My dealer came to the house yesterday to see what was going on and why i was having trouble with it. It turns out I was using the wrong foot to FMQ! I was using the open toe darning foot and it was causing trouble. I now have a metal foot with the adjustment where it raises up and down for thicker quilts and it moves so smooth now. He's also getting me a better bobbin case and a straight stitch plate.

He is so patient and even taught my 6yo how to free motion! What a great experience. I'm so excited and love my new machine now. Thanks everyone for all your encouragement to talk with him and ask for help. If i didn't that machine would sadly be in the closet where it does not belong.

He is teaching a t shirt quilt class at my quilt store and I am going to take it I can't wait! yay! I love great customer service. I will def come back for more machines in the future and will send people to him ;)

Edited to add the name of the shop! It's "People Places and Quilts" in Summerville SC It's an awesome store in downtown Summerville, if you are ever in the Lowcountry you need to stop and visit!

watterstide 06-28-2011 06:42 AM

Good For You! Send him to Michigan to teach me to FMQ better!

DebraK 06-28-2011 06:43 AM

Glad you are happy with your machine now. It will serve you well.

fraydknot12326 06-28-2011 09:13 AM

I didn't stop reading there, MTS ..... but I sure had to go back and re-read it!

Wow! what a great dealer, is all I can say. He definitely deserves the free advertising!!

bearisgray 06-28-2011 10:23 AM

Don't you just hate it when it's "operator error"?

Glad the dealer helped set things right for you.

AWESOME!

eastermarie 06-28-2011 01:40 PM

I can't believe he makes "house calls"! He is one of a kind.

wishfulthinking 06-28-2011 03:44 PM

That's what I was thinking too!! My VET doesn't even make house calls!!

So glad to hear everything worked out for you!!

I have a Janome 6500 and an open toe darning foot. I have a nick inside that was pulling up the threads towards the end of the quilting process. Is that related to your story at all?

wannaquilt1 06-28-2011 04:36 PM

yes I am very lucky, he came to my house and even brought the Janome 3160 along just in case i wanted to keep that one instead since it's a brand new machine and would be the same price. Isn't he awesome? I guess it's someting with being in the south... you know southern hospitality and such. I'm very lucky. I came here 3 yrs ago from Cleveland Ohio so it really is a new world for me. No one went out of their way to be helpful there so I'm still getting used to how nice things are here :)

Doreen 06-28-2011 07:04 PM

you are blessed!

dublb 06-28-2011 07:42 PM

I'm so happy for you!!!

jaciqltznok 06-28-2011 08:13 PM

I just LOVE your dealer...what a man....glad you are all set to FMQ...will be watching for pix!

Dee G 06-29-2011 03:12 AM

Glad you found out the problem. What a great dealer!!

davis2se 06-29-2011 03:23 AM

How funny. I had a similar experience a few weeks ago with my Janome 11000. I was having a heck of time with embroidery - the bobbin thread kept pulling to the top. I finally gave up and took it in to the shop. I was using the quilting foot instead of the embroidery foot. We changed the foot and the embroidery was once again perfect. I really, really, really need to check the book every time I start a new project!!!

onthemove 06-29-2011 04:16 AM

I've been to this store. They are a distance for me but it is huge compared to the one I have in my tiny town. LOVE your shop and the people working there are so helpful. Good to know it hasn't changed. Enjoy the quilting!

s3wbusy 06-29-2011 04:22 AM

So glad you got some help with your machine. I love my 6500. I bought it several years ago and love the brand. I ended up replacing my serger with a Janome and then bought a Janome Gem Platinum 720 to take for teaching. So as you can see, I am hooked on Janomes.

franc36 06-29-2011 05:15 AM

Thanks for giving the name of the quilt store. I once lived in Mt. Pleasant, SC and go back to visit often. Next time I'm there, I'm going to Summerville. A dealer that will go to your home when you have a problem with your achine makes me want to spend some of my quilting dollars with him. Can't wait to visit the store!

On my Janome 10001, the correct foot to use is always shown in the Machine window -- no need to look in the book.

I've had one for 25 years. Don't know what I'd do without him.

mar32428 06-29-2011 06:12 AM

Forgot to add. Ain't that Janome 6500 a pure dream?

 Yahoo!!

ButtermilkMama 06-29-2011 08:26 AM

WOW, that wouldn't happen in Wisconsin!!!!

annieb 06-29-2011 09:04 AM

I absolutely love People Places and Quilts!! I travel for a living and do a show in Charlston the first of May, just in time for their anniversary sale. I always go to the Summerville shop as it is easy to get to and parking isn't a problem. I love the staff there, they are so knowlegeable
(did I even come close to spelling that right?) and friendly. Lucky you, living close enough to take classes there! They probably won't remember me, but tell them the 2 ladies from Arkansas said hello!

sunkistmi 06-29-2011 12:20 PM

Your dealer is one of a kind although we found everyone very, very kind and gracious when we were in the Charleston area for my breast cancer surgery. Still have the "Charleston" fabric I bought to make a quilt commemorating the occasion. Really got to get going on it. So glad you love the area where you live. It is very beautiful.

vickimc 06-29-2011 01:26 PM

you are right, he is great. I know him too. I am in Orangeburg. glad you like your machine now. I have a 6600 and love it.

stichinluvr 06-29-2011 01:39 PM

Sure wish I had your dealer. Mine may speak and may ignore me. After $5000 spent on machines I think speaking would be nice.

That's funny. I moved to NE Ohio 4 years ago from NH

MargeD 06-29-2011 03:22 PM

I'm glad you got your problem fixed and I'm even more surprised that your dealer makes house calls. However, part of a good business is customer service and keeping the customer happy. One unhappy customer can spell the death knell for any business. Happy quilting from now on out.

newestnana 06-29-2011 03:45 PM

I have the Janome 6600 (which should operate the same as the 6500 when FMQing) and I was told that I could use the open-toed plastic darning foot for FMQing (it came with the machine) with no adjustments or the metal circular FMQ foot (purchased separately). However, when using the latter it's crucial to set the height adjustment correctly (trial and error???) or else the thread keeps breaking.

My dealer (50 miles away) not only doesn't make house calls, but likes to charge for everything and/or upsell me to another/different machine. You have a dream dealer :-)

connie d 06-29-2011 06:31 PM

I am so glad it worked out so well for you.:):):)

Dee 06-29-2011 08:55 PM

Happy all worked out.

oh how nice that you have fabric to commemorate the occasion! It really is so pretty here, I feel really blessed that we moved here. It's very nostalgic.
