I was reading Harriet Hargrave's new book, Quilter's Academy 2 and was so excited when she recommended a great sewing table.

She recommends a Safco Folding Computer Table SAF1935GR

This is the information on the table:

The laminate color is a light gray and the center shelf adjusts up and down six increments. The folding table measures 47-1/2"W x 29-3/4"D x 28-3/4"H. The table supports up to 100 lbs.

The cost for this table is $128 with free shipping. I ordered mine through www.buyonlinenow.com

I can't wait to get it!

Keep us posted once you get it! It looks like it is a good alternative for the expensive cabinets. It might be a good choice for me because it folds up for storage (I live in a small mobile). I'm curious of the size of the shelf. I've got a viking sapphire, longer than a standard machine.

i have the same machine, i dont think it will fit. Looks kinda short. i should measure

oneygirl 07-10-2010 04:47 PM

The drop down tray measures 20 3/4" L X 9 1/2" wide. It should be big enough for my Babylock Quest Plus or my Bernina as an alternate sewing table.

I wish my machine was here to measure. Just dropped my baby off today for a tune up.

oneygirl 07-10-2010 04:58 PM

Hopefully I should have it by the middle of the week. I am actually replacing an old desk that I have in my sewing room for my laptop and printer. This way I can work on two different projects at once!

virtualbernie 07-10-2010 05:55 PM

Thanks! I ordered one and used coupon code JULY550 and got $5 off!

oneygirl 07-10-2010 06:04 PM

Oh cool! I didn't know about the coupon code and paid full price!

I use a regular plastic folding table, But like the cut out for a keyboard

BellaBoo 07-10-2010 10:34 PM

What a great table! did you know WalMart has this table for $109? It's out of stock right now online but I've seen them at Sam's Club and in some bigger Walmarts.

oneygirl 07-11-2010 12:29 AM

No I didn't know that.

eparys 07-11-2010 02:51 AM

That table is great - Thanks for the link!

We have both a Wally world and Sams and I have never seen it in either (I bought regular folding tables at Sams for my sewing room). I will look more carefully next time just in case.

Please let us know what you think when you get them.

katsewnsew 07-11-2010 03:14 AM

You think the keyboard area will be able to hold the weight of a sewing machine? I guess if Harriet Hargrave recommends it, it must work!!!

Kaye-Kaye 07-11-2010 03:18 AM

Do any of you that use a folding table, have trouble with it bouncing when you are sewing? When we have a bunch of us together to sew we use folding table and they bounce like crazy when you are sewing fast. Makes me motion sick.
On these computer tables do you think the shelf is strong enough for a sewing machine?

katier825 07-11-2010 04:08 AM

I would think that if you get it and are unsure if the shelf can support the weight of the machine, you could probably add some extra brackets underneath to help support it. Mine is a viking sapphire and it's very heavy.

oneygirl 07-11-2010 05:05 AM

It is supposed to support up to 100 pounds!

katsewnsew 07-11-2010 05:50 AM

This would be a great table for free motion quilting! The ad says that it will hold "100 lbs. evenly distributed". So the drop down area might not hold much weight. I, too, have a Sapphire 850 and the machine is quite heavy. Is there anyone out there that has this table? Leah Day has one on her site for $124.00 and free shipping but it is not as big as this one. I guess you could add some brackets to hold a heavy machine. But I would be concerned that it wouldn't hold for long.

oneygirl 07-11-2010 06:51 AM

I own a Babylock Quest Plus that is a heavy machine. When the table comes in this week I will put the machine on it and take a picture. A sewing machine doesn't even come close weighing 100 pounds. I can't imagine Harriet Hargrave recommending this table if it couldn't support a sewing machine!

katsewnsew 07-11-2010 10:49 AM

That will be great, oneygirl! That table would be perfect for fmq. Nice size and it looks pretty sturdy, too.
And like we said, if Harriet Hargrave recommends it, it must work okay! Anxious to hear from you when the table comes in! kat

littlehud 07-11-2010 12:09 PM

I can't wait til you get it. Post a pic of yours and let us know what you think of it.

SittingPretty 07-11-2010 01:03 PM

I have a BabyLock Decorator's Choice which is heavy enough, but I'm SURE it doesn't weigh 100 lbs. lol. Still, how would you make it a nice flat surface for sewing, you know, fill in the "holes" around the machine? I have an extension table that I slide up against the machine bed, but there doesn't look like enough room to use it on that table.

oneygirl 07-11-2010 01:46 PM

The insert moves up and down, so you would make the bed of your machine flush with the side of the table. I will take a picture when I receive it so you can see!

sewcrazygirl 07-11-2010 01:49 PM

can wait to see pics :)

oneygirl 07-12-2010 06:19 PM

I checked the tracking from buyonline and my table will be here tomorrow! I hope that the work day goes quickly tomorrow!

oneygirl 07-12-2010 06:28 PM

It should be pretty sturdy. I will let you know when I receive it.

wvdek 07-12-2010 07:51 PM

That looks really neat. Make sure you let us know what you think about it.

oneygirl 07-13-2010 04:18 PM

Well my table arrived today and it is very sturdy. It is a laminated gray color and there is an adjustable shelf in the middle of the table. I have my laptop sitting on the adjustable shelf now and will test my sewing machines as far as weight and size this weekend. I will post pictures Saturday since that is my day off from work.
This table is all one piece with sturdy metal legs. It doesn't jiggle at all. I am looking forward to moving my Babylock Quest Plus onto this table and placing my new Bernina in my regular sewing table.

katsewnsew 07-14-2010 03:07 AM

Goody! Goody! Really anxious to hear how the machines do on it. I know the legs look really sturdy and I am really hoping it all works out so I can hit the "Add to Cart' button and get me one, too!!! Good Luck! Don't forget the pix! k

oneygirl 07-14-2010 02:57 PM

I think the shelf is sturdy enough to hold a machine. It measures 20" L X 9" Deep. The brackets that hold the shelf are very strong and probably stainless tubing. I will take pictures of 3 different machines on the table Saturday and you can judge whether it is a good fit for your machine!

oneygirl 07-16-2010 02:59 PM

Great News! I will post pictures tomorrow! This table is sturdy enough for a Babylock Quest Plus (as big as a Viking Sapphire) or a Bernina, or a Babylock! What a great value also!

Here are the pictures of the Safco Sewing Table. One picture is taken with my Bernina on it and the other with My Babylock Quest Plus on it. The Quest is a very heavy machine and was very stable on the shelf insert in the table. This is a great table and a very good buy!!

Hey, that looks really good! Now all I gotta do is wait till DH has his second cup of coffee, then he mellows out! I will mention buying this table in passing. I have already gone over my quilting budget for August and we are still in July! Wish me luck!

pojo 07-18-2010 04:14 AM

I have never seen this table in our Walmart's or Sam's either.

but I like this table very much.

katier825 07-18-2010 04:18 AM

That table looks like it should work well with your machines. I like that it can be folded up. That's a big consideration for me since I don't have a real sewing room. It's good that the corners are rounded, not squared. It makes a big difference when working on a quilt.

oneygirl 07-18-2010 04:24 AM

I am so happy with my purchase! I will be using the table for my Bernina, as I needed asecond table in my sewing room but did not want to spend $500 like I did with my first one. This table does not rock at all, and I can easily move it to another room by just folding it up. The shelf also adjusts up and down and the brackets are all metal.

wichypoo 07-18-2010 04:36 AM

I just found this table on Overstock.com for $95.99 with their regular $2.95 postage looks the deal for me.
Thanks for letting us know about this great table.
:-D

oneygirl 07-18-2010 04:49 AM

That is a good price. How much is the shipping?

katsewnsew 07-18-2010 05:00 AM

ebay has it for $109.00 free shipping -

softpatches 07-18-2010 10:19 AM

THX MUCH for sharing this and the pics---I too did not want to spend another 600 or $700 dollars and I needed another table behind my sewing cabinet which holds my Janome 6600--I am going to use this one for extra space when I quilt and I will use it for my extra machine---
