The green is a "muddy neutral." The theory is that it's muddiness is a foil for the other colors, makiing them brighter.
Mary Ellen Hopkins always used to say that "every quilt needs muddies."

Try staring at the very center of the quilt yet relaxing your eyes at the same time and see if this technique isn't valid. :D I think it's brilliant!

I see your point, Jan, but I still don't think I could use that shade of green in a quilt of mine....

wvdek 09-06-2011 07:08 PM

When I first saw this I thought it was very peaceful, unlike any pattern I had rever seen, and it was 'edgy' with the argyle pattern on the border.
I read all the comments and then I read Jan in VA's idea, so I did it. Within moments, it looked as if the center was moving to the back of the quilt or moving away from me and getting smaller. Next thing I knew, my eyes were so relaxed I was looking at the inside of my lids and nodding.
The hues of each color were matched up pretty good IMHO. I still think it is lovely and I don't care for avacado green. I remember appliances, a car, and carpet that color, too.

I agree.

Too much Mud for me.

Greenheron 09-06-2011 08:29 PM

It doesn't ring MY bell.

jitkaau 09-07-2011 04:29 AM

I really like it and would use it as my carpet is blue and would welcome the quilt.

Oh-oh, sounds like the quilt police !! I don't think I have any muddies in any of my quilts, guess I will be going to the Big House for a long time!

I don't know, olive green and purple? I would love to see it in shades of blue. I don't know anyone whose bedroom is done in shades of olive green and purple.

I was looking through the new Keepsake catalog and noticed a lot of quilt kits, etc in colors that make me go bleh....

Am I being oldfashioned? Are these the new modern colors? I'm not even going to mention the price...

For me, I just don't like the pattern, too busy. Maybe if the white wasn't so white as to make those blah colors jump out at you. There wasn't much in their new catalog that peaked my interest.

AprilG 09-07-2011 04:33 AM

I like the color combination, however, I have no place to put such a combo nor, do any of my friends. But the colors go together well (I think they do anyway).

redeagle 09-07-2011 04:34 AM

What color would you suggest in place of the green? Gold, orange?

dewie45 09-07-2011 04:45 AM

Well, it seems it isn't "just you" however, I think some of us like a lot of different olives too. I suspect the actual quilt would have more life than the picture.

I am partial to greens myself, and while I love to look at blues and purples, they are not colors I am comfortable to live with. I think think it is very interesting how color can affect us individually, don't you?

are you kidding?.....who does that kind of stupid thing? Never in my life heard of doing that.

Reminds me of our first apartment, a two-room efficiency fully furnished. There was this butt-ugly hide-a-bed in the living room/bedroom. The landlady said we could toss it to give us more space. Except we couldn't get it through the door... or the window. Turns out they built the apartment around the furniture! Took a sledgehammer to get it apart. But to put walls on top of carpet?!? That's just plain stupid.

Now, as for the QUILT. Keep the blues/purples, trade the greens for something else... pinks? No, green... just something brighter & springier (is that a word?lol). It's a gorgeous pattern, and you're just the quilter to tackle it. Can't wait to see your take.

Pieces2 09-07-2011 04:56 AM

Doesn't look like a color combo I would make either.

Bren 09-07-2011 04:57 AM

You could just send it to me then you wouldn' t have to look at that ugly old thing! Seriously, I love, love those colors and the pattern and your piercing are phonomal. I think it is a fabulous quilt. Guess I'm in the minority. I really hope it "grows on you" since you have so much time and money invested in it.

joycecil 09-07-2011 04:57 AM

This is not bad. Everyone to their own.

Robinmg 09-07-2011 04:59 AM

Hate the green part.

patdesign 09-07-2011 05:00 AM

there are no bad colors, only colors that we do not like in that application, or are not our favorites. Think about a lot of the Baltimore applique quilts and the colors in them, olive green would be right at home.:)

VaNella 09-07-2011 05:07 AM

I think the colors and pattern are beautiful, but others would be nice as well.

Homespun 09-07-2011 05:08 AM

You could just buy the pattern if you like it and change the colors to whatever you want!

eparys 09-07-2011 05:08 AM

I agree - just blah... Although I am an avid fan of blue, when paired with that color green, it makes me ill.

