One of the other board members and I are trying to connect as we are sew alone quilters. Is there anyone else that meets with others. How often? What do you do? (other than talk about quilting)? At each others house? Do you sew on projects? Any ideas would be appreciated.

amma 01-05-2011 02:12 PM

What is it that you want to do? Some may just want to meet for lunch and a trip to a LQS, others to sew... I don't think there are any rules to follow  :D:D:D

mltquilt 01-05-2011 02:16 PM

I meet with a group of friends almost every week. Sometimes some of are working on the same project other times doing our own thing. We get inspiration and ideas from each other. We meet at one friends house as she has a sewing studio converted from a garage. If there is a guild in your area that is a good place to find a bee (sewing group).

I have a group of ladies from Church that I get together with monthly, at the Church. They are my closest friends and we talk often and shop together and go to shows together. I even had 2 of my daughters marry sons of two of them!!!!

A group of us met in Shipshewana this past fall. It was a day trip we had Michigan,Ohio, Indiana and IL I think maybe another state. we shopped ate and show and tell. It was fun.

lisalovesquilting 01-05-2011 03:15 PM

I meet once a week with ladies at our church. We work on our own projects and make baby dedication quilts. Also meet on the 2nd Sat. of each month at the church and one gal teaches a new block each time. And on the 3rd Sat. of each month for open sew at another church in town, we do our own projects and once a year make a large quilt for a local organization to sell chances to make money for their club or charity.

mygirl66 01-05-2011 03:32 PM

How can you go wrong with a day of food, fabric & a new quilt buddy! Oh, dont forget the chocolate!

zennia 01-05-2011 03:35 PM

I meet once a week with as group of ladies. We all work on our own projects but are there to help each other and of course enjoy someones goodies.

luckylindy333 01-05-2011 03:36 PM

I used to meet with a group of quilters once a week. Then I went to work full time. Waaaahhhh! Now I sew alone, that is why I love this board so much. I am on the lookout for a group that would fit my hours. I love meeting up with other quilters to sew and talk about everything. It used to keep me on track with my projects to meet with the group every week- really miss them!!!
I also have gone on many retreats at which we sewed on our own projects and had all the meals provided. Heaven!!!!!

featherweight 01-05-2011 03:39 PM

Nativetexan and I go to several quilt meeting together. We actually meet at them. We have gone to a quilt show and I have introduced her to many of my quilting friends. We see each other at lest a couple of times a month. I hve really enjoyed her!!!

amandasgramma 01-05-2011 03:57 PM

Yes, I am!!! First, it was one other, then another joined us, and now next week there'll be 6 of us!!! ALL from this board!!! We really haven't set a schedule of what to do. Last time I showed them how to make Origami Christmas ornies with fabric. Next week, we're going to be shown how to make the folded Christmas balls. And the next meeting after that we're going to learn how to make folded star potholders. We're going to meet, talk, eat a lunch, and then craft. We may, as we go along, start taking our sewing machines. But who knows!!! It's fun! Oh, we're also extending hours. I'm sure, during a shop hop event, we'll be doing that together.

mic-pa 01-05-2011 04:10 PM

A few years ago I annonunced in church that we would be starting a group for quilters to meet and share ideas etc. There is 10 of us that meet at the church twice a month on Thurdays. In fact tomorrow we meet. Yeah!!!! We bring our machines and spend most of the day. Somethimes we do projects together and sometimes we work only on our own stuff. All in all it is fun.

LivelyLady 01-05-2011 04:28 PM

There are five of us that like to do hand work too, so we set up an evening social time once a month to visit, do hand work, and exchange ideas, and of course show and tell. In between we might hook up with another one or two or three and go out for lunch and hit the LQSs

charmpacksplus 01-05-2011 04:43 PM

I joined the local quilters' guild to meet other quilters and found out they have about 12 quilting bees amoungst them. Some meet every week, some meet once a month. Some work on a project as a group, some work on individual projects but can help each other out if needed. The guild meeting is more business and guest speakers, the bees are for sewing.

craftybear 01-05-2011 05:27 PM

Yes, please plan some get togethers with other quilters.

I have set up some meet and greets in Shipshewana, Indiana and we all met at a quilt shop, shop, shop, shop. If you call the quilt shops ahead of time some of them will have cool goody bags for the ones attending. Also I had called a restaurant ahead of time and we got the private room, no extra charge so we could eat, have show and tell and visitied for 2- 3 hours or so. Was a fun day.

You can set up events and post them on the offline section of the board to find other quilters that would love to attend. Have fun!

I used to get together with a friend and my mother in law once a week to quilt. My MIL and I were working on a quilt for my daughter, but if I had something else I needed to work on, I'd bring that. Our friend would work on whatever she had going.

We had a little tea and some snacks, and visited more than we sewed, some days, but I think it helped SO MUCH to have the extra input on things sometimes, and I would get something done on a day that I might not have felt like quilting on, otherwise.

klgreene 01-05-2011 07:18 PM

Up until yesterday, I thought I was the only person in my town that was on this board. Then I found out that there are two others girls on here, snownannie and stipplingqueen. They belong to a quilt club here in town, and it meets this Monday, so I will be going to meet them. I'm so excited. And QuiltswithConvicts lives about two hours from me and we plan on meeting sometime soon. It's really nice having something in common when you meet someone new.

sewwhat85 01-05-2011 09:12 PM

sounds like fun hope to find quilting buddies near to me also

CarrieAnne 01-05-2011 09:31 PM

I have a friend from work who comes over for coffee a few times a month and we sew, and another lady at work wants me to join her quilting group. I guess just a bunch of her friends meet at another ladies house. Not sure of that because I dont even know the girl at work too well, kind of feel funny !
Would love to meet someone here!

pjwhalen145 01-06-2011 02:56 AM

Guilds are a good way to connect and learn from each other. I belong to a guild of about 35 women, from novice to blue ribbon winners and a quilting teacher. We meet once a month. Do a google search in your area for guilds. There is one that meets in your area. The Quilters Limited meets at the Seniors Center Annex in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. ...

One of the board members that lives not too far from me, and I are going to meet in a few weeks. Shop a little at our favorite LQS, lunch, who knows what else. Just fun to meet someone new with a hobby in common. Then we'll see where it goes.

Some quilter friends of mine got together going on11 years ago. We started with 4. At first we took turns meeting in each others homes. Later as we gained members we needed a larger place to meet. We now meet in a quilting house built by a members family. Yes her children helped a lot. We present new patterns, give advice how to handle a problem, eat a sack lunch, or bring special things to share. We pray for whoever needs it. We teach new people to quilt. Also we discuss new methods. It is a great circle of friends. We all speak oflooking for a pattern. Some have computers and search. Others share our quilt books. Our main thing is making quilts for fire families. We also hand quilt for each of the members, taking turns. Very educational.. Marvel

Our little group meets the firt Sat. of every month. We get a room at our library, (free)We bring our sewing machines if we want or hand work. We have a pitch in or order pizza, and we sew all day. We have been doing this for 2 years. We call ourselves The First Sat. Quilters.

GirlieWhirlie 01-06-2011 05:04 AM

I meet with other quilters every Friday at my LQS. My local library also has a group called Quilters and Readers. We meet once a month with show and tell, demonstrations of all kinds, and much more. We usually make two quilts (individually) a year, all of us using the same pattern. The library room is booked for 4 Saturdays a year just to sew. This year we are doing a star block of the month using different techniques and patterns for each center piece.

dirty1mom 01-06-2011 05:33 AM

I started a club called the Knit-Cro-Sew Club. We will be 2 years old this Saturday. Yeah, there's a party planned. We meet every Saturday and sew/quilt, knit and crochet, and do whatever anyone wants to work on. We eat pizza, laugh a lot and work on whatever we bring to work on. We share skills and will teach anybody that is interested in learning.

mcbride4362 01-06-2011 05:52 AM

If you plan another one of these would you please put me on the list? I am in Traverse City, MI. I also would like to find other quilters in my area/state that I could plan to meet with....anyone out there???

LindaMRB 01-06-2011 06:01 AM

In Atlanta, some groups meet monthly but I rarely go. It always interferes with where my kids need to be.
They show off quilts at all stages and since some of them have known each other a long time, they have personal discussions as well. One woman admitted once she just liked to hear everyone ooh and ahh!
Some of the work I've seen is impressive -- and intimidating. I'm relatively new to this, don't have much time to quilt and often do not have things to share. And I have no intention of doing machine quilting to sell or whatever.

They also go on a retreat twice a year. They have Saturday (and mid-week) stitch-ins where they gather at a shop and sit and quilt, for a space fee, share ideas, show work in progress and get advice.

One thing I really liked was each woman, after a certain time in the group, gets picked and everyone makes a square for them, based on what they would like. Hence the crazy quilt square I made for one of the women (shown with my info at left). I made a couple others that I do not have photos of, but I enjoyed that small task a lot.

Also, some groups meet with other groups occasionally and have challenges they try to accomplish before the next joint meeting.

I watched a video yesterday on quilting, recommended by someone on this list, and learned A LOT, which is what I was hoping for: More sharing of knowledge and ideas and differences of opinion and tastes.

