MonnaL 10-09-2011 05:26 AM

I clicked on a post this morning, and McAfee sent up an alarm that one of the ads at the top of the page was blocked for malicious content. I got out of that post really fast, and then went back later and got no alarm (different ad).

anyone else have this happen?

sahm4605 10-09-2011 05:30 AM

That's weird. Never had that happen to me. Abreast that I know of.

MonnaL 10-09-2011 05:31 AM

I tried to hover over the URL of the ad to see where it was going, but just got a bunch of gobbly-gook.

QUILTNMO 10-09-2011 05:37 AM

never had that happen

QuiltnNan 10-09-2011 05:41 AM

nope, have never seen that on the QB

patricej 10-09-2011 05:43 AM

if you can, take a screen shot if you encounter this event again.

attach the screen shot to an email report to [email protected]

the board itself is not infected by any viruses, adware, or malware. the techs will want to know right away if any of the target sites in the rotating ads are suspect.

QKO 10-09-2011 05:43 AM

The ads all come from google ads, and the urls always look like gobbledygook. One would think that google ads are vetted, so it could be that McAfee is throwing up a false positive.

I wouldn't click on it though... :)

barny 10-09-2011 05:46 AM

I got on my computer a day or so ago and got on a post that was pretty rank. I've looked for it , but it is gone. I would have reported it to theboard if I could have found it again. but....

nance-ell 10-09-2011 05:59 AM

That happens to me often these days. Not sure exactly what's going on. <sigh>

Granna of 5 10-09-2011 06:19 AM

Never happened to me.

wvhill22 10-09-2011 06:38 AM

I never click on the ads.

MonnaL 10-09-2011 08:41 AM

I will do that, Patrice. Don't know why I didn't think of it at the time. I was just in a hurry to get outta there. LOL

I didn't click on the ad - just hovered over it trying to see where it was coming from.

Jazzz 10-09-2011 10:25 AM

I wonder if that's why my computer kicks me out of this site every so often?

JulieR 10-09-2011 10:37 AM

If your virus protection has already blocked the ad there's no need to run away.

Right-click on the ad and select copy link location (or copy link), then paste it into Notepad or Word or something. I like notepad because it doesn't show it as a clickable link, just as text.

One you paste the URL, look toward the end. (In Notepad turn on WordWrap to make it easier on yourself). The URL for the target site is listed.

For instance, I have a PRWeb / Vocus ad on this post right now. I right-clicked on it and copied the link to Notepad:

http://ad.doubleclick. net/click%3Bh%3Dv8/3b9b/2/0/%2a/y%3B236080528%3B0-0%3B0%3B59384825%3B3454-728/90%3B40601522/40619309/1%3B%3B%7Esscs%3D%3fhttp://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/a...344&adurl=http://service.prweb.com/go/psg_dcobrand_ba/%3Futm_source%3Dgoogle%26utm_medium%3Dcpc%26utm_ca mpaign%3Dpsg_dcobrand_ba&nm=3

Near the bottom you can see http://service.prweb.com is the target site (everything after that just tells that site where you came from).

Probably clear as mud but I thought I'd share, in case it helps the next time. :)

the casual quilter 10-09-2011 11:13 AM

This is not exactly what happened to you, but every once in a while the message board causes my browser to shut down when I click on a link. The messae I get is something like: "this website is causing the browser to close". I'm not smart enough to know exactly where the problem is.

MonnaL 10-09-2011 11:36 AM

Okay...came back here and now one is blocked at the bottom. It's from the same source. I have done a screen shot of it, along with the source code and am mailing it to the address that Patrice suggested earlier.

dar627742 10-09-2011 11:37 AM

MonnaL 10-09-2011 11:38 AM

Too funny! This post went to the second page, and now there is one blocked on the top, and on the bottom. Same place - "http://bidder. mathtag.com/notify"

don't try to go there. LOL

gale 10-09-2011 11:47 AM

I use adblock with firefox so I don't see ads. However, I had to use another browser recently (I can't even remember why) and got a warning.

oh munner 10-09-2011 12:16 PM

I've had something happen a few times lately that has never happened before. I'll click on to a post and hear a voice say "congratulations, you've just won"....... or "you're a winner".... anybody else experience this?

