I have read somewhere that you can use two top threads and one bobbin thread and if you quilt from the back the stitching will look like hand quilting. Do any of you quilters have any info on the technique? Thank you.

I have two on top and one on the bottom, doesn`t look like hand quilting to me. I use it to hem kids quilts that I know will be washed a lot, because it holds the hem real good. I never sewed on the bottom to see how it looks , but in the hem it looks like an X.

in the manuel for my machine it says to loosen the top tension a bit and use an invisiblr thread in the bobbin for a hand quilted look, i've never tried it
|
Isnt there a machine that is supposed to have a stitch that looks like a handquilted stitch? I think its pretty spendy.. can remember the name.
|
I remember reading on the Janome forum (in the Yahoo group) that there was a way of setting the stitch to look like hand stitching. I haven't belonged to that group for a long, long time but perhaps someone on here does and could get it out.

I have a stitch on my machine that alows this. Insvisible thread in bobbin and whatever you like on top. The stitch looks like hand quilting 'cause one stitch is regular thread and the stitch next to it is the invisible thread. Cool!
I have an old Bernina, Quilters edition. peace |
My friend just got a new Bernina and it has a hand quilt option to select.

Yes the Sashiko does hand stitch...If you search Sashiko on this sight...many discussions on how to get this look with your machine...using invisable thread on top, double stitch on your machine, reg stitch in bobbin...do your longest stitch length and high tension...What it does is pull your reg thread to the top everyother stitch to make it look like hand running stitch

Even if your machine doesn't have a built in stitch for this, I think you can play around with different stitches and you can replicate this look. SOMEWHERE in my sewing room I have notes on this and what stitch(es) you can use to do this. You would use invisible thread in the top and colored thread in bottom (whatever color you want to show). It has been a long time since I did this so can't remember but it was really cool. If I find it I will add it to this topic.
|
all it takes is money, ladies and you can have a machibe that serves you tea at two precisely. LOL
|
I have heard if you use monofilament thread in top and whatever color you want in the bobbin and adjust your tension so that the bobbin thread shows it looks like handstitching. Never tried it though

The Janome Memory Craft 11000 SE has built in hand-look stitches, including a hand quilting stitch. I will try to post the link to the Janome web site that shows a picture of these stitches: http://content.janome.com/documents/...ures/MC11K.pdf

I looked at one of those Babylock Sashiko machines - it does an incredible stitch - but the price sent me into cardiac arrest - it was $1900.00 - it only does the one stitch but you can lengthen the stitch and change how many stitches per inch. Its very cool but very pricey.

Thank you all for the great info but this machine is much more than my wallet can stand but it is a wonderful machine.

I too am wondering how the test came out.

Do a search on the board for mock sashiko. Several people have posted pictures of some of the results. It can look pretty good. My picture is not very good, but in person, it looks a bit hand stitched.
|
Nancy's Notions has a video on you tube demoing the baby lock Sashiko machine. It only does top stitching!
|
I'll be watching......

Babylock sashiko...I have one and really like it.

My Janome 10000(1) will make a stitch that looks like hand quilting on top and machine stitching on the back with the proper settings. Have used it, but not a lot.

This is from the Janome board
Here's what to do: Increase the upper tension and use monofilament (invisible) thread on top. Fill the bobbin with thread the colour your want to show on the top. for instance, if you want your stitches to appear green, use green in the bobbin. Select Mode 2, Stitch 21, 22, 23 or 24. I found 22 works best. How It Works: The bottom thread is drawn up to the top by the increased upper tension and the monofilament thread doesn't show, thereby making the stitch look hand quilted. If you have trouble with the monofilament thread feeding, put the spool in a jar at the back of your machine and skip the antenna and thread it from the metal loop on top of the machine. This is a very slow process but if you have the time, it really looks pretty good. |
I use a clear thread on top, a color bobbin. Tighten my tension as high as I can, an use the reinforcement stitch. That is the stitch that goes 2 up and one back

Which CL did you see it on?

The new JUanome Horizon12000 has a stitch like that. Haven't tried it yet.
|
Sandpat did a really good test of this technique, pics included.

And to think I was upset when they thought my hand stitching was machine stitched!!
|
Hears a good one for you guys I have an Aunt that did nothing but hand quilting never sewn on machine and guess what her hand quilting looked like machine quilting she had mastered it so well Her quilts were so beautiful
|
Janome has a built-in stitch called the sculpture stitch which you can use monofilament in the bobbin and the color of your choice on top and it looks a great deal like hand quilting.
|
I have an inexpensive Brother EX-660 that has a hand quilting stitch. I haven't tried it yet.
