Mistake at JF...feeling a little guilty

I took my mom to Joann Fabrics today. Seniors would get 20% off the purchase today only, so she said she'd come along so I could get the additional discount. Nice!

We picked up a few things, including an Accuquilt Die, which can normally never be used with a 40% off coupon.

I handed the postcard with all the coupons to the checkout gal, and when I got home and looked at the receipt, she gave me 40% off the die along with the 20% off the total.

I am feeling a little guilty.

Should I return it and pay the correct amount?
Catholic Guilt is a killer!
LOL

cashs_mom 08-09-2017 01:17 PM

I wouldn't. If it wasn't allowed, the cash register should have caught it.

But then I'm not Catholic so I don't have the Catholic guilt :D

bearisgray 08-09-2017 01:21 PM

Check your ad again and see what it says.

You know what you can - and cannot- live with.

I lucked out once when I bought some muslin - the muslin was on sale AND I had a % of total purchase that day!

SusieQOH 08-09-2017 01:45 PM

I know all about Catholic guilt!!!! They get us young and it stays :D
It sounds to be like what you got was the sale price.
You have my permission not to feel guilty LOL

meyert 08-09-2017 01:51 PM

I know Catholic guilt... this doesn't apply. I agree with cashs_mom this day and age the cash register would have caught it.

bkay 08-09-2017 01:51 PM

I don't know about your JoAnn's, but at mine, they do what the register allows. You ask them if you can use this coupon or the other, and they say, "Let's see what the register says". They don't make those decisions, the register does.

Tartan 08-09-2017 03:22 PM

I calculate how much money I would have to spend in gas for a round trip.

Onebyone 08-09-2017 03:31 PM

Nothing to feel guilty about. JoAnns watches every penny so you didn't get away with anything.

geevee 08-09-2017 03:41 PM

If the 40% off coupon scanned then it was allowed, so don't feel bad.

A month or two ago I went to Joann's to get some FQs on sale and got a piece of yardage as well, I had some other stops to make afterwards and it didn't really ding until later that the amount that rung up was too low, so I checked the receipt and the yardage wasn't rung up, so I went back, she found the yellow slip and it took some playing with the register to ring that up. I went back a few days later for some home dec. fabric and the same thing happened, the yardage slip bar codes weren't scanning (and the girl at the register hadn't realized it till I pointed it out).

I imagine they have that fixed by now but I wonder how much un-rung up yardage went out the door because neither register operator nor customer realized those slips weren't scanning.

Chester the bunny 08-09-2017 03:54 PM

I would have gone back if I didn't see this
https://www.joann.com/seniordiscountday/
Says the discount applies to regular, sale and clearance items.
I know Catholic guilt, some of us have even perfected it, it's more my mother's words that stick with me.

JustAbitCrazy 08-09-2017 05:30 PM

If it were me, I'd take the slip back and ask. But that's just me. Once a clerk (not at JoAnnes's) was giving me back in change more than I gave her in cash to pay for my one item. She hit a wrong number and was mindlessly giving me back the change the cash register told her. After she counted out all that money into my hand, I looked at her bug-eyed and asked, "Do you realize that's almost twice as much as I gave you to pay for this?" She looked completely confused, took her a minute to process it, then had no idea what change I should get, even though I told her how much it should be. She had to void it all out and ring it up right so the cash register could confirm what I already told her.

Jingle 08-09-2017 05:43 PM

No way would I go back. Hitting a wrong amount is one thing, this wasn't the case for you.

Do not feel guilty, you are okay.

Anniedeb 08-09-2017 05:51 PM

Yup....Catholic gal here too! I would not go back though. I know that the Joann stores that I go to program their coupons into the register. Cashier scans, and says yes/no depending on how the register is programmed. So, enjoy your purchase guilt free!

redstilettos 08-09-2017 05:59 PM

thanks everyone. I really do appreciate your words of wisdom.

I am going to take this die and use it well.....and not think about it in a negative way. I guess like many of you said, if the register took it....it was acceptable. Without having it in my hands yet, I can't check, so I am going to go with the thought it was meant to be :)

Susie I had to laugh at your statement of "they get us young and it sticks". Chester, I'm with you, too. My mom's words are Still in my head....and I'm 50!

nwm50 08-10-2017 02:35 AM

Hmmm that's interesting.. the computer usually automically knows what not to give you discount on....maybe it was the Senior day discount? Not Cashier fault so I wouldn't really worry about it much, probably was just your day to have!

bearisgray 08-10-2017 04:42 AM

Occasionally things do not get properly programmed into the registers - and JoAnn's is notorious for having "exclusions" on their coupons.

Onebyone 08-10-2017 04:43 AM

I've been over charged and undercharged at stores before but never went back if I didn't realize it at the store. Stuff like this balances out for me. I don't feel bad if I'm overcharged or undercharged.