JulieR 10-09-2011 12:35 PM

That happens on any site that allows ads with audio content. It isn't any different from seeing an ad; you're just hearing it, too.

gale 10-09-2011 01:08 PM

I hate audio ads and flashing/scrolling ads, as well as the popup ads. If I didn't have adblock I wouldn't go to sites that have those. I hate them that much.

ChaiQuilter 10-09-2011 07:32 PM

I never click on any of the links in the ads or the posts. I'm afraid of viruses.

gale 10-09-2011 08:38 PM

I don't think these need to be clicked in order to cause the warnings. Just having them on the page is enough. I never click ads, ever. I have clicked links in posts but only after I make sure it's a site I know about.

sandyms 10-10-2011 04:26 AM

I have the same problem as Casual Quilter. And, those pop-ups for YP.com and Congratulations! You're a winner! come up to even tho my computer is set up to not allow pop-ups. :(

Scissor Queen 10-10-2011 04:35 AM

I click on the ads if they're something I might be interested in. Advertisers aren't interested in giving you a virus, they want to sell you their products. They'd be stupid to have a virus on their sites.

supergma 10-10-2011 04:37 AM

I have had this happen twice. Both times it was when I clicked on a link. A few times when I click on a link, my computer freezes and I have to re-boot. I really have to want to see something to click on a link these days.

Highmtn 10-10-2011 05:02 AM

One of the HOTTEST virus' I ever got on my computer (the "shredder" virus) I picked up when I was looking at archived files on an older quilting thread a few years ago. It was just a link I found online one night and kept following it due to some great photos etc ...when ## POW ## my computer blinked...and off it went doing all sorts of evil things. In about 3 min it was TOAST...

When I took it in to have files recovered I asked the service guys WHY someone would hack and fry people looking at OLD QUILT LINKS? He told me that it had little to do with WHERE I was at the moment I got nuked. NO ONE ever intentionally has virus' lurking around their website. There are thousands of hacker triggers (for lack of a better term) floating around the internet that are set up to set off a virus attack on your computer. So.. something on that website tripped your antivirus program into warning you. Could be as simple as a cookie trying to attach it's self to your system (depends on how high you have your security settings).

I was SUCH A DUMMY I watched the whole thing unfold on my computer screen (complete with cockroaches marching on my screen and gawd awful head banger music playing). The service guy told me had I hit the power switch and turned OFF my system right away it would have interrupted the download. By watching what was happening I allowed the WHOOLEEEEE ENCHILADA to upload to my system and fry me.

Lesson learned. My antivirus program occasionally tosses up the red "bells and whistles" warnings you described and I just quickly *click out* of that screen. Now, on the rare occasion my computer is tossing up things that I don't LIKE seeing...and starts freezing up (ignoring my request to leave the site) I just turn it off from the power strip. I had my husband move my surge protector UP to the desk top so it's EASY to reach in case of an emergency.

bonnyh 10-10-2011 05:05 AM

Yep - when I am interested in an ad, I now write down the web address and google it. Google tells me if it's okay to go there. Last virus cost me $200, so it's worth the effort to let Google boss me around.

grumpy90650 10-10-2011 06:14 AM

i have never had a problem on the board...hope you can fix the problem!!

LindaMRB 10-10-2011 06:20 AM

I have not had that problem but I will tell you that we got rid of McAfee and have WebRoot.
Life is better since we made the switch...

Same goes for Norton-get rid of it! I hate that crapware they put on new computers.

lillybeck 10-10-2011 09:23 AM

Yes, that happens when the virus system you have on your system feels there is something not right. Rather than chance something wrong I would just delete them unless it is a site you know very well.

adrianlee 10-10-2011 10:50 AM

I have with couple sites, thanks to the protector we have on our computer which is McAfee. When our subscription ran out we're with Norton still.

Doreen 10-10-2011 10:59 AM

Thanks for the heads up. I don't click on anything I don't recognize.

QuilterToo 10-10-2011 11:25 AM

Yes. Ive had it happen by another ant-spywear and it flags that it has blocked it for possible "malicious content".

Marysewfun 10-10-2011 01:02 PM

I just got the notice, too, from McAfee across the top.

Marysewfun

sylviasmom 10-10-2011 01:12 PM

I get these message after I do my yearly renewal of Norton and McAfee.

mimee4 10-10-2011 02:06 PM

Yes, I just got it for a game that was shown at the top of the board.

phylby 10-10-2011 03:51 PM

This has happened to me a couple times. But after a while it goes away.
