I sure wish people would quit using the term xmas meaning Christmas. Christ was born on Christmas, not X.

I am so with you on this one. When I was in grade school; many, many years ago we did a bill board; one have showed Christmas having Christ as part of the word and the other showed the Xmas which showed it as money. When you spell Xmas you take Christ out of Christmas and that's what it is supposed to be all about. I'm a fan of shortening words especially when text messaging but this is one word that I can't shorten; I always think back to what was taught in school about the difference in the two words. No, I didn't go to a Christian school; it was public but long before people felt the need to remove it from schools. Merry Christmas to all.

Very nice, thanks!

Try out Whistlepig Creek. They have a great pattern for the covers. Also, I'm sure if you google it you'll come up with lots of patterns, probably a lot of them free.

romanojg 10-24-2011 05:10 AM

If you go to emlibrary.com they have one. It shows how to make it along with the sizes for the different eReaders. It's under thier projects; you can just ignore the part where you do the embroidery unless you want to do that. After seeing it this weekend I'm making one for my coworker who has the Nook.

Kath12 10-24-2011 06:32 AM

I have a pattern from Atkinson Designs which is called "Reader Wrap" ATK-156. It's finished size is 6"w X 8-1/2h X 1" deep. It is for a Nook, Kindle, or other e-reader (5-1/2 X 8 or smaller. Easily open and close securely with elastic or velcro. Includes an optional pocket for the M-edge book light.

AzSailor 10-24-2011 07:05 AM

When I "need" to shortcut the word Christmas, I use a "t"....tmas...as it looks like a cross, especially when writing it. It gets the message across. I also really dislike the "X'.

Karen K - We agree with you about Christmas vs. Xmas. I have an old record of George Beverly Shea singing, "Don't wish me Merry Xmas." It's not that much harder to write Christ than X. Thank you for taking a stand.

Guys, play nice! Not everyone is religious. I'm sure we all remember how out of hand things got with the bumper sticker thread.

I shorten mine to "C'mas."

Thanks for saying what some may not have the courage to.

It's a shame Christmas now-a-days is all about gifts and not about our Savior's birth.

susaninmd 10-24-2011 09:42 AM

Courage comes from accepting others not belittling them.

Please can everyone use the "Thumper rule": "If you can't say something nice,..., don't say anything at all!"

Xmas is a term that has been used for thousands of years... blame the Greeks and early Xians!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xmas

As far as iPad covers, I made mine with Timtex for sturdiness along with padding for softness and with elastic in the corners to hold the iPad in. Thanks for the links to many other ways to make a cover though. Had I seen those earlier, it would have made my lowly effort much easier.

susaninmd 10-24-2011 11:54 AM

I loved the Etch-A-Sketch cover. Going to make one for my
DMIL for a holiday gift. thanks for the link!

Isn't this supposed to be a quilters' forum, not a place for religious/non remarks that have nothing to do with quilting? Reminds me of a thread a year or so ago with folks outraged about how the "government" was trying to do horrible things to everyone. Not appropriate for this board, folks.

susaninmd 10-24-2011 01:57 PM

Thank you!

Just FYI, X is the the letter 'chi' which is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ. It has been abbreviated in this way for many, many years -even in religious documents. If the secular community WERE going to abbreviate it, don't you think it would be C-mas???

Marysewfun 10-24-2011 03:45 PM

I saw a You-Tube demo of Nancy Zieman with a pattern from Clover - she showed how to assemble them. Thank you for the Tip Nut reference I had lost my reference to that.

So, right you are. We all have quilting in common, but may not have the same in belief's.

I made one of these for my e-reader. If you know the size of the Ipad you could just enlarge it. I used some jelly roll strips that I had left over for mine. I used the new iron on velcro to keep it closed. Here is the Moda Bake Shop Website

And here is a photo of my cover:

sometimes its not thinking, that gets us into trouble! years ago while labeling Christmas overstocks, we were told to xmas it faster, time saving. A customer came down the aisle,& I asked if I could her. She said yes, - could you PLEASE stop Xing Jesus off his day? That was the last time I ever XMAS'D, Christmas. It relly didn't save that much time &not doing it showed some respect for the holiday.

