I made my daughter 4 quilts for her newborn baby. Her favorite is the one I used a panel. The other 3 were pieced. go figure. So don't be discouraged by using a panel they are cherished too.

I'm sure if her husband is deployed it could affect her attitude in general. What was your response to her question, and how did she take that. Did she show any understanding after you explained?

UGH!! Why on earth would anyone say things like that?? Hmmm maybe there was no "filter" engaged when the mouth flew open? Hopefully it wasn't meant to hurt. As many here have said, that little one won't care one bit that that quilt wasn't made of hundreds of tiny pieces, he will just know that picture is his friend 'Mater and it will make him smile. Bet it winds up being one of those that gets drug around for years. I wonder if Mom wants a quilt herself? Maybe her comments we're an awkward way to request one. ;-)

I think I would ask her what is a "Real Quilt"? Your grandson will love it. Some people just don't think before they speak. I see nothing wrong with using a panel.

I love panels, I guess because I like a lot of wildlife and scenic themes. I do not think panels are crappy. They can require a good deal of detailed work. I have done several window pane oriental panels and they do require patience and precision. I am sorry she feels that way, but would not worry about it . I am sure your grandson will love it.

Your DGS will love the quilt. Kids really like the panel quilts. Sorry your daughter hurt your feelings. She just misplaced her manners that day.

She probably didn't mean anything by it; she may just not know any better. A lot of non-quilters think a quilt needs to be pieced in order to be a quilt. I have a good friend who thanked me for making her daughter a "real quilt" because she had received so many pannel quilts that had just been birthed, with no piecing. She didn't dislike them, but to her, she didn't know what to call them, since it needs to be pieced to be a quilt. I would rather assume that it was nothing but an unintended blunder due to ignorance of our craft than rude or mean-spirited.