Thanks!

drdolly 01-06-2011 06:02 AM

there are 5 of us girls from our quilt guild that meet and have supper out, and sometimes we meet and just sew, or we even give each other projects to work on.

Wine Woman 01-06-2011 06:09 AM

LindaZ search on the 'User List' by area and you will see how many are in your area. We did this post for OR/WA quilters together from the Board. We meet every other month and have had one beach weekend away! There are so many great people here on the board-start a post about getting together and see what response you get! Our Oregon group is getting together in Jan at the Quilt Show. You never have to be alone there are so many quilters!

Kat Sews 01-06-2011 06:28 AM

We have a group that meets every thursday morning at 9:00am. We get together and hand quilt and talk about our latest projects. share info and ideas with each other, try to help solve current quilting problems. Sometimes we have a nice potluck lunch or snacks. If anyone wants to join us and is in the Cagle mountain area you would be welcome. pm me for info.

foxxigrani 01-06-2011 06:55 AM

I wish I could find or start a group. I have tried a couple of times but they all fall by the way side. Its so much fun if you can find others that have same interests, I love to try and sew, as stated in earlier post I do not know how. So a group would be great for me. But no one wants to do it once a week or even a once a month.

Yarn or Fabric 01-06-2011 07:05 AM

I used to meet once a week with a friend of mine... then she started to home school.... :(

I do have a sewing group that meets about once a month on a Saturday and we generally sew the entire day. It's really nice :)

grammyk50 01-06-2011 07:12 AM

I am part of a group that meets monthly-we all met at our LQS. We meet at my home since there is ample room for 7 ladies, and their machines, cutting boards, etc. Last year we swapped batik squares monthly, and used a common pattern. It will be fun to see how different the finished projects will be. Oh, and dessert is always provided by one of our members-nothing like a little sugar to keep the creative juices flowing!

I also started a quilt group at our local library, where I volunteer. We loosely refer to it as a "quilt" group, but you're likely to see any kind of handcrafts being done. No machines are used here, since the facility is very small-only 2 rooms. Everyone enjoys it so much, that we're now going to meet two times a month this year.

If you know even one quilter, start a group. It will grow!! Have fun.

Deborah12687 01-06-2011 07:12 AM

I don't have any friends to meet with anymore since I moved as most of my quilting friends moved to. I tried to do the sewing with my Grandaughter and there friends and my Sister in law spoiled it all. Just going to keep to my self and stay busy.

Betty Lee 01-06-2011 07:43 AM

We have a Church Quilters Group that meets twice a month. We do group quilting, also can work on your own quilt project. Betty Lee

grandme26 01-06-2011 07:55 AM

I sew with a friend some of the time and we work on projects that we are doing for the Quilting Guild or the LQS that we are in. We get more done working on our projects together than alone. Wish we could get together more often.

marciacp 01-06-2011 08:49 AM

Hi Linda,
I had the privilege of meeting 3 other board members
in New York City, of all places (I live in TX), in early Dec.
We had a great day of going to quilt shops, talking,
having lunch, and just making new quilting friends. I
know that is not what you are really talking about, but
I would encourage you to get together with the new
friend you have made on this board and see what the
two of you would enjoy doing together.

I started a group at my church back in 2000 and we had
anywhere from 5 - 10 each week. We got together every
Thursday night to make quilts. We each worked on our own
projects, but we also made some quilts as donation quilts
for various things. In 2001 we made 20 patriotic quilts
from my "America Still Shines" pattern and then in Sept
of 2002, 4 of us took them to New York to give to some
of the police stations, fire stations, port authority station
that lost the most workers on 9/11, and some of the widows
of some of the rescue workers. It was very rewarding.

We had so much fun meeting each week and sewing together. Sometimes we would have an overnight mini-
retreat where we would come on Friday, and leave Saturday.
We sewed into the wee hours of the night, and some slept
a few hours and then got up and sewed some more. We
also took day trips to quilt shops, and sometimes we took
an excursion out of town to do our own mini-shop hop.

Those were some of the most rewarding and fun years of
my life. Sadly it all came to an end and I am now in a position of having to sew alone, which I don't like. If you
can find a buddy where your personalities mesh and you
want to get together, I say go for it. You won't be disappointed.
Have a Great Day!
Marcia

I am going to my quilt group today. We have just celebrated our 25th year. We meet in each others homes. We also have two retreats One in Central Oregon at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt show, and the other at the beach over Columbus day weekend. Been doing that for 17 years. We work on our own items but on special occasions we do make items for our members to commemorate something special, weddings, births, cancer, deaths. We are an extremely close group. I wouldn't miss a quilt day other than traveling or illness. Jan
