I've seen the June Tailor Shape Cut ruler at Joann's and have even picked it up top buy it, but am unsure how much I'd use it. Who has this, and do you really like it?

QuiltingGrannie 09-05-2010 06:55 PM

I have one. Once I started using it I was in love with it. Now I want the bigger one.
You will use it more than you think. Good investment. Go for it!

charismah 09-05-2010 06:57 PM

I use mine all of the time...I can't imagine not having it!

stefanib123 09-05-2010 06:58 PM

My local Walmart has both the smaller one and the bigger one. I'm going to get the bigger one, I think.

The smaller has more markings on it, though, for the half square triangles.

Sadiemae 09-05-2010 07:04 PM

A lot of people use it, I cannot even remember where mine is. I guess I don't use it much!

gale 09-05-2010 07:09 PM

I bought mine when they first came out and never used it until I started reading here about how everyone loves theirs.

What is this?

Here's a link to what one looks like. You can see the teardrop shapes at the top and bottom of the ruler. You put your rotary cutter into those teardrop shapes and cut. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-63070-1.htm

I have 2 and use both of them frequently. It is amazing how handy they come in and I find they are a real timesaver.

nursie76 09-05-2010 08:19 PM

I have the small and the large one. Love them both!

akrogirl 09-05-2010 08:31 PM

I have all the versions and they have been life savers for me, since I am still quite the klutz with a rotary cutter.

AudreyB 09-05-2010 08:36 PM

I have used them for many years and am on my third one (they break when you step on them), I have all sizes and can't imagine quilting without one. WalMart has them as does Hobby Lobby and other stores. I consider them a value at list price, but if you can use a coupon it's even better.

There is different types i also found out!! So read it before you buy it..... Theres 1/8th. 1/4's and 2 1/2 increment PER mat. I bought the 1/4 since it seams to be the avg, size. Joanns has them 50% off thru Mon Labor Day!!

scowlkat 09-05-2010 10:49 PM

I have two and use them frequently but with caution. I have to cut sitting down due to disability and if you don't hold your cutter completely upright you can actually nudge the sections and make your strip have that dreaded curve effect. Once you are aware of the possibility and pay attention, they are wonderful tools!

QuiltingQueen 09-06-2010 03:08 AM

Love it.... wouldn't quilt without it! I have worn out several!

sewcrafty 09-06-2010 03:29 AM

I've had mine since they first came out. Its almost exclusively what I use. I wouldn't think of cutting up my blocks any other way. Slice and dice in one direction, pick up and slice and dice in other direction. TADAH!!!

In fact, I even purchased the one with 1/4" on it. My absolute favorite quilting notion!!!

Dee Dee 09-06-2010 04:17 AM

Sounds great! What size is the best to start with?

Joeysnana 09-06-2010 04:27 AM

I have the larger one. For longer yardage do you fold it several times? Won't it get wonky?

Dee Dee 09-06-2010 04:40 AM

Joanns for half price sounds great!

Lynnejean 09-06-2010 05:52 AM

Bought both sizes and use them ALL the time. Its a good investment.

Same here.............

BellaBoo 09-06-2010 07:43 AM

I use mine to square up bigger blocks. The 1/4" cut size is the best for this. You can't just place the ruler on fabric and cut without practice. Aligning the 0 cutting slot extended line to the edge of the fabric and the bottom measuring line across the fold will give you accurate cuts every time. I cut cheap muslin until I got the hang of it.

ann clare 09-06-2010 10:07 AM

Use the large ruler. Love it.

SHayes 09-06-2010 10:29 AM

I have worn out 2 Shape Cuts, just bought a new one last week! I love using mine!

Wow...I have a coupon for 20% off regular or sale items. Guess I'd better get dressed!

me too
I was going to buy one recently only to discover I had one, still wrapped in plastic from several years back.
Needed it, opened it and have not stopped using.

Dee Dee 09-06-2010 12:06 PM

I am used to a regular 6" wide 24" long ruler. It appears that on the video you have to fold the width of the fabric smaller than the regular fold-in-half, the way it comes from the quilt shop. Is that correct?

Me, too, but I don't want a BIGGER one, I want a SMALLER one! It's sometimes awkward to cut small pieces with the 12". 6" -8" would be really handy!

CoventryUK 09-06-2010 01:14 PM

I use it all the time!!! Essential tool!!!!

emt2004 09-06-2010 02:09 PM

Thanks for the reminder, I just ran out and purchased the 1/4, I'm so glad I went and got it at 50% off plus the 10% I got it for 12.99.............Michele

np3 09-06-2010 04:05 PM

Word of warning.....

If you don't hold the rotary cutter perfectly straight, you will not have perfect cuts the way the video shows, especially if you go that fast. I had a slight tilt of my hand and the cuts were off.

dsb38327 09-06-2010 04:06 PM

I have the smaller one. I would not be tempted to cut without it. It changed my entire outlook on quilting and opened a door of freedome and excitement for me. I do not dread cutting my strips, squares, and squaring off anymore. No, I couldn't do without mine.

Kitsie 09-06-2010 04:45 PM

Mine has the 1/4" marking on it too. If yours doesn't, just draw with a permanent marker or tape a mark 1/4" to the left of the "0" slit.

Dee Dee 09-06-2010 04:51 PM

I saw a large Shape Cut at my LQS today and it was $36. Is that a typical price for it?

sewmuchmore 09-06-2010 04:53 PM

If you have a Hobby Lobby go online and get there 40% off then you can purchase the large one for about $16.00 dollars.

Dee Dee 09-06-2010 04:56 PM

$16.99 sounds ever so much better than $36!!!

Yep that's around the price. Some places online I found slightly less, but ot mine from Joann's online with 40% off and there was also free shipping at the time I got it, so it was cheaper over all. They didn't have the large one at the brick and mortar store.
