Will try to think where

Wouldn't this be a nice block exchange idea?

Just seen another posting on this awhile back...really cute ideas and I think if you go to the top of the page where it says "search" type in "hankie quilt" you are going to see, read alot on this. However, as already comment some of the other ladies will post you some links, patterns to use. Good luck....can't image someone having that many hankies.

The magazine is STITCH'N SEW QUILTS Vol.10 May/June 1990 Number 3!! The butterfly handkerchief quilt is on the front cover I haven't yet been able to find pretty enough old handkerchieves to make it since the Kleenex tissue came into being!! Need someone to go to Singapore or Thailand for me!!!

Old magazines don't scan very well

My first Carol Doak efforts!!

My mom gave me a shoe box FULL of old hankies - most look like they have never been used - she bought them at her church rummage sale for 1¢ apiece - there were about 87 of them, best that I can remember counting! I need to find the right pattern for them - most were solid colors and not the printed, newer ones that would make nice butterflies.

Here is an Hankie Angel design that I got from my MIL years ago. I have not tried to make it yet though.

Many people have emailed me for information on making handkerchief quilts. Here are some basic instructions and a list of resources.

•Handkerchiefs are not uniform size. Therefore, they must be applied to a backing block. If the hankies for your quilt range in size from 11 inch to 14 inch, you will need to prepare backing blocks that are larger than the largest hanky plus seam allowence, or 14 1/4 inches to 15 1/2 inches.
•Prepare the backing blocks and hankys. Be sure the hankies are ironed and clean. Fold the backing blocks in half and half again, then diagonally. Open up the backing block and use the crease lines to center the hanky. Pin hanky in place.
•Apply the hanky with a whip stitch, or machine stitch it on with matching thread.
•Treat the hanky blocks as you would pieced or appliqued blocks for a quilt
