My sister wants 8 place mats, scrappy style - she doesn't care the pattern, fabric, etc.
I've search the forum for different place mat ideas but was hoping you could share some pictures/thoughts/patterns that I could use. I'll probably "birth" them so I won't have to use binding. Then quilt them after birthing. Thanks so much for any ideas you have to share :) |
This is what I do for place mats, and yes, I birth them too.
I make any 12 inch block I like. Then I add a one -two inch border all around the block. Then I add a pieced border on the outside on the sides of flying geese or something eye catching. The place mat ends up being (with 1 inch top/bottom and 1 +2 on the sides) 13 1/2 by 17, the size of most place mats. I sometimes use the same fabric or color for the 1 inch border for all 4 to coordinate. |

Try the 10 Minute tablerunner pattern after you sew your scraps together, use a solid for the backing, no binding, no batting and easy to make.

For placemats, without binding, I use two pieces for the back..cut 1/2" wider than the finished mat. I sew these pieces together, leaving an opening for turning. After you sandwich your placemat, sew around all four sides. Clip corners and turn through the opening in the back. Hand sew opening closed and then you can quilt it. I like the finished look doing it this way.

I wasn't familiar with that term.[/quote] Yes .......when birthing a quilt, I leave an opening on one side and after turning it right side out through that opening, you can hand stitch it closed or machine stitch it closed, sewing 1/4" seam around the quilt. For placemats....I think it looks more finished the way I described. |
