It's Virtual Quilt Day!! Today - Sunday, March 17, 2013

Hi all!!

I am posting this a little early, but I want to be able to sleep in tomorrow morning and didn't want to leave anyone hanging!! Plus the Aussies and Brits will keep this thread lively for us until those of us in the US wake up and get sewing!! :) :)

Today is the day!! Today I am hosting a Virtual Quilt Day. There are no rules. Basically I started this because I was too lazy to lug my sewing machine to the local quilt store for an all day sew-in. So I decided to have a home sew in with all my friends through the internet!! Join in anytime you can today. All you have to do is come here when you start and tell us your goals, then through out the day check in and let us know how you are doing and leave encouragement for others! That's it!! If you can only join us for half a day, that's fine. If you are in a different time zone, that's fine. This is just a loose and fun thing!! I find it helps me to sew more if I am joined by so many other sewers as well!!

My goal for today: Do something!! LOL

I haven't been quilting much, so anything I can get done will be an accomplishment for me. :)

Cheers!
Rachel

Hoping I can join in again, sure enjoyed it last month!

I'm going to have to have someone virtually quilt for me on Virtual Quilt day. I'm going to be on a bus for 13 1/2 hours with 33 high school students :D yee hah! It is travel day for our mission team. We have 9 teams from our school going out of country and in country for a week or more helping people in many ways: feeding the homeless and hungry, working in orphanages, clinics, nursing homes, after school programs, schools, helping those touched by disasters clean up and rebuild, coming alongside missionaries who are helping various people groups etc. gets them out of their comfort zone, focus on others and grow and mature. Will sew when we get back over spring break, but I'll be "virtually quilting in my head on that bus! Have fun ya'll!

I am still up from Saturday, but have been hand quilting all night!! I am going to try to get a few hours sleep if I can, and hoping to finish the quilting and bind this quilt tomorrow...Then off to scrap organization, although I would much rather begin another quilt! If sleep does not come, I will be back at it...Having pnemonia is a pain, since I find I cough horribly and even worse when I try to lay down...at least I have something productive to do!!

Hi all.
Awoke in time for F1 and was so excited to start .Pattern plus all I did during the race in the picture. Going to sew frog down now. Oh don't expect my finished quilt to look like picture as I always do my own thing as I go. If you are not sure what to do can you find the differences so far. ( can't you tell I was a teacher)

I am sitting and relaxing at the end of a long day with a little hand stitching. Working on a double wedding ring with a twist. Had a few opps early on but have it under control now. We had our pumpkin weight in today. Fund raiser for the local tennis club. Lots of fun and laughs in the district over the growing of these monsters.

Well hello everyone. It is 10.50 am here and I am just about to have coffee and a look at the Sunday papers then I shall start quilting my twin quilt (it is one of a pair, the other is finished). I managed to sandwich and baste it yesterday so I am ready to go. I am determined to master posting pictures so I can show you all how much I achieve. I love these VQDs as they really get me focused and I get so much done. Thank you so much Rachel for organising and the early start.

I am going to finish piecing my plus sign quilt. I didn't follow the direction precisely and thought the quilt would be a lot bigger than it is. Still wondering about putting on a border. What do u think?

carolaug 03-17-2013 03:34 AM

Good Morning! its 7:30am here. I have been surfing the board, drinking my coffee and getting ready to bind my King quilt. I quilted it yeasterday on my Jamone 7700 and it was very easy to my surprise. I keep puttin it off...so glad my husband encouraged me to finish it...I woke up and he had laid out the backing, batting and top...I just had to spray bast it. Then he helped me bring it to the sewing machine...LOL...he really wants this finished....he has been wanting one for our bed since i have started to quilt. I used all 1/3 tumbler pieces/scraps and fabric my friend had given me. She had a box of fabric from the Chicago fabric shop. For the back I used 10 inch square blocks. All I have left to do is bind...oh I only did straight line sewing using the accufeed foot, worked great, no issues and fast...I will take a picture and post.

It's just past noon here, and I'm just getting started on my quilting for the day. I'm attaching rows together for my Irish Chain quilt. Here's to hoping I can get a lot done today!

sandy l 03-17-2013 03:36 AM

Found a 9" PP pinapple block and have decided I want to make it crazy pieced. So am going to be sorting scraps, as it's going to need 36 different fabrics for each block:D

I think it needs a border problem is what colour as the quilt is so full of lovely colours already. Love the quilt and pattern.

I'd go for a border too, maybe a dark grey or even black with plus sign corner stones? It's a lovely quilt!! So colorful. :) :)

I'm working on a wings over paradise panel that I put some sashing on yesterday. I did cheat a bit yesterday & started quilting it, but I am hoping to have the bulk of it done today. I'm doing a free motion on it, outlining feathers, branches, leaves, flowers....
The quilt will go up for raffle in a few weeks or so to a not for profit group that helps out birds who are given up as well as from seizures who are in desperate need of medical attention.

carolaug 03-17-2013 03:56 AM

Frog quilt....I can't wait to see how this comes out...so far it looks GREAT!

germanquilter 03-17-2013 04:05 AM

HI everyone! I will be joining you ladies today. I was supposed to go to a 3-day retreat in PA last Friday but ended up with a stomach bug and had to stay home :( I spent most of Friday and Saturday in bed resting but started feeling better last night so today I want to work on one of the projects that I had packed to take to retreat. Maybe I will get at least something done at home this way!

Hello everyone! I have starched all my fabric and put it in plastic bags in the freezer. When I get home from early church, I'll iron my fabric and start cutting out my quilt of dark green (for St. Patrick's Day) and cream. Until time to leave for church, I am working on an appliqué block. It would be wonderful if I could finish that today also. Best wishes to all of you. I hope you accomplish your goals.

