I have the basic serpentine stitch on my Janome 6500 and it reverts to a 2.2 stitch length. That is much too tight to do stitch over the ditch. It is also a bloody nightmare if you have to remove some of the stitching!

Viking and Pfaff machines have an adjustable serpentine stitch. I have the Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.2, has the 10" throat, built in walking foot(IDT). This is the machine I use for quilting and piecing.

OK Gale help a fellow 6600 out with the serpentine stitch, it is too narrow and small, I followed advise on the yahoo site but not much better than the original serp stitch. Thank you for any help.

The way I did it was using the instructions on the yahoo site. It turned out way different than the original stitch (I can do a comparison tomorrow).

I googled it to see which stitch you meant, i never thought of using this stitch for binding before. I am definitely going to try it out. Don't you just love when someone's question opens your eyes to all kinds of new possibilities

Here is the comparison. The one on the right is the built in serpentine on the 6600 with a stitch width of 7. Default is 5 I think, and the length can't be made any bigger. The one on the left is the programmed serpentine using mode 2, stitch 14, with stitch width and length adjustments.

Basically you are programming multiple stitches with every stitch being the same stitch number, but with a different stitch width. Stitch lengths stay the same.

I use this stitch all the time on Bernina ..........I just love it for quilting . Cathy
