Me, too. For me, labels are like having my mother's recipes written in her own hand. I put a lot of history on my quilt labels--someone, somewhere, sometime may want to know a lot about that quilt. froggyintexas

I use a stencil and draw a design to be written in---use a black perm. marker and write on the quilt itself so it cannot be removed.

It seems like there is a lot of waste. It is very costly to waste that much.

If you set up the printing options to have very large margins on one side and the top or bottom you can force it to print exactly where you want it on the page. Be sure to do a test print on plain paper first. You will have to do four at a time because usually once you cut off part of the sheet your printer will reject the partial sheet or worse yet, jam it up.

Another option is to look for MGI Photosuite, if that's still being made. It was an inexpensive printing program that had the best interface I've seen for letting you size and print things exactly where you want them on a page.

If a quilt is going to get a lot of washing, such as a baby quilt, I think it would be best to get an embroidered label. Permanent inks aren't quite as permanent as we'd like, in my experience.

Having absolutely no knowledge of how labels should be done, this is what I do, too! So glad to see I'm not the only one.

I remember some complaints about the washability of spoonflower fabrics. One person did some tests and took pictures showing how badly it faded if washed in warm water. If it wasn't for that I would have bought some there too. Hopefully that has improved.

I sign mine with a permanent ink pen on muslin - or sometimes on the backing.

I used to make my own using pre-treated fabric - several different brands and even fabric treated with Bubble Jet set. However, over time, with repeated washing the labels have faded until they are illegible. However, the label where I hand printed using Pigma micron pens is still legible.

I have an embroidery machine which is wonderful for labels, before then, I used my Janome sewing machine that has letters that I could sew on a piece of fabric for a label.

I found some on Ebay. 15 very nice printed labels for about $8.00 I use permanent markers on them.

I also like to make my labels by hand embroidering them. Adds a personal, personal touch to it.
