Ja-Gnome, or Ja-No-Me?
Just wondering.
I say the latter!
Are you asking about pronunciation of the Janome brand? Aren't those pronounced the same? silent G.
Ja-no-me - maybe this is one of those regional dialects.
Ja-gnome, but I've never actually heard it pronounced by anyone else so I'm going on how it reads to me.
So is it two syllables or three? I have assumed only two, but I also know what assuming does to U and ME. Lol!
1. jä-nōm (Two syllables)
2. jä-'nō-mē (Three syllables) ?? |
the second one.
To me both are acceptable. The first being French and the second being English.
It's a Japanese company so I assume it's pronounced in the Japanese way. It sounds more like Ja-no-me when my Japanese friend says it. Of course, her accent adds a little something that a Midwestern girl just can't replicate.
The dealer near here says it the second way. But we are midwesterns, so maybe that's a regional thing?
I asked this question a long time ago and found out I had been mispronouncing it for years. It is the 3-syllable version:
2. jä-'nō-mē (Three syllables) with the emphasis on the middle syllable. |
Definitely 3 syllables.

This is from a Janome website: In Japanese, the word Janome (pronounced Ja-NO-me) means "eye of the snake." The company earned the name in the 1920s when founder Yosaku Ose, a pioneer in Japanese sewing manufacturing, began to use a round metal bobbin system instead of the traditional long shuttle. The Japanese thought the new round bobbin looked like a snake's eye, and from the innovative design, a name was born.
I left in the info about the name because i though it was interesting. The site is: http://content.janome.com/index.cfm/AboutJanome |
The Japanese pronunciation has three syllables. I guess it wouldn't be the only foreign word that gets mispronounced....
i had always pronounced it with 3 syllables
3 syllables and a great machine!
It's three!!!

I found this on their website. Ja is "snake", no is "of", and me means "eye." Same meaning as eye of snake, but different word order. Deborah |

Our Janome dealer says Ja-no-me. Three syllables. :)
I just bought a new Janome and the manufacture called it Ja nom e ....
 Thanks, everyone!
many years ago, I took a class from a local quilt store, which sold Pfaffs - I brought my Janome to class and the instructor who hated Janome referred to it as my "Jer-om-ey" - that name has stuck in my mind.....
Three syllables
Ja -NO-me. It's means "eye of the snake" in Japanese.
All the dealers around here use the three syllable pronunciation. So do I.
he, he. some people add R's to everything!!!
Should have called her Pfaff a Paff.
It is the second one.

Ja no me in So. Cal.
I was employed by Janome Co. before retiring a few years ago. When I attended their conventions in various parts of the country all educators and dealers pronounced it Ja-NO-Me. 3 syllables

Right straight "from the horse's mouth!" Sandrea gets the final word. Ding Ding Ding! Give that girl a prize! Thanks for playing! |
I've always just said the two-syllable, but I have a heavy Mississippi accent, so I sound different everywhere I go!
My Janome dealer, who has traveled to the factory, calls it Ja-no-me
