What level of quilting do you think this pattern is? I really like bit, but I don't want to attempt something that is beyond my ability.

I love that quilt. I may have to make it myself! I don't know if you have done any paper piecing, but if you have, you shouldn't have any trouble with this quilt. I would say it's intermediate with knowledge of paper piecing.

cbridges22 09-27-2010 06:03 AM

It depends.Have you ever paper pieced before? If not I would go to the paper piecing tutorial and try a sample block first and see how you like paper piecing. If you like it then I would try one of the simpler crosses and work your way thru.

My thoughts exactly

cherylynne 09-27-2010 06:15 AM

I really love that quilt. It isn't really easy, but if you love it you will be motivated to finish it. The colors are beautiful!! Don't get frustrated just take your time.

wolfkitty 09-27-2010 06:17 AM

Doing the points is the trickiest part. If you are a beginner, that's the one that will give you the most trouble. It's a very nice quilt. I like it.

ghostrider 09-27-2010 06:22 AM

She says right on the pattern that "beginner's with some experience in FPP should be able to accomplish these patterns without a problem."

stefanib123 09-27-2010 06:34 AM

Well now you've gave me another "someday" quilt to do! LOL! I have been looking for a "cross" pattern and this is a great one!

As for the level of expertise, I can't help you there. I think it would be "doable" for me, using paper piecing. BUT, I don't care to try anything! LOL!

MommaDorian 09-27-2010 06:43 AM

I haven't done any paper piecing yet. Guess I'd better practice first. Thanks for all your input!!

Twilliebee 09-27-2010 06:43 AM

I'm thinking that if you find you're not crazy about paper piecing some of Rhonda's cut down techniques would work for this. Good luck!

What does 'cut down' mean?

Lynnejean 09-27-2010 06:51 AM

Just dive in dear! It doesn't matter what you have done before.... you will learn along the way.You can find help here and tons of videos to help you out. If you love it just go for it!

If you never step out of your comfort zone you will never accomplish anything great! :-)

This appears to be a fairly easy pattern I'd have my second level beginners tackle. Not a fan of paper piecing, personally, but it would not *have* to be done that way.
You'll be fine, just "do it!"

Is the flower border the only part that is PP'd? I've been reading through the block directions, but I havn't seen anything about PP yet. Can you guys tell by looking at them?

Bobbin along 09-27-2010 07:29 AM

Yes, the smaller side blocks around the large cross are all PP. It IS a beautiful design--good luck!

I completely concur
Great patterns, thanks for the post.

Yep - coz those little triangles are really little.

tooMuchFabric 09-27-2010 07:50 AM

confident beginner.

quiltingaz 09-27-2010 07:58 AM

It looks to me like the crosses are paperpieced and the flowers and leaves are appliqued. I love both techniques so I would do this quilt. It is beautiful

MommaDorian 09-27-2010 07:59 AM

Could I cheat and just use a plain border around the big cross, skip the flowers?

gollytwo 09-27-2010 08:21 AM

SURE

Quiltforme 09-27-2010 11:58 AM

I would say try it. You CAN do it take the challenge then if you get stuck we are here for you. I thought the log cabin was a hard block and would not try it. See my avatar i did it and it was easy. One step at a time you can do it and I bet it would turn out beautiful!

I agree, Intermediate!

pocoellie 09-27-2010 12:58 PM

I would say that some blocks are fairly easy and others a little more difficult, but I certainly think you can do it.

Ok!! I'm going to do it!! I practiced some paper piecing today and found it something I think I could successfully do. I just need to get to the fabric store to pick out fabric. Thanks for everyones support!!

skothing 09-27-2010 01:21 PM

great news!

Qbee 09-27-2010 07:12 PM

Oh my gosh! That is just beautiful!! I did a search for quilt patterns with crosses and didn't see that...I LOVE it!

wvdek 09-27-2010 07:26 PM

If you practice making some PP pieces that are fairly easy and you make something like a runner or tabletop, and you have no problems, I say go for it. I think it is a great quilt for a confident beginner, too.

the flower border is applique. aside from that, there's a lot of paper piecing.
i would consider this intermediate, with an understanding of piecing, applique and paper piecing. if you take it one block at a time and carefully follow the instructions and be very patient you should be able to accomplish it. just go slowly . by the time you finish it, you'll have learned a lot and you'll have a beautiful quilt
to show for it. dive in.
if you have problems or questions along the way, the board is here help you out.

penski 09-27-2010 10:33 PM

it looks to intense for me good luck if you makeit show us a picture when you are done,
i dont paper piece maybe thats why

Becky Crafts 09-28-2010 01:40 AM

Jeanne, that's so true! I tried a block of Dresden Star which is quite a project. All through it I was told it was way above my expertise and you know...it came out beautiful and I told them what you just said! How can I get the expertise if I don't try!

Carol Doak's Books have the best instrucitons for PP. They are worth the investment. Once you get started you will be hooked on PP. Good Luck

Dmart 09-28-2010 06:03 AM

I say go for it !!!! You never know until you try. I say that because we all tend to talk ourselves down. confidence and GO !

oh man...now I am going to have to make that quilt, it's gorgeous! But I think it's probably intermediate. No problem!

ruthieg 09-28-2010 11:41 AM

My DD made this quilt for her friend who helped her through RCIA to join the Catholic Church. It came out beautiful.

Which of the blocks do you think is the best to start with? The easiest of all the others?

ruthieg 09-28-2010 03:44 PM

DD said the blocks need extra on the edges as tiny pieces fray out. I would start with one that has the least number of pieces.

New knee 09-28-2010 06:18 PM

The pattern looks very complicated to me. But you know your skills, so give it a try. Make a block or two before cutting all of the quilt.
