I was at the local LA and a customer brought in a quilt that I havent seen the pattern for before. She said it was Square Dance and she found it in a bbok but couldnt remember the name of. Can anyone help me find the pattern, I have searched and still cant find it.
It was all 2 1/2 inch squares, lights and darks almost in a diamond patterns. |
I had a bit of a look and the images that come up for square dance look very similar to quilts made using the twister tool.
Was it like this? http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-89412-1.htm |
If you google 'square dance quilt pattern' you get several block that are completely different. May be you recognise one of them?
|
Faster yet, do a Google image search for Square Dance Quilt. You can then find the sites that have photos that match what you saw.

Bonnie, that looks like its made with 2 1/2" X 4 1/2" strips with a 2 1/2" square at one end stitched to make a triangle . sew two of these together (opposite direction) to make a square, that looks like its the only block, just twist it around.
Clear as mud?

Interesting. I found a pattern in my files called "Square Dance" and it isn't like any of these. It is created by Bits 'n Pieces and made with simple 5" squares and 4-patches. Could this be the one? PM me if you'd like more information.

That's easy peasy.
Looks like it's made up of a bunch of 9 or 16-patch blocks. As long as you have good contrast between your lights and darks, that will be a successful quilt. And portions of it can be done with strip piecing. Give me a moment...... |
It looks like Bonnie Hunter's free pattern. on Quiltville.com. I'll have a look through to see if I can find it.

Does anyone bother to actually read the thread first?
I think the quilt is made up of split 9 patches like the picture below. EQ keeps blowing up on me so I can't make the quilt. But it you put 4 of these blocks, dark sides towards the center, you can see how it would form the central motif. And flip them and you get the frame. Maybe EQ will cooperate later in the day. I'll try again then. Right now I want to throw my laptop out the window. :hunf: |
If you take a Split 9 Patch and turn it so the 4 darks come together in the center, you'll have this block but I'm still puzzling over the sashing.
Look at both of the "Joan's" examples. http://www.quilterscache.com/S/Split...ock_Page2.html |
It's not sashing, that's why you're puzzled. ;) The layout is actually a tessellation, simple in design, very complex in coloring and could be tricky in putting together correctly. I don't use EQ, so you'll have to settle for Excel for the 'map'.
The basic unit is 12 split 9-patches in a 'plus sign' layout. They stagger and nest with each other. Awesome design with great possibilities. http://i29.servimg.com/u/f29/13/49/59/13/square10.jpg |

Here's the quilt.
It's made up entirely of the split 9patch blocks I posted above, all with the same coloring (light/dark placement). For the quilt below, I "closed" the navy streaks at the top and the bottom which resulted in having to put 8 blank yellow 9patches. But that's just a personal preference. If you leave the top and bottom rows of 9 patches off, then you don't have to worry about it. You can make the 9patches any size you want, depending what size quilt you want. This quilt is 100" x 86", with 6" blocks, in a 18x14 block setting. Just flip its orientation for a queen size quilt. EQ is weird sometimes. ;-) The 2nd pic is a sample with the blocks outlined. |

I figured it out and it's even easier than I suspected. You make the split 9 patch and turn all the darks to the center then you surround that with more split 9 patches and turn those with the darks to make the "sashing". It uses very large blocks comprised of 16 split 9 patch blocks. The first 4 in the center with the darks turned to the center and the remaining 12 blocks are all arranged around the center and turned to form a ring.

I see MTS beat me to it so now you have 2 patterns of the same thing.
I love the simple ones that look so complicated once they're assembled. |
This is what I found. I am hoping that it's the same
http://www.aroundoz.com/a_craft_arch..._quilt_one.htm http://www.aroundoz.com/a_craft_arch..._quilt_two.htm There are two parts. |
I have made several of these quilts (the first one in a class) and the pattern is simple (when you have the pattern) and fun to make. As a previous poster noted the book is available on Amazon and is entitled - "Square Dance" - revised edition - by Martha Thompson.

I have a book, Quilts from the Heart, with that patten in it. It's actually the one on the front cover. Easier to make than it looks. My mother made it for a christmas quilt -very nice!
here is Amazon website: http://www.amazon.com/Quilts-Heart-P...4339746&sr=1-2 |
Interesting block.

I have a book called Square Dance by Martha Thompson (1995)
Published by That Patchwork Place, Inc. P.O. Box 118 Bothell, WA 98041-0118 This book has many variations of the patterns that many people have searched for you. I would share if you are interested. As I am sure it is out of print. |

Does this help any. This pattern is not called square dance but it does look similar |
Look up: Square Dance by Martha Thompson 1995
I found the very book I own. It ranges in price from 11.00 to 180.00 (for a used book!!!) I have a real treasure! Maybe I should sell mine, I could buy a yard or two of fabric.... Ha, Ha......... Actually, I made a quilt out of this book. It was fun, but I was dissapointed on the fabric wasted. |

Bonnie - Check out the 12in Square Dance pattern with accompanying quilt
at Quilter's Cache [http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html]. When the page comes up just go to "Alphabetized Blocks" and pick out Square Dance. All her patterns are free. She uses a plain center square but you can substitute a 4 patch or a theme print or anything else you like. -Judy |

Do you know who the pattern designers are? Was it
"Mountain Patchwork" If the Square Dance pattern you want is from Mountain Patchwork I have that pattern in my quilt shop. The pattern I have has some Embroidery on it as well if that helps to identify it. Judy C. |
