Look what I found at Harbor Freight

I want to share what I found at Harbor Freight for $2.29. They are called airbrush cleaning brushes. They are nylon and should be great for cleaning hard to reach places in my sewing machines.

Too cool! I need those!

LynnVT 08-02-2012 04:46 PM

These look great! Recently someone asked how to clean their computer keyboard - this will be great for that, too!

Candace 08-02-2012 05:27 PM

Those are awesome!

joyce888 08-02-2012 05:30 PM

Great find, thanks for the info. I'll be heading there Saturday, also want to get a magnetic dish for pins, etc.

nativetexan 08-02-2012 05:48 PM

boy, you're not kidding. why don't sewing machines come with skinny brushes like that!! but they never do. thanks.

Silver Needle 08-02-2012 05:56 PM

Great find! Getting several of those on my next shopping trip to town. We collect vintage machines and those brushes will be great for them, as well as keeping my Bernina 640 clean. Maybe even places on Millenium.

lfstamper 08-02-2012 06:03 PM

Great find! Thanks!

alfosa421 08-02-2012 06:16 PM

they look like they will do a great job getting the fuzzies out

Be glad the sewing machine places don't have something like that. Think about what they would charge for it.

sylviak 08-02-2012 09:13 PM

Those are nice! I use a child's paint brush. Let us know how well they work. Another thing I've been looking for is a screwdriver with a very short handle or handle that has a 90* angle. The screw driver that came with my machine is too tall to take out the screw in the feed dog plate. I need to look online I suppose!

mermaid 08-03-2012 03:58 AM

Harbor Freight has that little screwdriver you need--a ratchet set for about $3.99 or so...it's a thumb operated ratchet with several screw driver tips. I love mine. Learned about it here on this board.

pollyjvan9 08-03-2012 05:15 AM

I have never been to a Harbor Freight but have been given items as gift that were bought there and I have been wondering if they have the cheaper canned air and if it is safe for sewing machines. I usually buy it on sale at Hancocks but it is still expensive and I use it a LOT. I am definitely going to get a set of those skinny brushes.

sew4nin 08-03-2012 05:16 AM

Saw that yesterday and didn't know I needed it. I have to go back today to get something for my DH's bday (he was with me last night). I will pick one up for my mom, too. I always appreciate when people on the board share their tools and tips.

Neat tools! Thanks for posting.

Peckish 08-03-2012 08:31 AM

I'm super cheap. I use an old mascara brush - cleaned, of course. :)

LynnVT 08-03-2012 08:33 AM

I've heard that canned air is not good because it blows the fuzz deeper into the machine where you can't get it out. But I'm no expert on anything.

would you be able to clean out a mascara brush and use that? It would have a nice sized handle to make it easier to hold onto...

Sweet the true recycle. I don't use makeup but allot of my friends do so I bet I can get one or two

margee 08-03-2012 09:44 AM

Am I seeing a metal tip on the end of these brushes? I'd be very careful using that in any tight spaces of the machine esp. around the bobbin case. My Janome came with a good cleaning brush.

Delta 08-03-2012 09:51 AM

sweet I will be going there this weekend. thx for the tip

sandy l 08-03-2012 10:38 AM

Yes, don't use canned air to clean your machine. It just blows every thing back where you can't get it out. A while back, someone here on QB posted some pictures of the bottom inside of a machine that had been "cleaned" with canned air and it was a solid mess of gunk!

Jeanette Frantz 08-03-2012 02:00 PM

Sylviak,

you should be able to find a regular mechanic's "stubby screwdriver" at any store which handles automotive tools or others. I usually end up borrowing my son's tool if I need to get that screw out! I'm a great one for advice, I need to get one for my tool box!

Oh yea, gotta ha dat!

homecaregiver 08-04-2012 04:22 AM

I would love 2 sets of these but alas, we do not have a harbor freight near by. Oh well.

caspharm 08-04-2012 04:59 AM

That sounds great. I may have to go over there.

Grace MooreLinker 08-04-2012 06:00 AM

They have some neat useful stuff there, I wonder through the store when I go with my husband just looking for anything that I might use sewing or other wise.

lynnefaye 08-04-2012 07:08 AM

I use cleaned mascasra brushes, too. One is straight and thin and the other fuller and curved. The two I have are soft, no exposed metal on the ends. I didn't care much for the brush that came with my Janome, these work much better for me and also on my Innova longarm. I will be looking for the stubby rachet screwdriver set, sounds really useful.

dorrell ann 08-04-2012 08:31 AM

I was there 4 days ago -wish I had seen this post before then-I want that....

JustAbitCrazy 08-04-2012 10:00 AM

And I have a mascara which is getting dry and used up. Now I know not to throw away the brush when it's finished! Wish I kept the last one....

Scakes 08-04-2012 10:19 AM

I've got 1 brush very similar but had no idea where to get new ones. Thanks for sharing.

Elaine433 08-04-2012 10:33 AM

Those look great. I can think of many times this past year when I would have used them all. Thanks for the info.

Maybe I'm not thinking hard enough, but, why? What would be wrong with a metal tip?

Momo 08-04-2012 02:24 PM

No end to the uses for our trash, it all a treasure if we think about it, hmmmmmm...

I want the brushes from Harbor Freight also.

patski 08-04-2012 02:30 PM

you can also get a 12 inch long magnet to hold scissors/seam ripper etc and it can be attached to the wall! Also check out the magnetic wrist band that is used for nails, its' great for pins too!

petlover 08-04-2012 04:38 PM

Great idea and what a find. Thanks for sharing.

DH got me a set at Home Depot. The store guy couldn't believe that I work on old sewing machines - he wondered why. DH advised him not to ask me because he'd more than he ever wanted to know. Probably too true.
