Lets play Pick the Border!!

7 Attachment(s)
Pattern is from Bonnie Hunter "Blue Ridge Beauty" (similar to Buckeye Beauty but one of the HST's is flipped) and the layout is "Barn Raising".

I know I want a light color narrow (2") inner border and a dark color wide (8") outside border. I've laid out several possibilities.

The first photo is the quilt top before it was finished ... only difference now is that it's larger and square.

Remaining photo's are border possibilities. The stripe fabric at the top is the binding. A lot of the fabrics I chose for the border are either Jacquard or Embossed.

i like the gold inner border and the dark brown outer border. great center

Mariposa 08-17-2014 12:05 PM

I vote for the second to last pic one~ and terrific center!

Tartan 08-17-2014 12:09 PM

I vote for picture 5 with the gold and brown. I love your version of Bonnie's quilt pattern!

PaperPrincess 08-17-2014 12:20 PM

The only one I don't like is the one with the camo block print.

QuiltE 08-17-2014 12:21 PM

You could always save yourself the decision ... make more blocks and go borderless!! :):)

But being that you want a border, I would go with the last two pics, which I think are the same dark border. I like the gold inner border, but definitely am intrigued by that printed inner border possibility. However, I would want to see it with more of the quilt showing, and at a distance, to really know if it were a winner or not.

Loved looking and seeing so many familiar fabrics in there ... you've got one Beauty there!

Me too. I threw it in there at the last second only because of the colors. I wouldn't call it "camo" though (I would never buy camo!), it's more like bricks.

QuiltingHaven 08-17-2014 12:23 PM

The brown and gold gets my vote. Makes your entire quilt stand out!!!

Thanks to you and a lot of other folks here on QB for the wonderful array of fabrics. Lots of them came from you (that goose is winking at you!) and lots of others came from boomerang groups and other "side swaps" with QB friends from the US, Canada, Australia, Scotland and England.

I like the gold inner border and darker outer border.

Maybe it needs a new name ... International Beauty or When Friends Sew Together or some such! I was surprised how many of mine, made it into that section of the quilt ... and yup, saw that goose winking. Maybe it was a Canada Goose, in disguise?

Anael 08-17-2014 12:54 PM

Wow DHM, that was a lot of work!!! I don't like the last one either but I do like the same outer border with the gold inner border.

Because all of the "donor counties" are English speaking countries, the name will be either "Broken English" or "An Adventure in English". haven't decided yet. "An Adventure in English" is one of my all-time favorite non-fiction books explaining the evolution of the English language. "Broken English" kind of describes the quilt though.

Yes and no ... I can say I spent far more time cutting than sewing this one because there are so many fabrics that quite a few I had to figure out the best way to cut from a cut-into scrap piece. I also did some fussy-cutting with some of the novelty prints to avoid cutting of horses heads and such. It was all chain pieced, so the piecing went fast.

The horses thank you! :D

ragamuffin 08-17-2014 04:14 PM

I would vote for a small yellow boarder and then a larger red. Try that one.

Lori S 08-17-2014 04:49 PM

I vote the second to last photo!

A vote here too, DHMom. Are you going to put the stripe on the bias? That would make a sharp looking edge!

tesspug 08-17-2014 06:44 PM

I like # 3. Beautiful quilt.

joe'smom 08-17-2014 09:09 PM

Lovely quilt! I can't quite judge the yellow inner border without seeing a longer view, but it seems as though it's a bit too bright. I vote also for the 5th close-up photo. I think that's definitely the best brown for the quilt, and the brown and gold are great together.

Cathy77 08-18-2014 01:50 AM

I think picture #5 is a winner (gold inner border, solid(ish) brown outer border)! I would also suggest using the gold fabric as binding (if you have enough, otherwise the similiar one with the flowers might work as well). I think the one you put on top as suggestion would be too busy, as the centre is quite busy itself, with the many, many pretty scrap fabrics you used. It'd be good to balance that out with relatively calm borders and binding, so that the focus stays on the centre.

QuiltMom2 08-18-2014 03:27 AM

Wow! I love working with scraps and your quilt is beautiful!! I vote for gold inner border, brown outside.

I like the gold narrow with the brown wide… Great job of using up those "little things in stash/es"!..

That's my vote, too! Love your quilt!

judith ann 08-18-2014 06:32 AM

I like the thin border with the flowers but would pair it with the plainer brown in picture 5. I think the shininess of the gold does not go with the fabrics in the quilt.

quilter68 08-18-2014 06:43 AM

PHOTO #2, PLEASE! Love your quilt.

tessagin 08-18-2014 06:47 AM

Ditto what she said!!!

I like #5 best, followed by #1. Beautiful quilt top!

SusanErler 08-18-2014 06:57 AM

Love the quilt -- it's beautiful! I especially like the fabric with the duck head. What a great job you did with the fussy cuts!

I was going to do one of these with a single color theme like red and white or blue and white, but yours has made me rethink that and go completely scrappy.

Love it!!!

caspharm 08-18-2014 11:12 AM

I like the first option under the finished center.

azwendyg 08-18-2014 11:24 AM

I like the 2nd option of border fabrics the best, but it really depends on what you are planning for the quilting too. The stitching can add so much to an otherwise plain border.

tammyg 08-18-2014 11:58 AM

I love your quilt.... and I pick the 4th pic....

KarenNC 08-18-2014 05:31 PM

LOVE your quilt.. :) I think I like pic #5.

Texas_Sue 08-19-2014 04:13 AM

I like the gold and brown on the next to last picture.

Good news is nothing is "wrong" - all your combos look good, but..... I am one that has to see it from a distance - prefer on a design wall. I kinda like that brick pattern - has a different look to it - again a bit of distance would tell me more. I love your rusty border with the dots - good blender for that quilt.
Good luck choosing

marciacp 08-19-2014 06:04 AM

I like 4 or 5 best. However, I have to agree with someone else that suggested a different binding than the stripe.
Somehow, that takes your eye away from the great quilt and doesn't tie it together as well. Binding should always
tie in the body of the quilt and not stand alone, like I think the stripe does. You did a great job on this quilt and it will look great when it's finished. :)

paintmejudy 08-19-2014 06:30 AM

I vote for gold inner and brown bubbles for outer. And bind with the brown so it doesn't detract from your quilt. I was taught to match the binding to the outer border -- a contrasting binding calls the eye away from the quilt.

wildyard 08-19-2014 06:36 AM

The gold and dark brown gets my vote also, wonderful scrappy quilt!!