Happy Tails 10-26-2011 02:46 AM

Thanks, those are great :)

Happy Tails 10-26-2011 02:59 AM

OMG people, really??? What happened to freedom of speech? Are we becoming that picky we turn a simple question into a big religious debate?? I won't buy Christmas cards that say "happy holidays" or seasons greetings, if it doesn't say Merry Christmas, I don't buy it, but I sure don't knock others who do. Children (I don't dare say kids) don't pick at each other the way adults seem to. I normally let people's snide remarks go unanswered but I just find this so utterly ridiculous I just can't stop shaking my head. My theory (which works great for me) if it isn't "LIFE THREATENING" why are you arguing about it??? I'm still shaking my head here, unbelievable and extremely disappointing,,.Wendy

Your e-reader cover is so cute. Thanks for the link to the Moda site for making it.

The Moda pattern looks great - definitely something I will be doing as soon as I get some time!

If I may add 2 cents to the X debate: I live in Jerusalem, which is a few miles from Bethlehem... The X is used very, very frequently here by many of the Christian churches in the area because X is the Greek CHI, the beginning of the original Greek word 'Christos' - Christ, as at least 2 other posters here have said. It is a traditional Christian symbol. However, if someone doesn't want to use it or doesn't like it, that is their choice.

I just got this in an e-mail. I thought it was hilarious. It was called Ipad Covers for sale.

Morag 10-29-2011 01:24 PM

I made a quilted cover and added a small 5 inch pocket inside for my ear phones. I also added a shoulder strap on it ... now it is a quilted I-pad shoulder bag :)
I made one for my daughter in-law too...made her happy:)

Arleners 10-30-2011 03:05 AM

I used to feel that way about Xmas, but then I learned something and now I don't feel that using Xmas is that bad. In Greek, the word for Christ is spelled Χριστός

Maybe not for all people, but this is the origin of using Xmas instead of Christmas, I've been told.

I choose to be positive about it. Even if someone is using it to take Christ out of Christmas (and I am not saying anyone here was doing that) He finds a way to fit in!!!! :-)

Thanks, I was looking for such a pattern myself and I like this one a lot!

Bobbinchick 11-02-2011 09:49 PM

I made one very similar for my kindle, but I put a pocket on the back of it for the cord so when ever I go to my folk's house I won't forget the cord as it stays right there in the pocket. I should have made the pocket a little bit longer tho. It was easy to make too. I also found a book cover at the Goodwill that has a zipper on it and made some protection and I do use it once inna while, but there is no place for the cord unless I make a little pouch and attach it to the strap that is on it. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay

Your tute was great! Loved the fabrics you used on both. Will be making this cover this weekend. Thanks for taking the time to put this in a tute.

Crafty1 11-03-2011 03:18 AM

The tutes are great! Will be making one for when we travel! Thanks for sharing.

Ipad/Kindle/ereader cover

I made two of these - one for me and one for my daughter, just before we went to Switzerland this summer. They made up pretty easily and were robust and effective, as well as looking good.

The link is: http://www.chicaandjo.com/2009/09/03...le-cover-case/

I used a fat quarter, and joined it half way down. This gave me a piece longer than the instructions specified, but I used the extra to make a pocket for a pencil or piece of dowelling. I found this helped it stand up more successfully.

I modified the pattern a bit, made it bigger, and made one for my sister's Ipad. I don't have a photo of that, but it looks similar to the one in the picture, but just bigger!

Hope you find a pattern that suits you.

Our priest(Catholic) told us that Xmas was good because X is the symbol for Christ.

I'm sorry but I really thought this thread was about Ipad covers. A number of posters have made the comment that in the rules that we have all subscribed to, there should not really be any discussion about religious topics. Please can this now stop. I am getting bored.
