I ordered 10 different fabric cuts of Benartex's Mayfair line from fabric.com. When it arrived, I checked to see that all the cuts were there, then threw them into the washing machine.

As I started cutting the pieces for the quilt, I found they had shorted me 1 yard on one fabric  I NEVER thought to measure the fabric when I got it. Do you?

Now fabric.com is out of the one I need  They did, however, refund the total for that cut - so I got one yard free, but now have to go searching for another yard.

Lesson learned.

HeatherQuilts 08-04-2010 07:18 AM

Oh no! I'm so sorry that happened to you! I haven't ordered online yet, but now I know to check carefully when I get it!
I do watch when I have fabric being cut at Jo-Ann's or my LQS though.

dkabasketlady 08-04-2010 07:19 AM

I ALWAYS check to see if I get the correct amount I ordered after an experience similar to yours! I guess we have to learn the hard way!! At least I was lucky enough to get the missing yardage. I hope you can find yours also. Maybe we can find it for you if you give us the name.

bearisgray 08-04-2010 07:31 AM

I ALWAYS remeasure.

BRenea 08-04-2010 07:35 AM

I ALWAYS check my fabric orders when I get them, and I keep an eye out when I get fabric cut in a store. It doesn't hurt to make sure you are getting what you paid for!

The Quilt Gypsy 08-04-2010 07:46 AM

I received 11 cuts of fabric from fabric.com yesterday. They sent the wrong fabric on one cut. I called them and they said keep the fabric and they will send me the correct fabric. I thought that was very fair. I'm so sorry that they don't have your fabric. And thanks for the heads up...I will measure from now on!

DebraK 08-04-2010 07:51 AM

I wasn't happy with my last (only) order from Fabric.com. I ordered a green floral and they sent me a flat solid yellow. The tag on the fabric even said large green floral. Don't you think that would have been the first clue that they had the wrong fabric?

quiltbugs 08-04-2010 07:51 AM

I always measure mine...One very popular retailer just shorted me last week. They mailed me 45" wide when I had ordered and paid for 108" wide marbled fabric. (Really, I didn't have to "measure" that one...it was obvious.) I made 3 calls to them over 5 days and kept getting the excuse that the man I had to talk to was "out of town", or at lunch. Finally got to talk to that man yesterday, and I hope they make good on their promise to fix the error, because I am really waiting for this fabric.

On the other hand, I have ordered from Joanns a couple of times over the summer, and both times they have ended up sending me at least 8 - 10 inches more than I ordered on a couple of pieces of yardage. I guess they just got tired of measuring and cut it where they felt like it. :O)

I got my order yesterday too. I also had one cut of fabric that was wrong. I guess I should call them. I did not measure, maybe I should do that too. I did refold everything and it looked right as far as eyeballing it.
Overall I was happy, I got 20 yards of fabric for $56 came to about $2.80 a yard including tax.

I just got an order from them today, and for the first time ever in using fabric.com for close to 10 years, they sent me one wrong fabric. I ordered dish towel fabric and got the right length in a quilting fabric that is no where near dish towel fabric. I figure it is vacation time and their help is somewhat lacking. I am not going to return it, though. If they are short on a piece they usually e-mail me asking if they should send what they have. I have never had a problem before. They claim to have a 37" yard; have measured some but not all.

ckcowl 08-04-2010 09:56 AM

i have been ordering from fabric.com for over 10 years now; over that 10+ years there have been 3 times when there has been a problem and they were very good and fast about fixing it (once had to recut and send fabric, once i got a totally different fabric than i had ordered, they let me keep it and sent me what i was supposed to get; and once they had to give me a refund.) all three times they were very good about fixing it and i don't think 3 times in over 10 years is too bad of a track record. I have learned over the years to always check my order when it arrives regardless of where it comes from. i've been shorted much more often from a local shop than ever from on line.

Kas 08-04-2010 09:58 AM

Dang. I always seem to find out I didn't get charged for something! It usually happens at a lqs. So I have to make another trip (if I want my punchcard punched) to the store. I can't not pay for it. Even if they don't know, I do.

Annaquilts 08-04-2010 10:04 AM

I kind of eye ball but I have had more issues with poorly cut FQ or 1 yard cuts that were not 1 yard. Also one time they send me two cuts instead of one continuous. I did send that back. I do try and look when they are cutting in the store. I think you are right. Better double check when your order come sin and contact them right aways when there is an issue.

sharon b 08-04-2010 10:40 AM

 Nope have never measured  Bit at the moment not buying fabric but will keep this in the back of my mind for the future

I had to laugh at your comment "it is vacation time" ...I work in a hospital pharmacy. No matter how many are off on vacation, I STILL have to mix IV's correctly, and dispense the correct medications. NO EXCUSES! At times I feel like when I get poor customer service to say to them: "If I did my job like you are doing yours, people could DIE. I have to be accurate, why don't you??"

