Gabrielle's Mimi 12-28-2010 04:34 PM

My DH just surprised me with an iPad for Christmas and I've been playing with apps all day (this is new to me...don't have an iPhone). Which ones have you used? One is $30 and I wonder if it's worth it as it sounds similar to my EQ6. Another is for recording your stash...could I just do that as a list? I'd like to have an inventory of UFOs and items I need to buy, any suggestions for that? Thanks in advance for your help.

Luv Quilts and Cats 12-28-2010 04:37 PM

There are quilting apps for the iPad? I did not know that. Darn, I didn't need to know that! LOL!

bj 12-28-2010 04:40 PM

OHNO! I've been trying to convince myself I didn't really want one. I played with my son's one day and I really like it. He tells me you can read books on them, too. My two favorite things together...reading and quilting. I'm doomed!!! :-D :-D

sewwhat85 12-28-2010 04:40 PM

That makes me wonder if there are droid apps for quilting too... I might have to go have a looksee!!

grammyx5 12-28-2010 06:06 PM

please let me know what quilting apps you find and like for droid -just received one as a gift for the holidays...

I'm used to a PC so don't know what programs you have on your Ipad, but a good spreadsheet would do a great job for what you want to do. Even a simple table in a word procesing document would work but you wouldn't have as many options as you have with a spreadsheet program...I use Excel and think it's great...good luck

You're right, and I use Excel for lots of stuff, including a list of all my quilting tools and machine feet, patterns, etc. but I don't think I can get Excel on iPad because it's not Apple. Anyone know how to make this work?

I don't believe the Apple apps can be run on Android devices. They are a different operating system. The Android market is making new apps all the time so you should be able to find something if you keep searching :-) I had a hard time deciding between the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Apple IPad. I went with the Apple even though I am not a big fan of over hyped Apple products.

I just checked on line and Apple has a spreadsheet program for the Ipad....depending on what you are looking for it to do, you may be better off getting this program for your inventory program than a more specialized program...not sure what is in each piece of software, but a spreadsheet program can do a lot of stuff.

kristen0112 12-29-2010 07:54 AM

Well since no who has an iPad has purchased it I just did. Of course I am at work and can't play with it until later but will let you know.

You're right Apple apps will not work on an Android. I've only had my phone about a week so I'm still learning what's on the Android market.

I really have an aversion to Apple products after having to clean up a few computers that were running iTunes. It was the main reason that I went with a 'droid.

i use the robert kaufman ap, be careful with the blockfab ap it's off in some calculations. but it's fun because it'll email the instructions.

kristen0112 12-29-2010 12:55 PM

So I played with the quilters ap on my lunch hour it's fun to use there is only 121 different quilt blocks so I sent an email to the app support asking if blocks from quilters cache could be down loaded

Is that an iPad app? Or just something you use on the Internet?

MoMoSews 12-29-2010 01:00 PM

Good to know. My Ipad for my birthday is in transit as we speak or type

bjchad 12-29-2010 01:08 PM

I have a few quilting aps on my iPad. My favorite is quilting 101. It is a reader for video feeds from Leah Day on FMQ. She usually updates twice a week with a new tutorial video. Very inexpensive and fun to watch. I also use the block one mentioned earlier for inspiration. I have not tried the $30 one but would be interested in knowing about it if someone does decide to get it. The quilting 101 is under iPhone apps.

There's two different apps block fab and quilt fab both by
Mary kay podlecki

gale 12-29-2010 03:06 PM

ah ok. I'll have to look for block fab too. I like the Kaufman one better than the quilt fab.

Gabrielle's Mimi 12-30-2010 04:05 PM

I was playing around with different apps and found "Jot! Free" which is free and fabulous for practicing your FMQ. It's like a white board with different colored markers. I was trying to make feathers and other types of FMQ and it's great...just erase your mistakes! Lots of fun.

hobo2000 12-30-2010 04:18 PM

I am waiting for mine to come, my DH and all 4 DS's went together and ordered it. It should be here tomorrow. I can't wait.

BellaBoo 12-30-2010 04:36 PM

I'm hoping EQ will have an app soon.

Cindy2sew 12-30-2010 09:16 PM

Cindy

I just checked and it's Robert Kauffmans "Quilters little helper" . I LOVE this app!!

kristen0112 12-31-2010 07:39 AM

So I have been working on the quilters app (the one that costs 30 bucks) and I am so frustrated. I had a quilt almost finished on it I was separating colors on the border and the blocks are so small it's hard to isolate them. Then the border is too close to the info button that brings up the instructional video. I try tapping on it to close out and it won't close. I can't save the quilt it's lost over an hour of working on it and it's gone!

Gabrielle's Mimi 12-31-2010 12:46 PM

How frustrating! Doesn't that make you crazy? Sorry!

Lizard 12-31-2010 05:44 PM

Oh no. I've been trying to hold out for a couple years on the iPad, it gets harder every time someone says, "there's an app for that" lol

Thanks the developer of he program is good about replying to emails. He said that in the next release that button will be farther away. Yeah! He also wants more details about it closing down on me so the next time that happens I will send all the sets that I was doing when it occursnif it occurs it all could be user error :-)

He also replied back about adding blocks and that I can give him the names and he will work on adding those.

IPad

Rumor has it that Santa is bringing an IPad this Christmas! I am so happy to find out about quilting apps! Can't wait!

sewmary 12-19-2011 03:03 PM

For Apple, Droid, Linux, Windows or anything else - Google docs has free spreadsheet and word processing applications. You use them and store them at Google. When you want someone to see them, you send a link. My son uses them all the time to send me Christmas lists and other stuff! You don't have to be tied to any operating ssytem that way.

Since it is highly unlikely that Santa is bringing an Ipad to my house, I will buy one after the holidays. Someone told me that I missed a QVC deal yeasterday with 5 easy pay. Darn.