Every once in a while at JA's a cashier will over ride the machine and give me multiple discounts as in the case of redstellitos case. I let it go, knowing that the register had to regulates the prices and if the cashier gave me an extra discount, it must be OK. I have no Catholic quilt but I have plenty of other guilt to keep me honest and appreciative of a blessing no matter the source. :o

LGJARN52 08-10-2017 04:48 AM

I was raised Catholic so I know about the quilt. No longer attend church, but still pray and talk to the man above on a regular basis. Still I think in your situation, the cash register or a knowledgeable cashier would have caught an error like that.

red-warrior 08-10-2017 05:15 AM

One JF gives me that discount every time I go and another one does not. I always thought it was due to the stores policy......now I am wondering if I am guilty?

If it was a problem for that store then it would be corrected fast. Don't fret over it.

Snooze2978 08-10-2017 05:33 AM

You might want to go back and check with them to see if maybe it was a mistake on their end. I understand wanting to be honest and I commend you on it. You don't see that much these days it seems.

janjanq 08-10-2017 06:00 AM

I don't have Catholic guilt but I do have Baptist guilt! I think it's pretty much the same thing. However I think Joann's cash register are programmed to comply with the terms of the coupons.

Faintly Artistic 08-10-2017 06:04 AM

You could at least call first before you make the trip. Honesty is always the best policy, no matter what your religion! Mistakes like this are one reason why prices go up for everyone. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't try to fix it.

mandyrose 08-10-2017 06:29 AM

that happen to me with wonder under jaf was having a 50% off all interfacing i grab the whole bolt of wonder under about 10 yrds at that time it was $1.79 yrd had a whole bunch of other items the clerk did her job took my coupons, and it wasn't untill i got home looked at the reciept that the wonder under came out to 89 cents for the bolt the clerk scanned it but the register read it as 1 yrd instead of 10 yrds, didn't lose any sleep over that ..........

sewbizgirl 08-10-2017 06:41 AM

Life is too short to worry about a few dollars. They have overcharged me before and I let it go... not worth the trip back to the store.

So what die did you get?

redstilettos 08-10-2017 06:54 AM

Thanks ladies. I was feeling a little better last night when I went to bed and then it woke me up. Can't help it. So I called JF this morning and spoke with an asst. mgr. She was very blase' about it and said, well....I wouldn't worry about it.

So if the Asst. Mgr didn't care, now I don't either, and am pleased as punch. Whew. LOL

Sewbiz, I got the 5" square die, so I can cut my squares for the swaps on this board faster (and not worry about that dang ruler slipping on me at the very end of the cut!). It cuts 2 at a time. So if I fold the material, I can get a pile all at once. Weeeee! Guess what I'm doing this weekend!

klswift 08-10-2017 07:45 AM

Sometimes it is included in the sales. The SKU numbers would have been excluded in the system if it wasn't eligible for the sale (this is the same way that it knows how to apply a coupon to the highest priced eligible item without you having to separate out the items). So, be happy you took your mom and got a special deal!!

QuickStitch 08-10-2017 08:12 AM

The 40% off coupon and the 20% off total is correct. I have done that often, always a bonus.

MadQuilter 08-10-2017 08:35 AM

Excluding items off the discounts is not the consumer's job. Enjoy your sale.

sewvicki 08-10-2017 11:10 AM

Patrice S is correct....if it wasn't part of the coupon deal then the computer wouldn't have honored it. Don't feel guilty.
You did nothing wrong.

sewvicki 08-10-2017 11:11 AM

Darn. I am sewvicki and just sent the last response. Wish I had signed it Sr. Mary Victoria!!!!

llong0233 08-10-2017 12:07 PM

I have catholic guilt from years of school and nuns.
the machine would have rejected it. have fun with it.

redstilettos 08-10-2017 06:49 PM

Sr Mary Victoria I now feel fully absolved :)

nightquilter 08-10-2017 07:13 PM

I think you have already got your answer. Guilt is a hard thing to handle. Most times if the store makes a mistake and you go back they thank you for being honest and you keep the item for what you paid. So you do the right thing they thank you and you can use that die guilt free.

marietta 08-10-2017 10:29 PM

I too have lived thru the GCS for 50+ years, Always do the right thing.
But it's that witch Karma, that makes me shudder so I, Always make it right (or at least try)
I would have done what you did Red called and tried. You did.
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!

maviskw 08-11-2017 04:33 AM

I have oodles of non-Catholic friends who would definitely try to figure this out. Catholics aren't the only honest people and some of us Catholics can be dis-honest, too.
Glad you found your solution. I know the feeling of not sleeping at night because of something like that.
Happy Quilting.

Ditto! Perfectly stated. Besides, even if this was a mistake, I'm sure you have been on the receiving end of mistakes that cost you. I figure, leave it to the universe to sort out.
