I so enjoy reading everything I can on here. The variety and sincerity of answers amaze me. The biggest relief I get is that no one seems to have THE ANSWER.
Prewash? Yes, definately. No, never. Depends. Fleece backing? Of course, do it all the time. No way, no how! Quilting? Hand, of course. Machine fancy. Machine plain. Tie the thing! What a relief that is! Personally I look for the answer that affirms what I wanted to do anyway and deem it the RIGHT answer! I've decided that we are all on a journey with our quilts. Some of us are in different stages of the journey; others are traveling different roads; some travel solo; some travel in groups - but, we are all headed the same place. A place that allows our creativity to flourish, our families to be warmed, and our love to show. How cool is that? |
Very cool! Thanks for sharing. My sentiments as well.
That is cool! No matter what the journey the quilts all turn out beautifully! Thanks for voicing this!
What a great way to look at it!
Brilliant assessment!!! But what an exciting journey!!
I like it!
I couldn't agree more!!
I think the greatest thing here is that we all realize we are not alone on this crazy journey. My grandson laughed his head off when I told him I had joined a "chat room" as he called it. He said, "Oh no! Grannie is going to be too busy to sew for us now that she is addicted to the computer!" He is 16 and is not allowed to join facebook or any of the others. But seriously, I have learned so much here now that I have all these new "friends".
Good analogy. What I love about this board is that on quite a few occasions, my journey was heading down a rocky path and some helpful soul headed me off at the pass and sent me on a better way. I hope I can do that for someone else along the way.

This is how I feel about all of this:
Wonderful description. I love it when someone agrees with me and get the answer I wanted. But also learn when they don't. Can't believe all the things I never thought of.
Course, as a newbie the number of "Wow! I never thought of that!" moments is HUGE. My first two quilts were sandwiched by taping the backing to the floor and crawling around for what felt like hours. Quilt number three was clamped to a table. No more floor for me! I've bound each of them a different way - happier with each one than the one before. My choice to accept "Good enough" and "Finished is better than Perfect" is due to the encouragement I find here. Hopefully my level of acceptance will rise with each quilt, but at least I'm getting them DONE! I have two more tops that are finished and now that I know I'm not going to be crawling and that they will be loved even with flaws I'm ready to move on down the road!
Oooh I love how you put it. So true, very insightful! Thank you!!
yes, I just love this quilting board site and have learned alot from all of you!

What a wonderful way to say it!!
I agree also. I've never experienced such "instant" friendship. And someone always has an answer (or 2 or 3!) for you. It's like finding a whole other world!
I must say I enjoy the journey, and while I realize my "right" answers apply only to me, I do hold that they are the correct and true ones!

I enjoy reading and trying all of the new methods, techniques and styles shown here. I so appreciate that there are very few rules... and those few have really saved my bacon after reading/learning of them here :D:D:D |
Wonderfully said. My thoughts too!
and every chance i get, i pass along this 'chat room' to another quilter. 2 in the last couple weeks.
"Finished is better than Perfect"
This is a philosophy I can embrace. |
Is there any other quilting forum on the web?
When I "surf" it's always here first and then on to a couple of political sites I enjoy. (I do have priorities!) My friends and family always chuckle when I tell them "that" joke came from the Quilting Board. Agreement with the sentiments and kudos to everyone for their consideration, confirmation, and confidence that we're all on a journey to make our respective worlds more beautiful. Our quilts/ wallhangings / pot holders/ etc., are all testimony, stories, and talismans for those who follow us. Isn't it great to snuggle with a scrappy quilt that great-grandma made? Her hands touched the same fabric that is wrapped around me. Our hands are wonderful things. Put a needle and thread in them and were "Back to the Future". |
You put that so well. I'm glad to be on this journey with you.
Yep, we all quilt diffretly, but in a GREAT way!
Amen to that! Very well put.
beautifully said. Inspiring, even! Any time we think of a piece of our lives as a Journey, we suddenly pay more attention. We stop just being out there, Doing. Instead, we become aware that we are on a path, moving through a garden of our own making. Thanks for the inspirational moment. :-)
I agree. It seems like I learn something new every day from the posters here. It's a very relaxing time just scrolling thru the board to see what others are doing.Doesn't matter where you're from, all quilters welcome.
I think what works for one person may not work for another. I do prewash reds, browns and some greens. When I finish a quilt I always wash it, so add a dye magnet to the washer and use synthrapol in the water. Rarely have trouble with fabrics bleeding when doing this. I really like your idea of picking the hints that fit your sewing.

I am a 'Jan" from Huntsville Texas. Have a good week
Variety is the spice of life. If we all did it one way.... it would be a boring world and we wouldn't be open to trying new things. Good observance on things. Never let it be said that ,"I did it my way!!!!!!"hehehehe
This board and all of you are my BFF :P . I have learned so much and do enjoy reading everything. And I've found out that there is no one right way to do anything. It's whatever works for you!
How marvelous you said the one thing that really hit me. We are not only on our way with the quilting, but also with our lives. That is what living is all about. Blessings!
The journey, that's exactly what I refer to it as when people are working on a project. Take your time, &, enjoy the journey. It's not a race, & not even a competition, really. This is suppose to be fun, something we do for us, no matter where the finished quilt ends up. This I do for me, & my soul. Any preferences & how we all choose to accomplish this, is any individuals own choice. It is all about the journey, so trust your instincts, & or, the knowledge you gather, & make sure you enjoy it! I have to agree with the one who started this topic, all in all, it's pretty cool, so enjoy!
That's the wonderful thing about doing "artsy" stuff! Whatever you want to do is perfectly all right! Love it!
I agree and have learned so much already. Thank you everyone.
I am on two other boards, but I don't look forward to them like I do this one. Now I've got to figure out how to get off them. Yes, sewing/quilting is a journey and aren't you glad it's different for each of us. That's how I learn. What you like/do may not be what I like/do, but it's makes me more creative to think out side my box.
SWEET !!!!!!
Well said!!
I love how you put that and totally agree with it. We're all on a journey and that's what it's all about. Enjoy!
It's true that some things work for one person and not for another. I think sometimes we are looking for confirmation that what we THINK will work will actually work. And other times, we don't have a clue how to do something and need input from several people who have done it.
