I am interested in doing the Fiesta BOM and I need 9 yards of black. I wonder if anyone knows of an online going out of business sale where I can get this much yardage at a good price. I think I want Kona solid black.
TIA
Rita

Not going out of business but Hancock's of Paducah and Keepsake Quilting both carry the Kona black. Just in case you don't find someplace else.

Susy 01-08-2011 12:42 PM

Also, Daystyle Designs (Leah Day)is having an on-line sale and is going out of Kona black.

Try Fabric Depot :D:D:D

Maride 01-08-2011 12:55 PM

Kona black is cheap already. You should find it anywhere for under $6 per yard. I would get it locally because anywhere else you have to pay shipping and that eats up your savings. Unless you find free shipping... Try to get all at the same time. Their lots don't always match.

justwannaquilt 01-08-2011 12:55 PM

Joann's has 50% off coupons starting next week. If you were to use one of those you could get the fabric for 2.99 a yard instead of 5.99. which would make nine yards of fabric 27.00! I have a coupon code if you would like.

Sorry just looked there are several coupons and they start on the 16th there is one
50%off runs 16-20 DFSE20
50%off runs 21-22 DFSE22
50%off runs 23-29 DFS29
40%off runs now through the 29th DES29

Keepsake Quilting offers an Amish black for $6 a yard. I use it a lot. Like it better than Kona.

leonajo 01-08-2011 01:07 PM

hancock has black kona on sale for 3.99( I think, ) online today/ Sunday.

ritamaew 01-08-2011 01:59 PM

I was planning to do a Joanns coupon but in doing a search I found that Joanns Kona is not the same as quilt shop quality and it is less than the standard 40-42inch width. Am I being a snob about this ? Is this information accuate? I hate to work for a year and have an inferior product because of low quality materials.

According to the kaufman company (who posted here about it) the stuff at Joann's is exactly the same. I haven't found it to be narrower either. And I'm a snob (readily admit to that) but if Joann's has the Kona colors I need, I buy it there. Just be sure to check the bolt end to make sure it really is Kona. I think it's regularly $5.99.

Hi Rita,
sorry I cannot help you with the answer. I love the Fiesta BOM and was thinking on doing it. I actually printed the pattern for Block 1- question: how do you check that the patterns are printing at the right size?
Andrea

The Kona at our Joann's has a Robert Kaufman label on the end. I have both the Kona from Joann's and from Hancock's of Paducah and I can't tell any difference.

No, not at My JoAnn's it isn't. You can see your hand through it. If you buy at least one yard at Hancock's of Paducah you get a 20% quantity discount...works out to be 4.78 per yard.

Kona is a registered brand by Robert Kaufman. Anything that is not Kaufman shouldn't be labeled Kona. There is another line of fabrics called Kona Bay, but they are mainly Asian fabrics. In some places when you search for Kona it takes you to a Broadcloth that sells for $1.69 per yard and the fabric is 60 inches wide. This fabric is great for some purposes, but doesn't compare to Kaufman's Kona.

Fabaddict 01-08-2011 05:07 PM

Joanns carries it - use a coupon and get it at a reduced price

I prefer Michael Miller JET to Kona for holding the black dye!

Kaufman posted here that all Kona brand cotton is the same.

I am well aware of everything that you say, Maride. I am also well aware that what is advertised as Kona solids sold at the JoAnn's Fabrics and Crafts in my locale and perhaps others, is not in fact, manufactured by Robert Kaufman Fabrics. The Kaufman name and logo do NOT appear on the bolts and the product is NOT referred to as Kona COTTON solids. Trademark infringement or not, it is what is being done. I do not believe Kaufman produces a lesser quality product for sale to chain stores, but I do believe there is 'knock-off' KonaŽ Cotton Solids on the market.

No, that is not what he said. Read it again. He said all KonaŽ Cotton Solids manufactured by Robert Kaufman Fabrics are the same. The stuff being sold without the Kaufman label as Kona solids is simply not manufactured by Kaufman.

gale 01-08-2011 09:50 PM

The stuff at our joann's has the kaufman label.

RkayD 01-08-2011 09:54 PM

no, you are not being a snob for wanting a good quality fabric for your quilt. You are right, if you are going the work such
a long time on a quilt, you want good quality fabric in it.

I just ordered 5 yards of Kona black from The Fabric
Shack. They had it for $4.19 a yard and they have
half price shipping. You can order up to $75.00 worth
of fabric and the shipping is only $2.50. My 5 yards,
including shipping is only $23.45 and it is quilt shop only
quality. I love The Fabric Shack and order from them often.
They are fast, and their prices can't be beat. The link to
the Kona is below.

Kona carries 'black' and 'jet black'. Jet black is more expensive, but it's a more saturated color. The regular black looks almost grey next to it, although by itself and other colors, it's fine. Just be aware of this when you order.

ditto, love the stuff from keepsake

catrancher 01-09-2011 10:15 AM

This shop has inexpensive Kona solids. I've done business with them before, and they are very good:

Jbarrow 01-09-2011 10:21 AM

That is why I don't do Joann's or any other non quilting shop fabric any more...and ever the quilt shops, you have to make sure that they buy quality fabric...have seen some shops, smaller ones, that maybe skimp because of price...Stick to someone you believe in...you will be happier in the end

bajmiller 01-09-2011 11:57 AM

How do you use the coupon numbers you listed?