And Gramie bj - what a nice age that is - as I too remember those icky colors together as well!!

Julia 09-07-2011 05:32 AM

This is a Dereck Lockwood pattern and I love it and as soon as he releases the pattern to the public, it will be in my grubby little hands. I don't buy kits, so will just have to wait a while.
I have not decided on all the colors yet, but the more you study it the more it grows on you.

lillybeck 09-07-2011 05:33 AM

I guess I am weird because I like it. I would never make it because it is to complex for me. I do think it would lool lovely in many other colors.

hoppa 09-07-2011 05:41 AM

not a fan of the olive green perhaps a different shade but do like the pattern

grannypat7925 09-07-2011 05:44 AM

I don't like those two colors together. Most of the time I adapt the pattern to what I have on hand in my stash. If that is old fashioned, then that's what I am.

mimee4 09-07-2011 05:45 AM

Only the young. My niece wants a quilt of lime green, purple and zebra!

KandyDG 09-07-2011 05:46 AM

Purple & green is one of my most fav combos - but not those particular shades. The quilt design is gorgeous though it would take me years to complete. My heart actually starts beating faster when I find a Keepsake catalog in the mailbox. LOL

Sewlmatesister 09-07-2011 05:57 AM

I love it! LOL

BarbZ 09-07-2011 05:58 AM

I HAPPEN TO LIKE IT A LOT!!!! I LIKE MOST SHADES OF GREEN ANYWAY. VERY PRETTY

cuppi duke 09-07-2011 06:03 AM

I really like the color combination. I think sometimes we get hung up on certain colors and don't like to go outside the box. But then I am more of a contemporary quilter. I love the bright colors.

GramaLaura 09-07-2011 06:35 AM

Shades of blue and yellow would be awesome! :-D

Jan in VA 09-07-2011 07:01 AM

double

Polliwog 09-07-2011 07:04 AM

Merchandising trends affect quilting patterns/fabrics. The store owners are in the selling business. Next year there will be new combinations of fabric designs and colors. Remind your local store owners of your preferences. After all, you won't buy it if it doesn't work for you.

Design principles are hardly quilt police! LOL!
Surely just because one doesn't agree with someone or something doesn't mean the one they are differing with is wrong/'opinionated'/demanding/critical/judgemental or any other negative description.

A principle is a principle whether we use it or like it or agree with it. We can consciously use design principles in our quilts to help us choose colors or shapes or overall design, or we can 'wing it' on our personal emotions, which is what the largest majority of us do (me included). Either works for quilts that are loved.

Neither I nor Mary Ellen Hopkins are the quilt police. (Is she still alive now?) Absolutely no judgement was meant on my part; I just happen to like the way the idea was used.
Do I always do it in MY quilts? Nope.
Do I even always remember it? Nope.
Does that matter? Double NOPE! 8-)

Yuk on the green!! Didn't like it when I was little either!
Pretty pattern, but would use a very different green.

Design principles are valid, and it never hurts to be aware of what the underlying ones are. It DOES not mean that when someone offers up a principle that they are being "the quilt police". The pattern is nice, it is complex, would I make it for myself in those colors? Probably not but that is what makes quilting such fun, I can apply design principles from color theory and replace the colors with those that I might like better, WITH confidence. :-D

Glenda Kay 09-07-2011 07:31 AM

That's why I don't do kits. I like to choose the colors. I go through different cycles. Yellows for awhile, then greens, then browns, etc. As for the kit you showed, I don't really dislike the colors, they are kind of pretty but a different combination may have been prettier.

nitza 09-07-2011 09:07 AM

I like a muted yellowish green and purple. they actually complement each other on the color wheel. You do have to be cafeful of the shades though.

snicktrain 09-07-2011 09:30 AM

I like the colors but not the pattern so much. It makes my eyes cross. Too busy for my old eyes.

busygranny 09-07-2011 09:53 AM

I lived thru the avacado and orange colors, HATED them. Never had the combination in my house and never would. I really don't like "Designers" telling me what colors I need. I know what I like and that is what I live with. I had blue and mauve long before it became stylish, and I still have those colors in my house. They make me feel good and that's the kind of colors I live with.
