installed the sink on the right side of the mat so it over lapped that edge.....sometimes we have to think outside the box! hahaha

Don't toss in the trash you can use it for bottoms of bags.

I have done this a few times. I put a large towel on my dining table. In a bowel I mix distilled water and a drop or 2 of dawn dish detergent. I use a vegetable brush and lightly scrub the board. I then use clear distilled water, go over the board with a half of a sham wow. I let the air dry it, then buff over it with a quilters mat smoother. The board is like new every time.

Oh, don't trash it, you can cut them up to use as the bottom of totes or purses - or Paint over it with a solid color then - paint a quilt block on it to hang. If you use outdoor paint you can hang it outside.

Why would you need to wash it with soap and water. I've taken a damp cloth and wiped the fuzzies.