Sadly, you're right. I used to work for a dentist as his assistant, but in the summer sometimes I had to work as the office manager too, and I know I didn't do things quite as good as her, since I didn't do it every day. I only meant that someone was put where he or she didn't want to be or maybe wasn't qualified enough to do, and just didn't take the care he or she should have.

bjnicholson 08-04-2010 05:56 PM

I had a similar case, only it was with colors. I ordered fabric from eQuilter that was pictured and described as buttercream. What I received was more antique gold and pretty ugly. I also ordered a Moda sage which was really more of a ucky olive drab. Live and learn I guess.

RedGarnet222 08-04-2010 06:01 PM

Yes I too learned the hard way to measure my fabric when I get it. I am sorry that you are short. What is the fabric? Maybe we can help you out.
Carol here is the coupon site I know of.

littlehud 08-04-2010 06:11 PM

Wow, I never measure mine after getting it. I need to start doing this.

Jingle 08-04-2010 06:21 PM

I never mine either, I just assume everyone is honest like me. I quess I btter start checking, I heard one retailer will cheat on the yardage, so I do watch when I have fabric cut there and 3 different people have been accurate.

weezie 08-04-2010 07:46 PM

I always measure on-line fabric orders on the day they arrive here. If I'm paying attention when I buy fabric at a store while it is measured & cut, I usually don't re-measure any of that, but I really should get into the habit of checking it over when I get it home; occasionally I've picked some flawed fabric out of my stash ... way too late to do anything about it.

Gal 08-04-2010 11:36 PM

I hate to admit to being one of those 'cranky old ladies' but yes I watch them cut and I also do my sums first with regard the total price and I measure again when I get home. Two reasons, it pays to be on the ball as mistakes can happen, even little things like a missed flaw in the print etc, I live a long way out in the country if I was to return anything or get new fabric. Also I have worked in fabric retail all my working life and know the ropes, old habits die hard and all that!!!!!

fancifrock 08-05-2010 05:13 AM

This really sounds like a wonderful fabric co to deal with. ALWAYS measure even if you get material from a local store. You try to watch what the salesperson is doing but often get caught in conversation. Just check

Tinabodina 08-05-2010 05:20 AM

When I ordered from JoAnn's on line, 2 yards, it came in the mail and even before I opened the envelope I knew something was wrong. Sure enough, I only got 1 yard. I called them and they sent me 2 yards and told me to keep the 1 yard. At least they were willing to help.

CarrieAnne 08-05-2010 05:25 AM

Whoa, I never measured either...never thought too!!!! Thanks for the tip!

ckcowl 08-05-2010 05:52 AM

I don't know about other sites and coupons but if you register with fabric.com to receive the newsletter they frequently have special coupons to use, they also send you special ones every once in awhile...for shopping frequently, for not shopping in awhile, for today stephen had a moment and decided to send one out...at least once a month they offer some new coupon...they also offer free shipping after $35 ... i can always find enough to take advantage of that, and that can mean at least a free yard or two of fabric :)

cbridges22 08-05-2010 06:50 AM

Where did you get the pattern for your avatar? It is beautiful.

Evie 08-05-2010 04:30 PM

My first order at fabrics.com also was wrong. I ordered their special priced 6-yard packaging of black and snow Kaufman Kona cotton. When I went to launder the pieces I knew the pieces were less than six yards. I measured and each was only four yards. I called and fabrics.com gave me options. (1) I could return the four yards and get the 6-yard lengths; (2) I could return all for a full refund; (3) they could send an additional two yards of each. I chose the last option since I didn't need full six-yard lengths. The service person I spoke with said the cuts were done at the distributor, not in-store. They are concerned that there might be other packets with the incorrect yardage.

Annz 08-05-2010 04:42 PM

Sorry that happened but your advise is well taken.

Matilda 08-05-2010 04:46 PM

Joann fabrics does that all the time. I turned them into the Better Business Bureau. I got tired of it. I noticed they had gotten better.

LadyCougar 08-05-2010 06:07 PM

I'm sorry to hear it happened to you. However, I have found that fabric.com customer service is wonderful, and do everything in their power to keep their customers satisfied. Sometimes mistakes are made - remember they are only human. It's when you call a company and they don't want to acknowledge that a mistake was made, or even want to help you. So even with mistakes, if they treat me right, and want to make it right, I'll shop there again.

I feel exactly the same way. I'm a RN and accuracy is a must....why isn't it for everyone?

Bev 08-05-2010 06:22 PM

I spot check with my on-line purchases. You know what I found out the last time I checked?
I found that the place I had been ordering from gives me at least 3 or 4 inches more than what I ordered. I mean on every piece I order. Even if I order five different yardages of fabrics. I think that's pretty good of them. I checked with them and they said that it's their policy to overcut rather than undercut.

Where do you order from?

Gal 08-05-2010 06:34 PM

The shop I worked for asked us to give a thumb width over the measure, does not sound much, but surprisingly it gave room for a little give and take.

I have purchased fabric myself where it has been cut exactly on the line and when I have washed and dried it, the amount has come in short of what I needed, not that I penny pinch to that degree but having worked in the industry I notice these things and I think I have seen it all!!

Gal

annette1952 08-05-2010 06:45 PM

I measure my orders of fabric every time I get them from everyone. I have been shorted a few times. Every place has always made it good with me too. It doesn't happen very often but it does every now & then. Nobody is perfect I guess!! LOL