SuzieQuilts 03-17-2013 04:15 AM

I just got home from a 3 day retreat at a LQS 100 miles away, so dishes and laundry have top priority today. Germanquilter, I feel so bad for you having to miss out on a retreat. What a disappointment. I teach, and my students have been sharing their germs with me all winter. I was so worried I would pick up something and not be able to go and enjoy it. I do have a Mondo bag I started, and would like to work on that today, I guess we will see.

grann of 6 03-17-2013 04:16 AM

I am going to join in too. First I have to go soak my aching back in the tub for a bit, arthritis is bad today with this damp weather. Then I am going to work on some machine embroidery for a quilt for my brother, with classic cars on it, then one for my SIL with hummingbirds on hers. I am going to go visit them in Michigan in a few weeks and want to take them lap quilts for in front of the TV. Then this afternoon during the NASCAR race (TV is in my bedroom) I will finish assembling two different Double Slice Layer Cakes. An ambitius day for me, but I will try to get as much done as I can.

Little RoO 03-17-2013 04:22 AM

Ok....12.15pm here....so just had my toast and tea having just come back from chapel....bit of an odd day as the family are gathering for a belated Mothering Sunday as we were unable to be together last week.
Plan for today's quilting is to piece the blocks for my daughter cot quilt for her baby due in May, nothing fancy at all, just 4 inch blocks and a border. Using my Janome 6600 ......oh and maybe having to tidy the room first !!

ranger 03-17-2013 04:30 AM

Good Morning everyone.
It is 9:30a.m. here in Eastern Canada. Happy Patrick's Day!
Plan to quilt a baby quilt today. Need to get my camera batteries recharged to take a pic of the quilt. Trouble is, my son took the charger earlier this week...hope he visits here today & brings the charger with him.
The baby quilt is for DH's nephew's son. I am doing mostly diagonal quilting through the small squares.
Hope you all have a wonderful quilty day.
Will check back later.

Raggiemom 03-17-2013 04:40 AM

hopetoquilt, I agree that a border would add to it. Maybe just a simple solid color or tone on tone.

I'm very impressed by how busy everyone is so far. I'll join you after church and lunch :)

ube quilting 03-17-2013 04:42 AM

Good morning everyone. Glad to be with you today......I am working on samples for a Dresden Plate. I am unable to post pics since my PC upgraded itself and now lots of things aren't working. I will enjoy seeing every ones work, so post lots of pics for me and all to enjoy.:D:D

Plus sign update... Okay, when I made this, I didn't do any calculations as to finish size. It is a lot smaller than I anticipated. Only about 50"x50". I do want to add a border. I thought maybe solid black or solid white? I am off to make breakfast and take a crossfit class. I have been playing evil leprechaun tricks on my kids all morning. I put radically different sheets (angry birds) on their beds while they slept. Then we did a treasure hunt with clues from the leprechaun to find a pot of gold (a few Reese's cups). I will turn their pancakes green next...

I am all set to get started on the virtual quilting day. My primary goal is to quilt my Dancing with the Stars quilt - I'm aiming to finish at least one row, and hoping for two. In between I have fabric for a new quilt that I bought yesterday, and some block of the month projects to catch up on. So that should keep me hopping.

The quilt is lovely. I think that I would pick one of the colours out of the quilt, personally. Black or white solid seem like they might be a bit too stark. Maybe a mottled grey-ish black, if you don't want a colour, or the colour of that really dark cross in the second row. (Now you'll tell me that is solid black :) )

bunniequilter 03-17-2013 05:05 AM

I will be sitting at my desk at work with some hand piecing, which I doubt I will be able to work on, very very busy at work lately. I wonder, if I tell my boss this is a very important significant religious holiday for me would I get to stay home?

lots2do 03-17-2013 05:17 AM

Okay, I've lounged around enough. I'm ready yo face my sewing space. It's been untouched for a while. I will try to post a picture of what I've worked on today, later on! Enjoy your sewing everybody!

kubby343434 03-17-2013 05:32 AM

i am going to finish up my lonestar quilt and work on my periwinle quilt top have 2 rows put together..........happysewing everyone:)

germanquilter 03-17-2013 05:39 AM

To hopetoquilt:
I would consider using a small 1.5 inch cut black inner border (finish 1 inch) to finish off the pattern and then I would pick up a color from the quilt for your bigger outer border :)

I need to get moving and take a shower so I can get into my sewing room....9:35 am here on the East Coast :)

kaelynangelfoot 03-17-2013 06:00 AM

I'm having trouble deciding what to work on.. so I'm not working on anything. Argh... I should just hop to it! I've got a whole list of WIPs, UFOs, and New Projects.

QuiltingVagabond 03-17-2013 06:04 AM

I will be sewing soon (as soon as I finish surfing the board) and will be working on the same project as last month. Sadly, I only have a couple days a month that I can spend the whole day sewing, but happily, today is the day!

Anyway, I managed to get my flying geese cut to size and I am ready to assemble them into blocks. I'll check in later...

Pat625 03-17-2013 06:07 AM

WOW..so busy everyone..I stayed up till about 4 am hand quilting...Just got up again, and checking the board before I go back to quilting...Happy St Patricks Day everyone!! Coffee and Irish Soda Bread while I work!

Hurray! My DH took a few minutes and installed FIREFOX. So far all the PC problems seem to have disappeared.

I will now attempt to post a few pics of what I'm working on today. Samples of a Dresden Plate. Here goes. The first one is my trial block.

Fascinating to see the hours sta,ped on each post. Love to see quilters from all over the world.

Here are a few more pics of DP. These are for a wall hanging for me. I made them to practice before I have to start the baby quilt after it is approved by MTB.

I started these on Friday, choosing and cutting. Started piecing on WQD, yesterday and finished them this morning.
Enjoy. peace
