Well ladies this morning I was working hard on the king size rag quilt that my son hired me to complete for a friends birthday. I was sewing very nicely on a long row thinking I was doing well. Well to my surprise when I reached the end to snip the thread. There was no bobbin thread. I had been sewing almost the entire row without the bobbin thread without noticing. All pins were gone and rows not sewn together. What a bummer. I had to re-pin almost the entire row and start over. I sure wish I had a red light or something to warn me of the empty bobbin. So I just stopped went to Hancock for sewing machine oil and thread. Then back home to clean machine and fill the bobbin to begin again.
lol...I did the exact same thing last night
Must be somthing in the air. I did that today.
I only did about half a row before realizing the bobbin was empty!
Some one suggested using a full bobbin in both the top and bottom of your machine. Thus, you would know when the bottom bobbin is getting empty by the bobbin on the top. Just a thought:)
I have done that too. I know its a bummer when you take it out and notice its not sewn. add me to the club too. Smiles to you.

Another member here.... been there..done that.... and sit with my mouth agape for at least a minute or two! ;-)
Oh boy! I have done this many times...
My new machine has an empty bobbon reminder but when I got the featherweight I had that problem. I've noticed the FW sounds different when there's no bobbin thread so I usually don't get too far. I have to say I like Charlene's solution - take a break and go to the fabric store. Sometimes you just need to clear your mind and start fresh.
Maybe the quilting gods were looking out for you. Perhaps they knew you weren't going to sew that row as well as you needed to so they emptied your bobbin for you so now when you do it again, it will be perfect and you will not have had to rip out all those stitches:D
I did that last night, too. On the Elna, I can tell by a slight difference in sound, but on my vintage Singer. I can't. Course, she is a little noisier than the bigger machine.
I learned that the hard way too so now before i start a strip of sewing i Always check the bobbin and have another ready to go :!:
Happens to me all the time.
My machine beeps at me, and when this one beeps, there is only a smidge of thread left on the bobbin.
Your bobbin thread is sentient. It holds a grudge. It knows what you did last summer. It will take its revenge by running out just as you reach the centermost topstitching on the two-year project you’ve been working on for your perfectionist mother-in-law who, by rights, shouldn’t have vision that perfect at her age anyway.
It will laugh at you. Just don’t retaliate because the sewing needles will return fire. If they can’t skewer you they’ll throw themselves across the train tracks. You know. For the Gipper. |
one machine lets me know when bobbin is low but when I'm working on my other machine, I often stitch along with no thread.....so frustrating. chocolate is my comfort:_)
Mine beeps, but when it does, there is still a lot of thread left, so I am now in the habit of not paying attention to it, and yep, I run out and keep sewing.
That happened to me today.
I wish I was not such a potty mouth when it happens to me!
I hate when that happens....if I am listening REALLY carefully while sewing, I can hear that my bobbin is about empty...sort of a metal echo sound...but if I am listening to music, or talking while sewing, I don't hear that sound, and then I often sew with no thread.
Welcome to the club! |
Trudy Hughes once spoke at a guild meeting and told us she had a record of sewing the longest with no bobbin thread......45 minutes!
I swear I'd have slit my throat. Jan in VA  |
Today I was sewing last border on my quilt and thought its done and I had run out of bobbin 3 ins from the top. What a shock.
You would think I would check the bobbin more often. The cover is clear. LOL! Did the same thing the other day.
My pfaff has a low bobbin light that comes on and spoils me! Then when I switch over to a different machine, I forget to watch. Went almost 2 feet today with no bobbin thread. Just glad DH wasn't home, he would still be laughing at me!
I too have done this many times but with me it is usually with-in 1to2 inches from finish end. LOL
One of my machines beeps, the others don't. Needless to say I can be part of this club!
I'll join! It happens to me almost daily.

Been there done that, more than once. |
One of my machines, my Brother, has a warning signal when the bobbin is low. It has saved me many times. But my other machines, a White and a different Brother, don't have them. Guess which machine I use the most?
My Janome beeps when the bobbin gets half empty, and then it beeps until it runs out. I find it a bit annoying. I would like for it to remind me, but it beeps too soon. I think there may be a way to reset it, but I haven'tfound that out yet. I always look when I'm embroidering so that I have enough to finish the design as it's bad when I run out and have to reset the pattern to where I was when it ran out.
My embroidery machine has a warning beep but there is usaully enough thread left to finish the project unless I am just starting.
I often run out of bobbin thread in the middle of quilting my Linus quilts. It is so annoying to think you have finished only to discover you were sewing along for nothing. I think we have all been there done that. |
I don't really find this to be a problem. I can tell immediately if I am out of bobbin thread. Never sew more than an inch or two without bobbin thread. My 301a feels and sounds different. I always keep a full bobbin on my bobbin winder.
I just don't find this to be such a big deal, just another part of the process. |
I should be the President of the club! Happens to me all of the time. I hate it when it happens.

I don't have an empty bobbin warning light, but my machine will fill 5-6 bobbibs in 5 mins.....so I always have a bunch ready to go.Like you, if there's a heavy duty sewing marathon coming up....I start with a full bobbin.

My Bernina has a bobbin reminder. Problem: sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
