*Sigh* I swore I wouldn't start anymore projects until I finished one, but I just started another project. While cutting up jeans, I thought it would be need to make a wall hanging with the pockets to put above my sewing machine to store all the little things I need but always seem to be buried. The pockets are laid out and the background is chosen...and I have another 6 project started.

Anyone else have this problem? If so, how do you deal with it? I've tried using 5 bags, one for each project so I could rotate, but I ran out and grabbed a shoe box, now this one is laying on my cutting board. Does being a new quilter have anything to do with this??

Or does it just get worse as you get better at quilting like I've read others have?

auntpiggylpn 07-27-2011 05:23 PM

No, being a new quilter doesn't have anything to do with it. Being a quilter in general does!!! Most quilters have several projects going at one time. It' okay!!!!

GagaSmith 07-27-2011 05:25 PM

I'm afraid it won't get better but don't worry, you're in good company. LOL

craftybear 07-27-2011 05:25 PM

It seems like all of us has different projects going on at the same time

Jim's Gem 07-27-2011 05:25 PM

I just don't feel right unless I have several projects going at once. I just finished 7 projects and can't decide what to work on next. Today I made a couple of blocks that were promised for a quilt. I need to pull fabrics and put together several projects!!!!

cjomomma 07-27-2011 05:25 PM

It just get worse! A whole lot worse. Atleast it did for me. LOL! :-)

Now dear quilter, this just proves that you have an active mind and can think of things to do faster than your hands can make them.

Glassquilt 07-27-2011 06:02 PM

We're just too creative to be limited to one project. :)

littlehud 07-27-2011 06:15 PM

When I started I just made one quilt at time. Start to finish. Now I a lot of quilts in various stages. It just gets worse but is so much fun.

jean1941 07-27-2011 06:27 PM

Worse but it is good if get tired of one work on another one but try too finish once in awhile LOL Like I do

rusty quilter 07-27-2011 06:28 PM

Consider yourself "multi-talented!" Okay, you have more than one thing going at once...doesn't that make you special??

Connie in CO 07-27-2011 06:29 PM

I have so projects hanging on hangers just waiting for me to finish them.Connie in CO

that's the problem, they're all in various stages, but none seem to get finished. I just went through a box of all the little pieces that were left over from other quilts and started cutting for a jacob's ladder quilt. that one I know is going to take a while though as I need about 1000 1 1/2 inch blocks along with a bunch of other pieces. I'm waiting on batting and backing for 2 of them so some will get finished soon as I can't wait to put it on my bed!

Phannie1 07-27-2011 06:33 PM

I have finish three projects and I can till you I have three others started and about 3 others in the planning stages. And I do not plan to keep any of them. Ha :-D

KS quilter 07-27-2011 07:34 PM

I am usually (hand) quilting on one quilt while piecing by
machine on another. However, I have several totes with what
I need for other quilts. This doesn't bother me, because
in my mnd's eye I know how I want a certain quilt to look,
and I can't always find just exactly the fabric I'm looking
for. I am fortunate to have a fabric shop in our small town
of 9,000, and I like everything about it...but she doesn't
stock the same things as some other shops. Also have a shop
a 10 miles from me. She carries different lines of fabric
They are both wonderful shops. My next choice is an hour
away and I keep a list of what I want from that shop and
make my trip once a year (she gives you a percentage off of
half your age, on everythng you buy on one trip in). That
way I can justify the gasoline by my savings. I just have
to plan ahead for what I want to make, so it doesn't bother
me at all to have them sitting here ready to go.
I've quit buying for my 'stash' as leftovers seem to
take care of adding to that.

luvnquilt 07-27-2011 08:42 PM

I don't like the chaotic feeling of having too many projects going at once. I've discovered that if I just group the upcoming projects in project bags and limit myself to no more than 2 or 3 actually cut out and in progress, I'm not too stressed. I have 2 little kids and a 3rd kid in his 40s so I have to organize myself if I want to keep my sanity :)

cedarvalleyquilts 07-27-2011 08:47 PM

I usually have several projects going at once, usually in various stages. One paper pieced, on traditional piecing...one that may still need to be quilted and another that needs bound. That way I can work on whatever strikes my mood. At least that's my story (and I'm sticking to it!) lol

You are just exercising you creativeness constructively. You are listening to your inner muse.

How great!

What you've got here are UFO's. I've got so many of them that I've put a stop to all new projects until I finish what I've started. This could take a while.

GladGrams 07-28-2011 03:25 AM

Relax it is called being "Creative and Productive" and who wants to NOT BE THAT?!??!

harleywife 07-28-2011 03:27 AM

I think it's because you are using your creativity talents . And , you don't want to get bored because then you will not want to sew or create !!! ( well , this is my excuse , anyway !! )

kathyd 07-28-2011 03:52 AM

I don't have excuses for UFO's other than I got bored and wanted to work on something else.
Newer prettier fabrics caught my eye.
That pattern would look great out of this.

