Hi Jill ~ I used this idea but did them without binding. They were so much fun to make! They don't look nearly as finished as yours but I used scrappy fabrics so it works

here is a link:

thank you so much for the idea!

All pics beautiful!! But eewww! don't like the birthing term! I've always known it as an envelope finish-gonna stick with that!

I love to use Jill's method though I sometimes sew on an angle. I think you you add a a 3/4 inch or thereabout border around it and even if you do birthing method it would look as if it were bound.

I make any 12 inch block I like. Then I add a one -two inch border all around the block. Then I add a pieced border on the outside on the sides of flying geese or something eye catching. The place mat ends up being (with 1 inch top/bottom and 1 +2 on the sides) 13 1/2 by 17, the size of most place mats.

I sometimes use the same fabric or color for the 1 inch border for all 4 to coordinate.

I don't have EQ and I gave the last set to my mom for Christmas,
so
here are the elements and you'll have to sort of use your imagination

make the colors coordinate

yes, these are flying geese. Thanks!
