The pattern is in an old magazine that had all butterfly patterns. I'm at work so will look tonight. It will probably take me a few days to find--I have several boxes of old mags that I'm keeping for my retirement--ha ha.! I too started making butterflies with old hankies. I think I collected enough to make an all blue hankie/butterfly quilt and another with different colored hankies--so pretty.
|
I see that "up north" posted a link so I won't have to look. I guess I should get back to work.!

I am now in the process of finishing a queen size 25th Ann quilt made of linen tatted/ crocheted ladies hankies and napkins. I have machine embroidered lovely flowers and initials in the middle of most . They do not all come out even around the edge so I added lace where needed. So many are delicate and thin so hand tacked at corners and inconspicious places onto white backing. Now I have tied the entire top/batting /backing with white embroidery thread. Lots of work but for a lovely daughter. I also addedsome small crochet dolies made by my mother and a tatted hankie from her other grandma...it is a real work of memories

I have the magazine with the handkerchief butterfly pattern you're looking for but I also saw it advertized for sale in the Quitler's World newsletter this week - go to quiltersworld.com or to see latest patterns and books on offer

Wouldn't this be a nice block exchange idea?

Just seen another posting on this awhile back...really cute ideas and I think if you go to the top of the page where it says "search" type in "hankie quilt" you are going to see, read alot on this. However, as already comment some of the other ladies will post you some links, patterns to use. Good luck....can't image someone having that many hankies.

The magazine is STITCH'N SEW QUILTS Vol.10 May/June 1990 Number 3!! The butterfly handkerchief quilt is on the front cover I haven't yet been able to find pretty enough old handkerchieves to make it since the Kleenex tissue came into being!! Need someone to go to Singapore or Thailand for me!!!
Old magazines don't scan very well My first Carol Doak efforts!! |
My mom gave me a shoe box FULL of old hankies - most look like they have never been used - she bought them at her church rummage sale for 1¢ apiece - there were about 87 of them, best that I can remember counting! I need to find the right pattern for them - most were solid colors and not the printed, newer ones that would make nice butterflies.

Here is an Hankie Angel design that I got from my MIL years ago. I have not tried to make it yet though.

Here's the link to the "Mothers Hankies" if you haven't already gone there! |
Many people have emailed me for information on making handkerchief quilts. Here are some basic instructions and a list of resources.
•Handkerchiefs are not uniform size. Therefore, they must be applied to a backing block. If the hankies for your quilt range in size from 11 inch to 14 inch, you will need to prepare backing blocks that are larger than the largest hanky plus seam allowence, or 14 1/4 inches to 15 1/2 inches. •Prepare the backing blocks and hankys. Be sure the hankies are ironed and clean. Fold the backing blocks in half and half again, then diagonally. Open up the backing block and use the crease lines to center the hanky. Pin hanky in place. •Apply the hanky with a whip stitch, or machine stitch it on with matching thread. •Treat the hanky blocks as you would pieced or appliqued blocks for a quilt |

There is a book called
Hanky-Panky Crazy Quilt by Cindy Brick You can get from Amazon or www.softexpress.com cindybrick.com |
There are a lot of "Hanky" pattern books out there. I just finished a butterfly hanky quilt using my grandma, mother and my hankies. I'm now putting on the prairie point finishing binding on it. I used Leisure Arts "Antique Quilts Recreated" book.

Welcome from Clear Lake (Texas). I'm watching this link because I too have grandmother's hankies :-)
|
If you would google or do a search with "butterfly hankie quilt pattern" you would find lots of sites.
|
Yesterday I saw a quilt made out of hankies. They were butterflies and I believe they were folded in the shape of butterflies. I can't remember exactly but I think it was from E-patterns.com or quilters world. I purge most everything after I'm done so can't go back and find it. I'm pretty sure it was from one of those. They were beautiful. If I run across them again I'll let you know.

I have been interested in the same thing after returning from a trip home and acquiring 37 more to my collection. I found this pattern accidently the other day...sounds like what you want....http://www.e-patternscentral.com/det...=713&criteria=
Looks like you may have to type it in! I'm looking forward to getting it and making it, too! Sally in Florida |