Maybe its a form of ADD!

KarenR 07-28-2011 03:54 AM

Oh yes.
How do I fix it?
I will watch this post.

jeanneb52 07-28-2011 03:55 AM

Did you finish raising one kid before you started on the next one????? I think not. Just have fun and don't sweat the UFOs

I hope not! I'm 18! but that is a very valid point!

deedum 07-28-2011 04:02 AM

You'll get used to it! I did! :)

running1 07-28-2011 04:05 AM

We're not supposed to have several projects going at once?? uh-oh,... I'm in real trouble!

redmadder 07-28-2011 04:06 AM

Along with wearing purple outfits, I intend to start as many projects as I like.

Really though, I know from experience that there will be times when creativity just dries up and mindless tasks will be all I can manage. When that happens, there are my UFOs and they all get finished eventually.

JabezRose 07-28-2011 04:09 AM

Have a bag of ziploc gallon size bags setting right there next to cutting mat. I get a idea, whack up the material, stuff it in baggie so when going off, usually, to sew with friends, grab a couple and the featherweight and off I go. Now, mind you, I have worked my way through almost a box of ziploc baggies and have no where near that amount of quilt tops done. Yes, to whom ever inherits my stash, that one with the pink panther pattern, that is to be made into a "trip around the world" quilt top.

ghquilter53 07-28-2011 04:15 AM

You bet it's a problem. And I work in a quilt shop where there are sooo many things to start. I think I get it under control and then another new line of fabric comes in or another pattern, book....and like it all!!!!

LoriMcc 07-28-2011 04:25 AM

Quilters are queens of UFO's. To quilt is divine, to finish is a miracle! lol

MargeD 07-28-2011 04:27 AM

I always have several projects going at the same time, and sometimes had trouble finding the pattern or fabric or both when I wanted to finish. I found these larger zip-lock bags in the grocery store, so when I find a project I want to do, I put the pattern or magazine in the bag, along with the fabric - that way when I'm ready I don't have to go searching for what I need. I started doing this when I would pick out a pattern, start cutting out the fabric, have to stop and when I picked the bag up again, I didn't know what I was doing? I know no one else has that problem, but the bags go into a smaller tote until I'm ready to get back to that project. I don't know of any quilter that doesn't have several projects going at once. I get tired of working on it, have hit a snag and need to put it away, or something else comes up that needs to be done first. You are in great company.

Drew 07-28-2011 04:28 AM

I was told by my first quilting teacher (a nun) that the pioneer women had several going at a time in different stages. I follow that information to a tea!! (LOL)

sueisallaboutquilts 07-28-2011 04:45 AM

I have never NOT had a lot of projects going at the same time. I used to feel bad about it but I realize that it's just the way I operate and it's okay! :D

Jo Mama 07-28-2011 05:18 AM

You're describing my sewing life.

Kayaker26 07-28-2011 05:18 AM

When I first started quilting only about 2 years ago I did not understand it...now I do. I am ashamed at just how many UFO's or PIG's I have. But like y'all say I'm in good company!

Rettie V. Grama 07-28-2011 05:26 AM

Yes, but I don't consider it a problem. Currently I am working on 6 different quilts. The reason I'm working on this many is because I decided to reduce my stash all by myself and each piece I cut into has different dimensions, therefore, 6 quilts. It is going very well and I don't get bored with one quilt.
What ever I feel like working on when I start in the morning, is what I do all day. Just this week, I have one almost ready to finish. I do Quilt as you Go method. The center of this one is ready to layer and quilt. Next comes the sides, still to be pieced-no problem, I'll do that tomorrow.

sarahrachel 07-28-2011 05:33 AM

I recounted. I have 12 going. Hand quilting 2 that NEED to be done by christmas, one table runner for christmas, a charity quilt that I need to sit down with with my seam ripper (grrr!), the one laying on my cutting board (I guess if I leave it there, I can't start anymore), a denim circle quilt that needs more circles cut out, one quilt I'm waiting on backing and batting, one that needs backing and batting but can wait as I want to finish it for my wedding day, ya know, when I finally get out of the sewing room to find a boyfriend/fiance, 2 pinapple pillows which I'm counting as the same project and 2 quilts I'm collecting scraps for, a jacob's ladder with finished blocks being 6 inchs(such tiny pieces) and another scrappy quilt for my brother when he graduates in 3 years. It's kind of overwhelming. I don't know how some people do only one quilt at a time. But at least I'm not alone! :)
