Cathy. I love your wreath quilt!! Now did you buy the pattern or did you do it on your own? How did you know where to put the white pieces so that they came out right in the middle? I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to make the template. Thanks for any help you can give me. Joyce

Kim, that's really nice. I love the colors.

I had hoped to post a shot of my finished wreath ... got the borders on, and quilted the pinwheels and the white background. Had decided on my design for FMQ on the border, went to start working, and my sewing machine died on me. It's now at the dealer ... might be 2 weeks! How can I survive??!!! Tomorrow, I will get out my old machine and see what I can do with it ....

watterstide 12-09-2010 09:23 AM

OH NO! 2 weeks?! how awful! what happened to it..?
i decided to FMQ my wreath..i was going to SITD, but changed my mind, for the 10th time!
i hope you can your machine back way sooner than than claim!

cat-on-a-mac 12-09-2010 09:29 AM

I guess the computer decided I'd been using it too much! It's a Janome Horizon that I got this past summer -- my big splurge for the year ... or decade!. The screen goes to "E4" shortly after powering on. Dealer says he has to replace a board. I've seen some other posts regarding similar failures. I don't think it overheated, although I had been doing some heavy monogramming right before it died.

On my wreath, I quilted about 1/4 inside the edges of each of the wheels. Then I did a close stipple with swirls in the white background.

watterstide 12-09-2010 09:59 AM

replace the board? holy samolies..
tell them you want a new machine from a different batch..!
poor baby..

So, I got my old machine out and finished this up. Here are some pictures. I put a snowflake pattern in each corner, but they don't really show up very well, except on the back!

Cathy, I really like this the way you did this. I think I will try this
sometime. I hope that is ok with you.

SaraSewing 12-13-2010 01:39 PM

I don't know how I missed this a few months ago, but I'm lovin' it now. Great examples. Thanx.

Me too. These are wonderful! Can you put 8 charms by 8 charms to make a larger quilt? Is it necessary to make a square befor cutting?

watterstide 01-16-2011 05:09 PM

yes you can! i believe the ruler would have to be about 7" or 7.5..

Ooops, should have said, 8- 5" charms by 8- 5" charms. Sorry. I am guessing the finished table topper you made is about 21"? Just trying to think of something maybe crib sized.

what was the size of the fabric square for the 6-1/2 template for the twister? Thanks,

happymrs 01-21-2011 06:11 PM

I believe you need to cut 8in blocks for that size...

watterstide 01-21-2011 06:12 PM

the fabric needs to be 1.5 inches larger thn the template.

down1 01-21-2011 08:23 PM

Thanks so much - I was hoping that it would be 8, Janet

watterstide 01-22-2011 03:32 AM

So for a 10 in. square the template or ruler would be 8.5?

watterstide 01-22-2011 04:23 AM

yes.

any ruler will work

needles3thread 02-23-2011 06:37 PM

Exceptional.

Tonisews 03-03-2011 07:26 AM

Just beautiful...I can't wait to begin ! I own a little square ruler I hope it is this size... will check ...about to run downstairs. . .

Connie in CO 03-03-2011 07:50 AM

I wonder why the marks, the 1 inch and the others are 3/4 inch?

They should all be the same distance from the corner. ie: 3/4 inch is the right measurement.

Tonisews 03-03-2011 09:22 AM

When the lines are set up on the seams of the squares the sections of each of 4 squares are cut on a precise angle...then when rejoined in a layout to form pinwheels the entire piecing is all pinwheels all in the same 4 parts of a like square. . . amazing to see happen...and beautifu l to see finished.. . .yet not a tideous process to have so many odd shapes joined and Joyfully so quickly as well...a one day project for sure you'll be so excited to show to others or gift. . .as a table topper or wall hanging if artfully chosen colors of fabric... Some (usually solids),just stand out among the others so neatly... Look at someof the links. For Twister Tool or pinwheels tool . . .

carolaug 03-21-2011 02:09 AM

What a Smart Idea!!! I like how you used the clear tape then marked the ruler

Tonisews 03-21-2011 05:11 AM

Looks great...I've since seen that the measurements are 3/4 " off each corner . . . regarless of the size...But I like your shapes, I think that is the tip--- we can vary that and experiment, for many unique shapes. . . I sure have enough fabric. . . (all we need is 4 colored blocks sewn 2 x 2 then bordered to get our sample of the finished shapes !
A shop called www.PrimativeGatherings.com 'has permission' to make and sell a template to make miniatures ! They specialize in all that is done in Wools,' hand dyed' there, best seen. and all else that's quality. . .perfect place to look at things and shop for 'country theme' sewing, hooking, quilting gals. and yes, like me, it's in Wsiconsin. . . the origin of the Twister Tool is far North in Wisconsin, too . . . I'll only make, for personal use, sizes she doesn't sell. . . they are not a big wealthy business . . . When they are at shows they sell their tool for $5 . . .only 2 products in the whole booth ! sizes for 5" Charms & 10" Layer Cakes.

carolaug 03-21-2011 04:38 PM

do you mean this shop?? http://www.primitivegatherings.us/sh...productId=7244 - I saw the tool for 18.00 but not 5.00. I am thinking I like the idea of drawing the line on a regular ruler. But $18.00 is not that bad.

Tonisews 03-22-2011 05:02 AM

At this site - they remnamed the tiny one...I can't find it on-line... but, I might see it at a quilt show I'm going to in Oshkosh on Friday... I'll check their size...I expect it is 1" or less. . . makes pinwheels to make a 10" square mini quilt...go to the site I sent to yu it is shown there. clever arrangements. . .

thanks for the info! the itty bitty pinwheel is soo cute!

happymrs 03-22-2011 06:03 AM

I made my own tool & did mine. I did a wreath in xmas fabrics & added another round to the wreath. Then, with the little squares I ended up with, I did a mini wreath the same way. Love how they both turned out, need to take pics & post them soon. You really don't need the tool, make your own & save your money for fabric. These are so fun to play with!

I found a charm pack at Walmart to test this out. I used 25 charms (5 per row) and added a 3" border.
I put clear tape on my ruler and traced the lines from the instruction sheet.

This is the first time I've posted with multiple pics.....I'm hoping everything shows up ok

Thanks for the pic on how to make a template, I picked one up today at Joanns with my 40% coupon and am now ready to at least make a wreath or runner !!!

bebe 05-18-2011 02:31 PM

I have the twister in small an large and love it
but if you can come up with an idea how to use your ruler go for it because it is pricey

In a post a long while back, I linked to a tutorial on Kim's web site. I guess since then, she renamed the page, so here is the current link:
