I like a quilt big enough that two people can share so the cover hog doesn't appropriate the whole thing. All our bed covers are people covers.
I use bedskirts, so the quilts drape down to the top of the box spring. The quilts are used as blankets so floor length would be too heavy.
I make them a bit longer than the mattress because once you get two people under it, I do not feel like I get enough covers! But it's still short enough to need a bed skirt.
I'm making one now that just fits the top of the bed. I want is longer and wider so I'm adding borders--easy solution.

I bought a beautiful white quilt with embroidery, the type you can find for sale occasionally at Cracker Barrel. It tucked under the pillows and hung to the floor. It's just lovely and I put it on the bed...so proud. and then I tried to sleep under it and it was so heavy my feet bent backwards if I was on my back. What a shame...it's been rolled up in a pillow case and stored since 2006.

I like mine to hang to just below the bottom of the mattress. I use neutral colored bedskirts on my beds, so changing quilt colors isn't a problem!
I bought a bed skirt from Walmart in off white so it goes with whatever quilt or comforter I have on the bed.
I have a platform bed, so no box springs, but in my guest room I just have a straight box pleat skirt, it is very neutral and goes with everything
personally i like them to drape about 4 inches over the mattress , other wise i feel smothered in the quilt , also i like a bedskirt with the quilt

I would like to make them floor length, but we have old beds and sits up too high. Almost need a step stool to get in them as they are. I am happy if they hang over the edge and then some. No matter how deep I make the borders, they still just hang over the edge. I am usually happy to get them done and happy they cover the bed.
