Ja-Gnome, or Ja-No-Me?

Just wondering.

SmickChick 06-24-2013 12:21 PM

I say the latter!

Treasureit 06-24-2013 12:22 PM

Are you asking about pronunciation of the Janome brand? Aren't those pronounced the same? silent G.

cjsews 06-24-2013 12:24 PM

Ja-no-me - maybe this is one of those regional dialects.

quiltingnewbie 06-24-2013 12:26 PM

Ja-gnome, but I've never actually heard it pronounced by anyone else so I'm going on how it reads to me.

mom-6 06-24-2013 12:29 PM

So is it two syllables or three? I have assumed only two, but I also know what assuming does to U and ME. Lol!

Teeler 06-24-2013 12:29 PM

1. jä-nōm (Two syllables)
2. jä-'nō-mē (Three syllables)

??

Annaquilts 06-24-2013 12:31 PM

the second one.

EasyPeezy 06-24-2013 12:32 PM

To me both are acceptable. The first being French and the second being English.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 06-24-2013 12:54 PM

It's a Japanese company so I assume it's pronounced in the Japanese way. It sounds more like Ja-no-me when my Japanese friend says it. Of course, her accent adds a little something that a Midwestern girl just can't replicate.

Quilter 65 06-24-2013 12:55 PM

The dealer near here says it the second way. But we are midwesterns, so maybe that's a regional thing?

Prism99 06-24-2013 01:00 PM

I asked this question a long time ago and found out I had been mispronouncing it for years. It is the 3-syllable version:

2. jä-'nō-mē (Three syllables)

with the emphasis on the middle syllable.

dunster 06-24-2013 01:12 PM

Definitely 3 syllables.

marymm 06-24-2013 01:31 PM

This is from a Janome website: In Japanese, the word Janome (pronounced Ja-NO-me) means "eye of the snake." The company earned the name in the 1920s when founder Yosaku Ose, a pioneer in Japanese sewing manufacturing, began to use a round metal bobbin system instead of the traditional long shuttle. The Japanese thought the new round bobbin looked like a snake's eye, and from the innovative design, a name was born.

I left in the info about the name because i though it was interesting. The site is: http://content.janome.com/index.cfm/AboutJanome

noveltyjunkie 06-24-2013 01:52 PM

The Japanese pronunciation has three syllables. I guess it wouldn't be the only foreign word that gets mispronounced....

QuiltnNan 06-24-2013 02:48 PM

i had always pronounced it with 3 syllables

Jackie Spencer 06-24-2013 03:13 PM

3 syllables and a great machine!

nativetexan 06-24-2013 04:01 PM

It's three!!!

I found this on their website. Ja is "snake", no is "of", and me means "eye." Same meaning as eye of snake, but different word order.

That's how my Janome dealer says it...and that's how I do too.

The dealers call it by #2. That is the only way I have heard it said.

klgls 06-25-2013 03:45 AM

Our Janome dealer says Ja-no-me. Three syllables. :)

cjaneky 06-25-2013 03:57 AM

I just bought a new Janome and the manufacture called it Ja nom e ....

Teeler 06-25-2013 04:33 AM

 Thanks, everyone!

molsonbindie 06-25-2013 04:38 AM

many years ago, I took a class from a local quilt store, which sold Pfaffs - I brought my Janome to class and the instructor who hated Janome referred to it as my "Jer-om-ey" - that name has stuck in my mind.....

Yooper32 06-25-2013 04:45 AM

Three syllables

katesnanna 06-25-2013 05:44 AM

Ja -NO-me. It's means "eye of the snake" in Japanese.

sulyle 06-25-2013 06:04 AM

All the dealers around here use the three syllable pronunciation. So do I.

nativetexan 06-25-2013 06:36 AM

he, he. some people add R's to everything!!!

Lady Diana 06-25-2013 06:40 AM

Should have called her Pfaff a Paff.

feffertim 06-25-2013 07:21 AM

It is the second one.

Deborah

Also....JA ('a' sounds like the a in 'ha, ha'); NO ('o' is a long o as in 'no'); ME ('e' sounds like the e in 'text')

Just my 2 cents worth ;0)

linhawk 06-25-2013 08:51 AM

Ja no me in So. Cal.

Sandrea 06-25-2013 09:18 AM

I was employed by Janome Co. before retiring a few years ago. When I attended their conventions in various parts of the country all educators and dealers pronounced it Ja-NO-Me. 3 syllables

Right straight "from the horse's mouth!" Sandrea gets the final word
. Ding Ding Ding! Give that girl a prize!
Thanks for playing!

Latrinka 06-25-2013 10:20 AM

I've always just said the two-syllable, but I have a heavy Mississippi accent, so I sound different everywhere I go!

KyKaren1949 06-25-2013 11:04 AM

My Janome dealer, who has traveled to the factory, calls it Ja-no-me

Why do some teachers have to bad mouth any machine that is not their personal favorite? Certainly turns me off. We all have our preferences just like we all have our quirks

oldtnquiltinglady 06-25-2013 01:40 PM

LOL, ladies. I stand corrected (I always say Janom); but will forever say Ja no me now)....and the Pfaff/Paff entry really turned my tickled box up side down......

jeanharville 06-25-2013 03:44 PM

Latrinka, I'm from the south too and I thought all words down here had 3 syllables JK.
Marymm, thanks for posting the link about Janome/New Home. very interesting.
